Dynamical Cobordisms in General Relativity and String Theory
We describe a class of time-dependent solutions in string- or M-theory that
are exact with respect to alpha-prime and curvature corrections and interpolate
in physical space between regions in which the low energy physics is
well-approximated by different string theories and string compactifications.
The regions are connected by expanding "domain walls" but are not separated by
causal horizons, and physical excitations can propagate between them. As
specific examples we construct solutions that interpolate between oriented and
unoriented string theories, and also between type II and heterotic theories.
Our solutions can be weakly curved and under perturbative control everywhere

Local Structure and Dynamics in MPt(CN) 6 Prussian Blue Analogues
We use a combination of X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) measurements, lattice dynamical calculations, and ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the local structure and dynamics in various MPtÂ(CN)6 Prussian blue analogues. In order to link directly the local distortions captured by the PDF with the lattice dynamics of this family, we develop and apply a new âinteraction-spaceâ PDF refinement approach. This approach yields effective harmonic force constants, from which the (experiment-derived) low-energy phonon dispersion relations can be approximated. Calculation of the corresponding GruÌneisen parameters allows us to identify the key modes responsible for negative thermal expansion (NTE) as arising from correlated tilts of coordination octahedra. We compare our results against the phonon dispersion relations determined using DFT calculations, which identify the same NTE mechanism
Taxing the Informal Economy: The Current State of Knowledge and Agendas for Future Research
This paper reviews the literature on taxation of the informal economy, taking stock of key debates
and drawing attention to recent innovations. Conventionally, the debate on whether to tax has frequently focused
on the limited revenue potential, high cost of collection, and potentially adverse impact on small firms. Recent
arguments have increasingly emphasised the more indirect benefits of informal taxation in relation to economic
growth, broader tax compliance, and governance. More research is needed, we argue, into the relevant costs and
benefits for all, including quasi-voluntary compliance, political and administrative incentives for reform, and
citizen-state bargaining over taxation
Reverse Monte Carlo modeling of amorphous silicon
An implementation of the Reverse Monte Carlo algorithm is presented for the
study of amorphous tetrahedral semiconductors. By taking into account a number
of constraints that describe the tetrahedral bonding geometry along with the
radial distribution function, we construct a model of amorphous silicon using
the reverse monte carlo technique. Starting from a completely random
configuration, we generate a model of amorphous silicon containing 500 atoms
closely reproducing the experimental static structure factor and bond angle
distribution and in improved agreement with electronic properties. Comparison
is made to existing Reverse Monte Carlo models, and the importance of suitable
constraints beside experimental data is stressed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 PostScript figure
Inference of hidden structures in complex physical systems by multi-scale clustering
We survey the application of a relatively new branch of statistical
physics--"community detection"-- to data mining. In particular, we focus on the
diagnosis of materials and automated image segmentation. Community detection
describes the quest of partitioning a complex system involving many elements
into optimally decoupled subsets or communities of such elements. We review a
multiresolution variant which is used to ascertain structures at different
spatial and temporal scales. Significant patterns are obtained by examining the
correlations between different independent solvers. Similar to other
combinatorial optimization problems in the NP complexity class, community
detection exhibits several phases. Typically, illuminating orders are revealed

Integration of decision support systems to improve decision support performance
Decision support system (DSS) is a well-established research and development area. Traditional isolated, stand-alone DSS has been recently facing new challenges. In order to improve the performance of DSS to meet the challenges, research has been actively carried out to develop integrated decision support systems (IDSS). This paper reviews the current research efforts with regard to the development of IDSS. The focus of the paper is on the integration aspect for IDSS through multiple perspectives, and the technologies that support this integration. More than 100 papers and software systems are discussed. Current research efforts and the development status of IDSS are explained, compared and classified. In addition, future trends and challenges in integration are outlined. The paper concludes that by addressing integration, better support will be provided to decision makers, with the expectation of both better decisions and improved decision making processes
A systematic review and meta-synthesis of the impact of low back pain on people's lives

reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly credited.Background - Low back pain (LBP) is a common and costly problem that many interpret within a biopsychosocial model. There is renewed concern that core-sets of outcome measures do not capture what is important. To inform debate about the coverage of back pain outcome measure core-sets, and to suggest areas worthy of exploration within healthcare consultations, we have synthesised the qualitative literature on the impact of low back pain on peopleâs lives.
Methods - Two reviewers searched CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PEDro, and Medline, identifying qualitative studies of peopleâs experiences of non-specific LBP. Abstracted data were thematic coded and synthesised using a meta-ethnographic, and a meta-narrative approach.
Results - We included 49 papers describing 42 studies. Patients are concerned with engagement in meaningful activities; but they also want to be believed and have their experiences and identity, as someone âdoing battleâ with pain, validated. Patients seek diagnosis, treatment, and cure, but also reassurance of the absence of pathology. Some struggle to meet social expectations and obligations. When these are achieved, the credibility of their pain/disability claims can be jeopardised. Others withdraw, fearful of disapproval, or unable or unwilling to accommodate social demands. Patients generally seek to regain their pre-pain levels of health, and physical and emotional stability. After time, this can be perceived to become unrealistic and some adjust their expectations accordingly.
Conclusions - The social component of the biopsychosocial model is not well represented in current core-sets of outcome measures. Clinicians should appreciate that the broader impact of low back pain includes social factors; this may be crucial to improving patientsâ experiences of health care. Researchers should consider social factors to help develop a portfolio of more relevant outcome measures.Arthritis Research U
The LAGUNA design study- towards giant liquid based underground detectors for neutrino physics and astrophysics and proton decay searches
The feasibility of a next generation neutrino observatory in Europe is being
considered within the LAGUNA design study. To accommodate giant neutrino
detectors and shield them from cosmic rays, a new very large underground
infrastructure is required. Seven potential candidate sites in different parts
of Europe and at several distances from CERN are being studied: Boulby (UK),
Canfranc (Spain), Fr\'ejus (France/Italy), Pyh\"asalmi (Finland),
Polkowice-Sieroszowice (Poland), Slanic (Romania) and Umbria (Italy). The
design study aims at the comprehensive and coordinated technical assessment of
each site, at a coherent cost estimation, and at a prioritization of the sites

In situ studies of materials for high temperature CO2 capture and storage.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) offers a possible solution to curb the CO2 emissions from stationary sources in the coming decades, considering the delays in shifting energy generation to carbon neutral sources such as wind, solar and biomass. The most mature technology for post-combustion capture uses a liquid sorbent, amine scrubbing. However, with the existing technology, a large amount of heat is required for the regeneration of the liquid sorbent, which introduces a substantial energy penalty. The use of alternative sorbents for CO2 capture, such as the CaO-CaCO3 system, has been investigated extensively in recent years. However there are significant problems associated with the use of CaO based sorbents, the most challenging one being the deactivation of the sorbent material. When sorbents such as natural limestone are used, the capture capacity of the solid sorbent can fall by as much as 90 mol% after the first 20 carbonation-regeneration cycles. In this study a variety of techniques were employed to understand better the cause of this deterioration from both a structural and morphological standpoint. X-ray and neutron PDF studies were employed to understand better the local surface and interfacial structures formed upon reaction, finding that after carbonation the surface roughness is decreased for CaO. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies showed that carbonation with added steam leads to a faster and more complete conversion of CaO than under conditions without steam, as evidenced by the phases seen at different depths within the sample. Finally, in situ X-ray tomography experiments were employed to track the morphological changes in the sorbents during carbonation, observing directly the reduction in porosity and increase in tortuosity of the pore network over multiple calcination reactions.M.T.
