Putting Ethnography on the Witness Stand: Review of Interrogating Ethnography: Why Evidence Matters

Lawyer, historian and author Steven Lubet’s Interrogating Ethnography: Why Evidence Matters puts several well-known urban ethnographies on the figurative witness stand and finds that some don’t hold up to legal (and journalistic) scrutiny. The author encourages social science researchers to employ fact-checking techniques to increase the veracity of their work. While Lubet praises social science researchers for their altruistic missions and painstaking data collection in the field he finds follow-up research often lacking. He recognizes that ethnographers do not want to be the adversaries of marginalized subjects but believes that more rigorous vetting of data is crucial to the survival of ethnography as a respected research method. His book provides a blueprint to achieve what he says is needed credibility

Parents’ Incomes and Children’s Outcomes: A Quasi-Experiment

Identifying the effect of parental incomes on child outcomes is difficult due to the correlation of unobserved ability, education levels and income. Previous research has relied on the use of instrumental variables to identify the effect of a change in household income on the young adult outcomes of the household’s children. In this research, we examine the role that an exogenous increase in household incomes due to a government transfer unrelated to household characteristics plays in the long run outcomes for children in affected households. We find that children who are in households affected by the cash transfer program have higher levels of education in their young adulthood and a lower incidence of criminality for minor offenses. These effects differ by initial household poverty status as is expected. Second, we explore two possible mechanisms through which this exogenous increase in household income affects the long run outcomes of children – parental time (quantity) and parental quality. Virginia\u27s \u27Affiliated Transactions\u27 Statute: Indulging Form over Substance in Second Generation Takeover Legislation

Virginia\u27s recently enacted antitakeover statute, the Affiliated Transactions provision of the Virginia Stock Corporation Act, raises serious constitutional and economic questions. Although the form of the statute appears to regulate the internal affairs of Virginia corporations, the substance and practical impact of the statute render it violative of both the commerce and supremacy clauses. Constitutional analysis of state antitakeover legislation necessitates consideration of the economic desirability of an unrestricted market for corporate control. The United States Supreme Court\u27s most recent statement on the subject, in CTS Corp. v. Dynamics Corp. of America, decided on April 21, 1987, reflects a noteworthy retreat from the Court\u27s position in Edgarv. MITE. The debate concerning the role of economic analysis in the constitutional scrutiny of state antitakeover legislation, as well as the question whether such legislation is truly consistent with shareholder interests, appears to be far from settled

Characterization of Respiratory Phenotype in Very Long-chain Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficient Mice.

Rationale: Very Long-chain Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD) deficiency the most common inherited long-chain fatty acid disorder. The VLCAD enzyme catalyzes the first step of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and loss of the enzyme results in energy deficiency as well as accumulation of long chain fatty acids. Recently, a related enzyme, Long-chain Acyl-CoA dehydrogensase (LCAD), which unlike VLCAD is not highly expressed in metabolic tissues like liver, heart and skeletal muscle, was found to be expressed in the lung and surfactant and lung dysfunction were observed in LCAD deficient mice. Respiratory distress syndrome has been described in other fatty acid oxidation disorders. VLCAD is expressed in lung, and likely plays an important role in lung compliance. Methods: VLCAD deficient mice and litter-mate controls were fasted for 18 hours, then exercised on a treadmill for 2 hours. Breathing was immediately assessed using whole body plethysmography in unanaesthetized spontaneously breathing mice. After a stable baseline was achieved, mice were given a “respiratory” challenge with 7% hypercapnia. In a subgroup of animals, pulmonary mechanics were assessed using Flexivent (Scireq). Results: Following exercise, VLCAD deficient mice had a decreased tidal volume and minute ventilation compared to their wild type controls. However, post-exercise VLCAD deficient mice were able to stabilize to similar levels as wild-type during baseline. The VLCAD deficient mice had a decreased response to a respiratory challenge with 7% hypercapnia. Early preliminary results suggest that VLCAD deficient animals have lower airway resistance. Conclusions: Respiratory insufficiency was demonstrated in a fasted and exercise challenged VLCAD deficient mice

Introduction: Gene therapy has changed dramatically in the 28 years since the first human gene transfer experiment in 1989. Alipogene tiparvovec, GlyberaR®, a recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) product for lipoprotein lipase deficiency, and Strimvelis®, a lentivirus vector for severe combined immune deficiency are approved in Europe. An rAAV2 product for a congenital form of blindness is currently under review in the United States, likely to be followed by numerous other gene therapies

Kinks Dynamics in One-Dimensional Coupled Map Lattices

We examine the problem of the dynamics of interfaces in a one-dimensional space-time discrete dynamical system. Two different regimes are studied : the non-propagating and the propagating one. In the first case, after proving the existence of such solutions, we show how they can be described using Taylor expansions. The second situation deals with the assumption of a travelling wave to follow the kink propagation. Then a comparison with the corresponding continuous model is proposed.
