The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effect of whole body vibration training on agility, speed and power in male volleyball players. Ten college volleyball players volunteered to participate in this study. The vibration training (VT) consisted of 60% with 28 Hz frequencies and 1Omm amplitudes. Counter movement jump (CMJ), blocking agility test (BAT), agility test (AT) and 10 meters sprinting (1 OMS) were performed at pre-test and post-test (60s rest). The peak force (PF). mean force (MF), maximum rate of force development (mRFD) and relative net impulse (RNI) from the CMJs were computed. A repeated measures ANOVA was applied to obtain the variables. The present study indicated that the WBV significantly improves the MF, mRFD and BAT parameters of CMJ and BAT performances excluding the PF. Speed and agility does not seem to be enhanced by VT

Risk of aquaculture-derived microplastics in aquaculture areas: An overlooked issue or a non-issue?

    Get PDF
Plastic equipment such as fishing nets and foam buoys has been widely used in aquaculture. This kind of equipment would gradually decompose while being subject to the long-term effects of physical, chemical, and biological degradation processes, leading to the release of large amounts of microplastics (MPs) into the local marine environment and the generation of aquaculture-derived MPs (AD-MPs). The rapid growth of aquaculture has resulted in an explosion of AD-MPs with various environmental consequences. The accumulation of MPs in aquatic products was found closely related to the abundance of environmental MPs, suggesting the importance of determining whether AD-MPs increase the risk of MP ingestion by aquatic products and thus endanger aquatic food safety. In this short communication, the ecological and health risks of AD-MPs were discussed and perspectives were proposed for future studies

Prognostic values of distinct CBX family members in breast cancer

Chromobox (CBX) family proteins are canonical components in polycomb repressive complexes 1 (PRC1), with epigenetic regulatory function and transcriptionally repressing target genes via chromatin modification. A plethora of studies have highlighted the function specifications among CBX family members in various cancer, including lung cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer. Nevertheless, the functions and prognostic roles of distinct CBX family members in breast cancer (BC) remain elusive. In this study, we reported the prognostic values of CBX family members in patients with BC through analysis of a series of databases, including CCLE, ONCOMINE, Xena Public Data Hubs, and Kaplan-Meier plotter. It was found that the mRNA expression of CBX family members were noticeably higher in BC than normal counterparts. CBX2 was highly expressed in Basal-like and HER-2 subtypes, while CBX4 and CBX7 expressions were enriched in Luminal A and Luminal B subtypes of BC. Survival analysis revealed that CBX1, CBX2 and CBX3 mRNA high expression was correlated to worsen relapse-free survival (RFS) for all BC patients, while CBX4, CBX5, CBX6 and CBX7 high expression was correlated to better RFS in this setting. Noteworthily, CBX1 and CBX2 were associated with chemoresistance whereas CBX7 was associated with tamoxifen sensitivity, as well as chemosensitivity in breast tumors. Therefore, we propose that CBX1, CBX2 and CBX7 are potential targets for BC treatment. The results might be beneficial for better understanding the complexity and heterogeneity in the molecular underpinning of BC, and to develop tools to more accurately predict the prognosis of patients with BC

Photoacoustic tomography and molecular fluorescence imaging: dual modality imaging of small animal brains in vivo

    Get PDF
We present a dual modality imaging technique by combining photoacoustic tomography (PAT) and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging for the study of animal model tumors. PAT provides high-resolution structural images of tumor angiogenesis, and fluorescence imaging offers high sensitivity to molecular probes for tumor detection. Coregistration of the PAT and fluorescence images was performed on nude mice with M21 human melanoma cell lines with αvβ3 integrin expression. An integrin αvβ3-targeted peptide-ICG conjugated NIR fluorescent contrast agent was used as the molecular probe for tumor detection. PAT was employed to noninvasively image the brain structures and the angiogenesis associated with tumors in nude mice. Coregistration of the PAT and fluorescence images was used in this study to visualize tumor location, angiogenesis, and brain structure simultaneously

Integration of the metabolome and transcriptome reveals the metabolites and genes related to nutritional and medicinal value in Coriandrum sativum

Coriandrum sativum (Coriander) or Chinese parsley is a culinary herb with multiple medicinal effects, which is widely used in cooking and traditional medicine. It is enriched with essential oils and anti-oxidant compounds with unknown significance. To explore the untapped reservoir of Coriander, we studied the transcriptome and metabolic profiles from three developmental stages. Here, we identified 10 tyrosine metabolic pathway-related genes (TMPRGs), six porphyrins and chlorophyll metabolic pathway-related genes (PCMPRGs), and five Vitamin E metabolic pathway-related genes (VEMPRGs). These genes were associated with the early development of Coriander. Our analysis suggests that these pathways are involved in the production of critical phenolic metabolites. Furthermore, we constructed the interaction network between these pathway-related genes and transcription factors (TFs), which supported the regulatory pathways for phenolic metabolites. Interestingly, we identified several nutritional or medicinally relevant metabolites, including 59 phenols, two polyamines, 12 alkaloids, and one terpenoid. The higher concentrations of metabolites were from caffeic acid, agmatine, and its derivatives. We found higher levels of caffeic acid and agmatine at 30 days compared to 60 or 90 days. This study provides evidence to stimulate further investigation of the role of these metabolites in medicinal and nutritional research

Essential Role of σ Factor RpoF in Flagellar Biosynthesis and Flagella-Mediated Motility of Acidithiobacillus caldus

Acidithiobacillaceae, an important family of acidophilic and chemoautotrophic sulfur or iron oxidizers, participate in geobiochemical circulation of the elements and drive the release of heavy metals in mining associated habitats. Because of their environmental adaptability and energy metabolic systems, Acidithiobacillus spp. have become the dominant bacteria used in bioleaching for heavy metal recovery. Flagella-driven motility is associated with bacterial chemotaxis and bacterial responses to environmental stimuli. However, little is known about how the flagellum of Acidithiobacillus spp. is regulated and how the flagellum affects the growth of these chemoautotrophic bacteria. In this study, we analyzed the flagellar gene clusters in Acidithiobacillus strains and uncovered the close relationship between flagella and the sulfur-oxidizing systems (Sox system). The σ28 gene (rpoF) knockout and overexpression strains of Acidithiobacillus caldus were constructed. Scanning electron microscopy shows that A. caldus ΔrpoF cells lacked flagella, indicating the essential role of RpoF in regulating flagella synthesis in these chemoautotrophic bacteria. Motility analysis suggests that the deletion of rpoF resulted in the reduction of swarming capability, while this capability was enhanced in the rpoF overexpression strain. Both static cultivation and low concentration of energy substrates (elemental sulfur or tetrathionate) led to weak growth of A. caldus ΔrpoF cells. The deletion of rpoF promoted bacterial attachment to the surface of elemental sulfur in static cultivation. The absence of RpoF caused an obvious change in transcription profile, including genes in flagellar cluster and those involved in biofilm formation. These results provide an understanding on the regulation of flagellar hierarchy and the flagellar function in these sulfur or iron oxidizers
