Accelerating Optimal Elemental Configuration Search in Crystal using Ising Machine
This research demonstrates that Ising machines can effectively solve optimal
elemental configuration searches in crystals, with Au-Cu alloys serving as an
example. The energy function is derived using the cluster expansion method in
the form of a QUBO function, enabling efficient problem-solving via Ising
machines. We have successfully obtained reasonable solutions for crystal
structures consisting of over 10,000 atoms. Notably, we have also obtained
plausible solutions for optimization problems with constrained solutions, such
as situations where the composition ratio of atomic species is predetermined.
These findings suggest that Ising machines can be valuable tools for addressing
materials science challenges.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Three-dimensional imaging of thoracic diseases with multidetector row CT
The benefits of multi-detector row CT (MDCT) relative to single-detector row helical CT are considerable. Multi-detector row CT allows shorter acquisition times, greater coverage, and superior image resolution. These factors substantially increase the diagnostic accuracy of the examination. Three-dimensional (3D) volume data from MDCT provides various unique applications on thoracic diseases. These includes isotropic viewings, use of multi planar reformation (MPR), maximum and minimum intensity projections (MIP and min IP), and volume rendering performed from external and internal perspectives allowing the user to “fly around” and “fly through” the structures. Recent advances in 3D volume rendering put real-time, interactive virtual reality guidance of the procedures such as bronchoscopy and surgery into practice
Stress relaxation arrested the mainshock rupture of the 2016 Central Tottori earthquake
地震の破壊はなぜ止まるのか? --2016年鳥取県中部地震の断層サイズを決めたもの--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2021-08-12.After a large earthquake, many small earthquakes, called aftershocks, ensue. Additional large earthquakes typically do not occur, despite the fact that the large static stress near the edges of the fault is expected to trigger further large earthquakes at these locations. Here we analyse ~10, 000 highly accurate focal mechanism solutions of aftershocks of the 2016 Mw 6.2 Central Tottori earthquake in Japan. We determine the location of the horizontal edges of the mainshock fault relative to the aftershock hypocentres, with an accuracy of approximately 200 m. We find that aftershocks rarely occur near the horizontal edges and extensions of the fault. We propose that the mainshock rupture was arrested within areas characterised by substantial stress relaxation prior to the main earthquake. This stress relaxation along fault edges could explain why mainshocks are rarely followed by further large earthquakes
Isolated congenital megacystis without intestinal obstruction: A mild variant of chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome?
Megacystis is frequently involved with chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome; however, isolated megacystis without intestinal obstruction is extremely rare. We present the case of a female patient with isolated congenital megacystis without severe intestinal obstruction. In this case, barium enema did not reveal any significant findings; however, histologic evaluation of her rectum showed hypoganglionosis of the submucous and myenteric plexuses. These findings indicate that this case may be a mild variant of chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome. The presence of megacystis should alert the physician to the possibility of chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction syndrome. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
PoGOLite - A High Sensitivity Balloon-Borne Soft Gamma-ray Polarimeter
We describe a new balloon-borne instrument (PoGOLite) capable of detecting
10% polarisation from 200mCrab point-like sources between 25 and 80keV in one 6
hour flight. Polarisation measurements in the soft gamma-ray band are expected
to provide a powerful probe into high-energy emission mechanisms as well as the
distribution of magnetic fields, radiation fields and interstellar matter. At
present, only exploratory polarisation measurements have been carried out in
the soft gamma-ray band. Reduction of the large background produced by
cosmic-ray particles has been the biggest challenge. PoGOLite uses Compton
scattering and photo-absorption in an array of 217 well-type phoswich detector
cells made of plastic and BGO scintillators surrounded by a BGO anticoincidence
shield and a thick polyethylene neutron shield. The narrow FOV (1.25msr)
obtained with well-type phoswich detector technology and the use of thick
background shields enhance the detected S/N ratio. Event selections based on
recorded phototube waveforms and Compton kinematics reduce the background to
that expected for a 40-100mCrab source between 25 and 50keV. A 6 hour
observation on the Crab will differentiate between the Polar Cap/Slot Gap,
Outer Gap, and Caustic models with greater than 5 sigma; and also cleanly
identify the Compton reflection component in the Cygnus X-1 hard state. The
first flight is planned for 2010 and long-duration flights from Sweden to
Northern Canada are foreseen thereafter.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 2 table
Guideline on the use of new anticancer drugs for the treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma 2010 update
The "Guideline on the Use of New Anticancer Drugs for the Treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma" was prepared by the Study Group on New Liver Cancer Therapies established by the "Research Project on Emergency Measures to Overcome Hepatitis" under the auspices of the Health and Labour Sciences Research Grant. The Guideline brings together data collected by the Study Group on the use and incidence of adverse events in 264 patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated using sorafenib and in 535 patients with advanced HCC treated using miriplatin at 16 participating institutions up until 22 December 2010, as well as referring to the published studies, academic presentations, and reports from the private sector. The aim of this Guideline is to facilitate understanding and current thinking regarding the proper usage of new anticancer drugs towards actual use in therapy. In terms of the format, the Guideline presents "clinical questions" on issues pertaining to medical care, makes "recommendations" on diagnosis and treatment in response to each of these clinical questions, and provides a rationale for these recommendations in the form of "scientific statements". © 2012 The Japan Society of Hepatology

ATP receptors in pain sensation: Involvement of spinal microglia and P2X4 receptors
There is abundant evidence that extracellular ATP and other nucleotides have an important role in pain signaling at both the periphery and in the CNS. At first, it was thought that ATP was simply involved in acute pain, since ATP is released from damaged cells and excites directly primary sensory neurons by activating their receptors. However, neither blocking P2X/Y receptors pharmacologically nor suppressing the expression of P2X/Y receptors molecularly in sensory neurons or in the spinal cord had an effect on acute physiological pain. The focus of attention now is on the possibility that endogenous ATP and its receptor system might be activated in pathological pain states, particularly in neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain is often a consequence of nerve injury through surgery, bone compression, diabetes or infection. This type of pain can be so severe that even light touching can be intensely painful; unfortunately, this state is generally resistant to currently available treatments. An important advance in our understanding of the mechanisms involved in neuropathic pain has been made by a recent work demonstrating the crucial role of ATP receptors (i.e., P2X3 and P2X4 receptors). In this review, we summarize the role of ATP receptors, particularly the P2X4 receptor, in neuropathic pain. The expression of P2X4 receptors in the spinal cord is enhanced in spinal microglia after peripheral nerve injury, and blocking pharmacologically and suppressing molecularly P2X4 receptors produce a reduction of the neuropathic pain behaviour. Understanding the key roles of ATP receptors including P2X4 receptors may lead to new strategies for the management of neuropathic pain
