    The HIFI spectral survey of AFGL 2591 (CHESS). II. Summary of the survey

    This paper presents the richness of submillimeter spectral features in the high-mass star forming region AFGL 2591. As part of the CHESS (Chemical Herschel Survey of Star Forming Regions) Key Programme, AFGL 2591 was observed by the Herschel/HIFI instrument. The spectral survey covered a frequency range from 480 up to 1240 GHz as well as single lines from 1267 to 1901 GHz (i.e. CO, HCl, NH3, OH and [CII]). Rotational and population diagram methods were used to calculate column densities, excitation temperatures and the emission extents of the observed molecules associated with AFGL 2591. The analysis was supplemented with several lines from ground-based JCMT spectra. From the HIFI spectral survey analysis a total of 32 species were identified (including isotopologues). In spite of the fact that lines are mostly quite week, 268 emission and 16 absorption lines were found (excluding blends). Molecular column densities range from 6e11 to 1e19 cm-2 and excitation temperatures range from 19 to 175 K. One can distinguish cold (e.g. HCN, H2S, NH3 with temperatures below 70 K) and warm species (e.g. CH3OH, SO2) in the protostellar envelope.Comment: Accepted to A&

    Predictors of the voltage derived left atrial fibrosis in patients with long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation

    Background: Left atrial (LA) arrhythmogenic substrate beyond the pulmonary veins (PV) seems to play a crucial role in the maintenance of atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of selected parameters with the presence and extent of voltage-defined LA fibrosis in patients with long-standing persistent AF (LSPAF) undergoing catheter ablation. Methods: One hundred and sixteen consecutive patients underwent high density-high resolution voltage mapping of the LA with a multielectrode catheter following PV isolation and restoration of sinus rhythm with cardioversion. A non-invasive dataset, such as clinical variables, two-and three-dimensional echocardiography determined LA size and function and fibrillatory-wave amplitude on a standard surface electrocardiogram were obtained during AF before ablation. Results: Low-voltage areas (LVA; 15 cm2 [IQR 8–31]) were detected in 56% of patients. Twenty nine percent of them presented mild, 43% moderate and 28% severe global LVA burden. In univariate analysis, age ≥ 57 years old, female sex, body surface area ≤ 1.76 m2, valvular heart disease, moderate mitral regurgitation, chronic coronary syndrome, hypothyroidism, CHA2DS2-VASc score ≥ 3 and ≥ 4 predicted the presence of LVA. In multivariate analysis only female sex, valvular heart disease and CHA2DS2-VASc ≥ 4 remained statistically significant. AF duration, LA size and function and fibrillatory-waves amplitude were neither associated with the prediction of the LVA, nor severe LVA burden. Conclusions: A LSPAF diagnosis does not indicate the presence of voltage defined fibrosis in many cases. Simple non-invasive screening of the LSPAF population could predict LVA prevalence

    Ergonomic Analysis of Veterinary Surgical Tasks

    Studies have observed injuries and musculoskeletal discomforts among surgeons in human medicine. It is likely that veterinary surgeons endure similar discomfort; however, limited work has been done in this domain. Therefore, this research aims to identify occupational risk factors affecting the upper extremities of leading and assisting surgeons in orthopedic and soft tissue small animal surgeries. As a result, we aim to reduce surgeon injuries by assessing the surgical environment in veterinary care. To collect objective metrics, inertial measurement units (IMUs), heart rate monitors, and Electromyography (EMG) sensors are used. In addition, surveys are used to evaluate perceived pain before and after surgery and the workload of the task. In total, 5 participants were studied over 26 surgeries. Postoperatively, neck discomfort was most commonly recorded. Neck discomfort was reported in two-thirds of the cases by of the orthopedic surgeons and over one-third of the soft tissue surgeries. Average perceived workload was reported higher in orthopedic surgeries compared to soft tissue surgeries. When measuring the deltoid and trapezius muscle activities, orthopedic surgeons exerted about 21% of their maximum muscle force across the two muscle groups and soft tissue surgeons exerted 12%. These results provide insight to surgeons\u27 perceived workload and physical efforts associated with performing surgery, and further applications of this work may translate to modifications to surgical environments or additional surgeon education to reduce physical strains

    Insights into mitochondrial dysfunction: aging, amyloid-β, and tau-A deleterious trio

    Significance: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related progressive neurodegenerative disorder mainly affecting elderly individuals. The pathology of AD is characterized by amyloid plaques (aggregates of amyloid-β [Aβ]) and neurofibrillary tangles (aggregates of tau), but the mechanisms underlying this dysfunction are still partially unclear. Recent Advances: A growing body of evidence supports mitochondrial dysfunction as a prominent and early, chronic oxidative stress-associated event that contributes to synaptic abnormalities and, ultimately, selective neuronal degeneration in AD. Critical Issues: In this review, we discuss on the one hand whether mitochondrial decline observed in brain aging is a determinant event in the onset of AD and on the other hand the close interrelationship of this organelle with Aβ and tau in the pathogenic process underlying AD. Moreover, we summarize evidence from aging and Alzheimer models showing that the harmful trio "aging, Aβ, and tau protein" triggers mitochondrial dysfunction through a number of pathways, such as impairment of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), elevation of reactive oxygen species production, and interaction with mitochondrial proteins, contributing to the development and progression of the disease. Future Directions: The aging process may weaken the mitochondrial OXPHOS system in a more general way over many years providing a basis for the specific and destructive effects of Aβ and tau. Establishing strategies involving efforts to protect cells at the mitochondrial level by stabilizing or restoring mitochondrial function and energy homeostasis appears to be challenging, but very promising route on the horizon

    The Carbon Monoxide Releasing Molecule CORM-2 Attenuates Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilm Formation

    Chronic infections resulting from biofilm formation are difficult to eradicate with current antimicrobial agents and consequently new therapies are needed. This work demonstrates that the carbon monoxide-releasing molecule CORM-2, previously shown to kill planktonic bacteria, also attenuates surface-associated growth of the Gram-negative pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa by both preventing biofilm maturation and killing bacteria within the established biofilm. CORM-2 treatment has an additive effect when combined with tobramycin, a drug commonly used to treat P. aeruginosa lung infections. CORM-2 inhibited biofilm formation and planktonic growth of the majority of clinical P. aeruginosa isolates tested, for both mucoid and non-mucoid strains. While CORM-2 treatment increased the production of reactive oxygen species by P. aeruginosa biofilms, this increase did not correlate with bacterial death. These data demonstrate that CO-RMs possess potential novel therapeutic properties against a subset of P. aeruginosa biofilm related infections
