Fast prediction and evaluation of gravitational waveforms using surrogate models
[Abridged] We propose a solution to the problem of quickly and accurately
predicting gravitational waveforms within any given physical model. The method
is relevant for both real-time applications and in more traditional scenarios
where the generation of waveforms using standard methods can be prohibitively
expensive. Our approach is based on three offline steps resulting in an
accurate reduced-order model that can be used as a surrogate for the
true/fiducial waveform family. First, a set of m parameter values is determined
using a greedy algorithm from which a reduced basis representation is
constructed. Second, these m parameters induce the selection of m time values
for interpolating a waveform time series using an empirical interpolant. Third,
a fit in the parameter dimension is performed for the waveform's value at each
of these m times. The cost of predicting L waveform time samples for a generic
parameter choice is of order m L + m c_f online operations where c_f denotes
the fitting function operation count and, typically, m << L. We generate
accurate surrogate models for Effective One Body (EOB) waveforms of
non-spinning binary black hole coalescences with durations as long as 10^5 M,
mass ratios from 1 to 10, and for multiple harmonic modes. We find that these
surrogates are three orders of magnitude faster to evaluate as compared to the
cost of generating EOB waveforms in standard ways. Surrogate model building for
other waveform models follow the same steps and have the same low online
scaling cost. For expensive numerical simulations of binary black hole
coalescences we thus anticipate large speedups in generating new waveforms with
a surrogate. As waveform generation is one of the dominant costs in parameter
estimation algorithms and parameter space exploration, surrogate models offer a
new and practical way to dramatically accelerate such studies without impacting

Trends in stratospheric minor constituents
Photochemical models predict that increasing source gas concentrations are also expected to lead to changes in the concentrations of both catalytically active radical species (such as NO2, ClO, and OH) and inactive reservoir species (such as HNO3, HCl, and H2O). For simplicity, we will refer to all these as trace species. Those species that are expected to have increasing concentration levels are investigated. Additionally, the trace species concentration levels are monitored for unexpected changes on the basis of the measure increase in source gases. Carrying out these investigations is difficult due to the limited data base of measurements of stratospheric trace species. In situ measurements are made only infrequently, and there are few satelliteborne measurements, most over a time space insufficient for trend determination. Instead, ground-based measurements of column content must be used for many species, and interpretation is complicated by contributions from the troposphere or mesosphere or both. Analysis of stratospheric ozone, temperature, and minor constituent data
The objective of this research is to use available satellite measurements of temperature and constituent concentrations to test the conceptual picture of stratospheric chemistry and transport. This was originally broken down into two sub-goals: first, to use the constituent data to search for critical tests of our understanding of stratospheric chemistry and second, to examine constituent transport processes emphasizing interactions with chemistry on various time scales. A third important goal which has evolved is to use the available solar backscattered ultraviolet (SBUV) and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data from Nimbus 7 to describe the morphology of recent changes in Antarctic and global ozone with emphasis on searching for constraints to theories. The major effort now being pursued relative to the two original goals is our effort as a theoretical team for the Arctic Airborne Stratospheric Expedition (AASE). Our effort for the AASE is based on the 3D transport and chemistry model at Goddard. Our goal is to use this model to place the results from the mission data in a regional and global context. Specifically, we set out to make model runs starting in late December and running through March of 1989, both with and without heterogeneous chemistry. The transport is to be carried out using dynamical fields from a 4D data assimilation model being developed under separate funding from this task. We have successfully carried out a series of single constituent transport experiments. One of the things demonstrated by these runs was the difficulty in obtaining observed low N2O abundances in the vortex without simultaneously obtaining very high ozone values. Because the runs start in late December, this difficulty arises in the attempt to define consistent initial conditions for the 3D model. To accomplish a consistent set of initial conditions, we are using the 2D photochemistry-transport model of Jackman and Douglass and mapping in potential temperature, potential vorticity space as developed by Schoeberl and coworkers
The Formal Dynamism of Categories: Stops vs. Fricatives, Primitivity vs. Simplicity
Minimalist Phonology (MP; Pöchtrager 2006) constructs its theory based on the phonological epistemological principle (Kaye 2001) and exposes the arbitrary nature of standard Government Phonology (sGP) and strict-CV (sCV), particularly with reference to their confusion of melody and structure.
For Pöchtrager, these are crucially different, concluding that place of articulation is melodic (expressed with elements), while manner of articulation is structural. In this model, the heads (xN and xO) can license and incorporate the length of the other into their own interpretation, that is xN influences xO projections as well as its own and vice versa. This dynamism is an aspect of the whole framework and this paper in particular will show that stops and fricatives evidence a plasticity of category and that, although fricatives are simpler in structure, stops are the more primitive of the two.
This will be achieved phonologically through simply unifying the environment of application of the licensing forces within Pöchtrager's otherwise sound onset structure. In doing so, we automatically make several predictions about language acquisition and typology and show how lenition in Qiang (Sino-Tibetan) can be more elegantly explained
An Enhanced Nonlinear Critical Gradient for Electron Turbulent Transport due to Reversed Magnetic Shear
The first nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of electron internal transport
barriers (e-ITBs) in the National Spherical Torus Experiment show that reversed
magnetic shear can suppress thermal transport by increasing the nonlinear
critical gradient for electron-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence to three
times its linear critical value. An interesting feature of this turbulence is
nonlinearly driven off-midplane radial streamers. This work reinforces the
experimental observation that magnetic shear is likely an effective way of
triggering and sustaining e-ITBs in magnetic fusion devices.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Severe Lumbar Disability Is Associated With Decreased Psoas Cross-Sectional Area in Degenerative Spondylolisthesis
Study Design: Retrospective cohort. Objectives: Alterations in lumbar paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) may correlate with lumbar pathology. The purpose of this study was to compare paraspinal CSA in patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis and severe lumbar disability to those with mild or moderate lumbar disability, as determined by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 101 patients undergoing lumbar fusion for degenerative spondylolisthesis. Patients were divided into ODI score ≤40 (mild/moderate disability, MMD) and ODI score \u3e40 (severe disability, SD) groups. The total CSA of the psoas and paraspinal muscles were measured on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Results: There were 37 patients in the SD group and 64 in the MMD group. Average age and body mass index were similar between groups. For the paraspinal muscles, we were unable to demonstrate any significant differences in total CSA between the groups. Psoas muscle CSA was significantly decreased in the SD group compared with the MMD group (1010.08 vs 1178.6 mm2, P =.041). Multivariate analysis found that psoas CSA in the upper quartile was significantly protective against severe disability (P =.013). Conclusions: We found that patients with severe lumbar disability had no significant differences in posterior lumbar paraspinal CSA when compared with those with mild/moderate disability. However, severely disabled patients had significantly decreased psoas CSA, and larger psoas CSA was strongly protective against severe disability, suggestive of a potential association with psoas atrophy and worsening severity of lumbar pathology. © The Author(s) 2018
