    Life Cycle Assessment with BIM Towards Sustainable Energy Policy-Making: The Case of Urban Transformation in Istanbul

    Buildings are responsible for almost forty percent of global energy. Due to their high consumption of energy, buildings are on the front line of sustainability researches. In Turkey, six million out of twenty-two million buildings need to be demolished and rebuilt to meet seismic standards. These buildings are also far below the standards in terms of energy efficiency. Therefore, urban transformation can be thought of as a great opportunity for energy efficiency. This study investigates four things: (i) the energy-efficient urban transformation strategy in GaziosmanpaÅŸa-Istanbul region, which is selected as a case study; (ii) the effect of energy efficiency in this market; (iii) the adequacy of energy standards of Turkey; and (iv) contribution of digitalization in construction to sustainability with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and energy analysis. According to the energy efficiency scenarios, energy analyses were carried out on the BIM model. The most cost-effective strategy was determined with the Life Cycle Cost method. When compared with the current situation, it is possible to save energy up to 227 GWh a year, which is equal to the annual heating energy demand of approximately 30,000 housing, in the case study area with the most efficient scenario to be realized

    Assessing performance factors for a 3PL in a value chain

    Business continuity of the logistics companies in the twenty first century highly depends on the value chain performance. As the variety of services outsourced to third party logistics (3PL) companies increase, success strategies for these companies are to be revised. This study explores and illustrates an analytical framework to assess the performance factors for 3PL companies through a managerial view. The factors integrating the strategical and operational targets are evaluated within a framework based on four levels; performance targets, planning activities, logistics operations, and performance attributes of logistics operations. The analytic network process is used to determine the most effective performance attributes. The framework is applied and studied in two major logistics companies active in the South East Europe.     An analytical framework for improving the strategical impact of customer collaboration in innovation

    Information gathered through customer collaboration has an improving importance in innovation strategies. The objective of this study is to enhance the impact of customer information in a variety of innovation fields by implementing the 'best fit' customer relationship strategy in a small company. The investigation of the alternative innovation determinants and customer relation strategies has led in defining a new framework for the selection and progress of the customer relation strategy with the focus of innovation. A combination of the Analytical Hierarchical Processing (AHP) and Delphi methods is used in designing the decision framework, which is evaluated by a case study run on five small companies representing design-based and food industries. It is observed that small companies are enthusiastic in applying innovations in various fields but are not yet aware of the importance of customer collaboration. Besides, innovation strategies are differentiated by the age and business focus of the company.     Optimization of Battery and Wind Technologies: Case of Power Deviation Penalties

    Incorporation of wind power with the current power grids and electricity related markets is an arduous task because of its volatile essence. As a result, there is a need for extra capacity as backup as wind power and battery are integral to one another. This research delves into the utilization of a lithium-ion battery storage system to reduce day ahead bid changes and market integration issues that exist due to sporadic disposition of wind power in Turkey. This research uses data from a 30 MW wind farm and considers added Lithium-ion batteries. Financial analyses have been carried out with lithium-ion investment, variable costs, and current market prices considered. Net present value of both systems was discovered as positive. This research advocates the use of storage systems for the developing countries such as Turkey. It demonstrates that with the drop of battery prices, storage systems have the potential to serve as more applicable options. Furthermore, the importance of energy storage regulation for storage system to enter the market is demonstrated
