Approximate solutions for nonlinear oscillation of a mass attached to a stretched elastic wire
AbstractIn this paper, the approximate solutions of the mathematical model of a mass attached to a stretched elastic wire are presented. At the beginning of the study, the equation of motion is derived in a detailed way. He’s max–min approach, He’s frequency–amplitude method and the parameter-expansion method are implemented to solve the established model. The numerical results are further compared with the approximate analytical solutions for both a small and large amplitude of oscillations, and a very good agreement is observed. The relative errors are computed to illustrate the strength of agreement between the numerical and approximate analytical results
Effects of Span Morphing on Flutter Characteristics of Subsonic Wing
This paper focuses on the dynamic behavior of variable-span morphing wings (VSMW) oscillating in pitch and plunge motions under subsonic flight conditions. The unswept cantilevered wing is modeled as three-stepped Euler-Bernoulli beam. The aerodynamic loads acting on the wing are represented by Theodorsen's unsteady aerodynamic theory. The differential equations of motion that describe the behavior of the dynamics of Euler-Bernoulli beam are derived through the Hamilton's principle. The differential transformation method (DTM) is implemented to equations of motion and boundary conditions. The solution of the aeroelastic system is obtained by the classical frequency domain solution, k-method. Goland wing and High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) wing are used as the basis for this study. Prior to analyzing flutter characteristics of VSMW, validation cases are conducted to ensure that the developed algorithm works well. Furthermore, flutter speed and flutter frequency are analyzed for different elongation ratios of wing. There is a significant difference in flutter values of fully retracted and fully extended wing configurations. It can be concluded that both flutter speed and flutter frequency decrease dramatically as wing span extends. Another important finding is that the flutter speed and flutter frequency reductions are relatively high at the initial stages of wing span extension
THE RELATIONS BETWEEN FAMILY CONTEXTUAL FACTORS ANDACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: SECOND-ORDER META-ANALYSIS
The present study is an attempt to give a holistic and bigger picture of the relations between family contextual factors and academic achievement by employing second-order meta-analysis to synthesize results from first-order meta-analyses. Thirteen first-order meta-analyses included in this study represent more than one thousand culturally diverse studies and cover 70 years of scholarship from 1950 to 2020. The findings revealed that the strength of the relationship between family contextual factors and achievement was at a medium level. The moderator analyses showed that family SES represented a stronger relationship with student achievement than parental behaviors such as parental involvement or expectations. We found no significant differences among other moderators, such as the academic subject domain, culture, quality assessment, report types, and year range
High-Order Energy Balance Method to Nonlinear Oscillators
Energy balance method (EBM) is extended for high-order nonlinear oscillators. To illustrate the effectiveness of the method, a cubic-quintic Duffing oscillator was chosen. The maximum relative errors of the frequencies of the oscillator read 1.25% and 0.6% for the first- and second-order approximation, respectively. The third-order approximation has an accuracy as high as 0.008%. Excellent agreement of the approximated frequencies and periodic solutions with the exact ones is demonstrated for several values of parameters of the oscillator
Serum IL-1β, IL-2, and IL-6 in Insulin-Dependent Diabetic Children
Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is a chronic disease characterized by T-cell-dependent autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing β cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans, resulting in an absolute lack of insulin. T cells are activated in response to islet-dominant autoantigens, the result being the development of IDDM. Insulin is one of the islet autoantigens responsible for the activation of T-lymphocyte functions, inflammatory cytokine production, and development of IDDM. The aim of this study was to investigate serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in children IDDM. The study population consisted of 27 children with IDDM and 25 healthy controls. Children with IDDM were divided into three subgroups: (1) previously diagnosed patients (long standing IDDM) (n : 15), (2) newly diagnosed patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (before treatment) (n : 12), and (3) newly diagnosed patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (after treatment for two weeks) (n : 12). In all stages of diabetes higher levels of IL-1β and TNF- α and lower levels of IL-2 and IL-6 were detected. Our data about elevated serum IL-1β, TNF- α and decreased IL-2, IL-6 levels in newly diagnosed IDDM patients in comparison with longer standing cases supports an activation of systemic inflammatory process during early phases of IDDM which may be indicative of an ongoing β-cell destruction. Persistence of significant difference between the cases with IDDM monitored for a long time and controls in terms of IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and TNF-α supports continuous activation during the late stages of diabetes
