Winning combinations of history-dependent games
The Parrondo effect describes the seemingly paradoxical situation in which
two losing games can, when combined, become winning [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 24
(2000)]. Here we generalize this analysis to the case where both games are
history-dependent, i.e. there is an intrinsic memory in the dynamics of each
game. New results are presented for the cases of both random and periodic
switching between the two games.Comment: (6 pages, 7 figures) Version 2: Major cosmetic changes and some minor

Targeting Mr Average: Participation, gender equity and school sport partnerships
The School Sport Partnership Programme (SSPP) is one strand of the national strategy for physical education and school sport in England, the physical education and school sport Club Links Strategy (PESSCL). The SSPP aims to make links between school physical education (PE) and out of school sports participation, and has a particular remit to raise the participation levels of several identified under-represented groups, of which girls and young women are one. National evaluations of the SSPP show that it is beginning to have positive impacts on young people's activity levels by increasing the range and provision of extra curricular activities (Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED), 2003, 2004, 2005; Loughborough Partnership, 2005, 2006). This paper contributes to the developing picture of the phased implementation of the programme by providing qualitative insights into the work of one school sport partnership with a particular focus on gender equity. The paper explores the ways in which gender equity issues have been explicitly addressed within the 'official texts' of the SSPP; how these have shifted over time and how teachers are responding to and making sense of these in their daily practice. Using participation observation, interview and questionnaire data, the paper explores how the coordinators are addressing the challenge of increasing the participation of girls and young women. The paper draws on Walby's (2000) conceptualisation of different kinds of feminist praxis to highlight the limitations of the coordinators' work. Two key themes from the data and their implications are addressed: the dominance of competitive sport practices and the PE professionals' views of targeting as a strategy for increasing the participation of under-represented groups. The paper concludes that coordinators work within an equality or difference discourse with little evidence of the transformative praxis needed for the programme to be truly inclusive. © 2008 Taylor & Francis
Geometric Effects and Computation in Spin Networks
When initially introduced, a Hamiltonian that realises perfect transfer of a
quantum state was found to be analogous to an x-rotation of a large spin. In
this paper we extend the analogy further to demonstrate geometric effects by
performing rotations on the spin. Such effects can be used to determine
properties of the chain, such as its length, in a robust manner. Alternatively,
they can form the basis of a spin network quantum computer. We demonstrate a
universal set of gates in such a system by both dynamical and geometrical
means
Distributional Modes for Scalar Field Quantization
We propose a mode-sum formalism for the quantization of the scalar field
based on distributional modes, which are naturally associated with a slight
modification of the standard plane-wave modes. We show that this formalism
leads to the standard Rindler temperature result, and that these modes can be
canonically defined on any Cauchy surface.Comment: 15 pages, RevTe
The Heat Kernel Expansion on a Cone and Quantum Fields Near Cosmic Strings
An asymptotic expansion of the trace of the heat kernel on a cone where the
heat coefficients have a delta function behavior at the apex is obtained. It is
used to derive the renormalized effective action and total energy of a
self-interacting quantum scalar field on the cosmic string space-time. Analogy
is pointed out with quantum theory with boundaries. The surface infinities in
the effective action are shown to appear and are removed by renormalization of
the string tension. Besides, the total renormalized energy turns out to be
finite due to cancelation of the known non-integrable divergence in the energy
density of the field with a counterterm in the bare string tension.Comment: 20 pages, JINR preprint August, 1993, E2-93-291, LATEX fil
Reproducing spin lattice models in strongly coupled atom-cavity systems
In an array of coupled cavities where the cavities are doped with an atomic
V-system, and the two excited levels couple to cavity photons of different
polarizations, we show how to construct various spin models employed in
characterizing phenomena in condensed matter physics, such as the spin-1/2
Ising, XX, Heisenberg, and XXZ models. The ability to construct networks of
arbitrary geometry also allows for the simulation of topological effects. By
tuning the number of excitations present, the dimension of the spin to be
simulated can be controlled, and mixtures of different spin types produced. The
facility of single-site addressing, the use of only the natural hopping photon
dynamics without external fields, and the recent experimental advances towards
strong coupling, makes the prospect of using these arrays as efficient quantum
simulators promising.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. v3: References adde
Coherent Line Removal: Filtering out harmonically related line interference from experimental data, with application to gravitational wave detectors
We describe a new technique for removing troublesome interference from
external coherent signals present in the gravitational wave spectrum. The
method works when the interference is present in many harmonics, as long as
they remain coherent with one another. The method can remove interference even
when the frequency changes. We apply the method to the data produced by the
Glasgow laser interferometer in 1996 and the entire series of wide lines
corresponding to the electricity supply frequency and its harmonics are
removed, leaving the spectrum clean enough to detect possible signals
previously masked by them. We also study the effects of the line removal on the
statistics of the noise in the time domain. We find that this technique seems
to reduce the level of non-Gaussian noise present in the interferometer and
therefore, it can raise the sensitivity and duty cycle of the detectors.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Revtex, psfig. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Brick Walls and AdS/CFT
We discuss the relationship between the bulk-boundary correspondence in
Rehren's algebraic holography (and in other 'fixed-background' approaches to
holography) and in mainstream 'Maldacena AdS/CFT'. Especially, we contrast the
understanding of black-hole entropy from the viewpoint of QFT in curved
spacetime -- in the framework of 't Hooft's 'brick wall' model -- with the
understanding based on Maldacena AdS/CFT. We show that the brick-wall
modification of a Klein Gordon field in the Hartle-Hawking-Israel state on
1+2-Schwarzschild AdS (BTZ) has a well-defined boundary limit with the same
temperature and entropy as the brick-wall-modified bulk theory. One of our main
purposes is to point out a close connection, for general AdS/CFT situations,
between the puzzle raised by Arnsdorf and Smolin regarding the relationship
between Rehren's algebraic holography and mainstream AdS/CFT and the puzzle
embodied in the 'correspondence principle' proposed by Mukohyama and Israel in
their work on the brick-wall approach to black hole entropy. Working on the
assumption that similar results will hold for bulk QFT other than the Klein
Gordon field and for Schwarzschild AdS in other dimensions, and recalling the
first author's proposed resolution to the Mukohyama-Israel puzzle based on his
'matter-gravity entanglement hypothesis', we argue that, in Maldacena AdS/CFT,
the algebra of the boundary CFT is isomorphic only to a proper subalgebra of
the bulk algebra, albeit (at non-zero temperature) the (GNS) Hilbert spaces of
bulk and boundary theories are still the 'same' -- the total bulk state being
pure, while the boundary state is mixed (thermal). We also argue from the
finiteness of its boundary (and hence, on our assumptions, also bulk) entropy
at finite temperature, that the Rehren dual of the Maldacena boundary CFT
cannot itself be a QFT and must, instead, presumably be something like a string
theory.Comment: 54 pages, 3 figures. Arguments strengthened in the light of B.S. Kay

An experimental study of the rearrangements of valence protons and neutrons amongst single-particle orbits during double {\beta} decay in 100Mo
The rearrangements of protons and neutrons amongst the valence
single-particle orbitals during double {\beta} decay of 100Mo have been
determined by measuring cross sections in (d,p), (p,d), (3He,{\alpha}) and
(3He,d) reactions on 98,100Mo and 100,102Ru targets. The deduced nucleon
occupancies reveal significant discrepancies when compared with theoretical
calculations; the same calculations have previously been used to determine the
nuclear matrix element associated with the decay probability of double {\beta}
decay of the 100Mo system.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 37 pages of supplemental informatio
