Quantum Monte Carlo Loop Algorithm for the t-J Model
We propose a generalization of the Quantum Monte Carlo loop algorithm to the
t-J model by a mapping to three coupled six-vertex models. The autocorrelation
times are reduced by orders of magnitude compared to the conventional local
algorithms. The method is completely ergodic and can be formulated directly in
continuous time. We introduce improved estimators for simulations with a local
sign problem. Some first results of finite temperature simulations are
presented for a t-J chain, a frustrated Heisenberg chain, and t-J ladder
models.Comment: 22 pages, including 12 figures. RevTex v3.0, uses psf.te
Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of infinitely strongly correlated fermions
Numerical simulations of the two-dimensional t-J model in the limit are performed for rather large systems (up to ) using a
world-line loop-algorithm. It is shown that in the one-hole case with J=0,
where no minus signs appear, very low temperatures () are
necessary in order to reach Nagaoka's state. J/t \ltsim 0.05 leads to the
formation of partially polarized systems, whereas J/t \gtsim 0.05
corresponds to minimal spin. The two-hole case shows enhanced total spin up to
the lowest attainable temperatures ().Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Phonon and plasmon excitation in inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy of graphite
The inelastic electron tunneling spectrum (IETS)of highly oriented pyrolitic
graphite (HOPG) has been measured with scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) at
6K. The observed spectral features are in very good agreement with the
vibrational density of states (vDOS) of graphite calculated from first
principles. We discuss the enhancement of certain phonon modes by
phonon-assisted tunneling in STS based on the restrictions imposed by the
electronic structure of graphite. We also demonstrate for the first time the
local excitation of surface-plasmons in IETS which are detected at an energy of
40 meV.Comment: PRB rapid communication, submitte
Diluted Josephson-junction arrays in a magnetic field: phase coherence and vortex glass thresholds
The effects of random dilution of junctions on a two-dimensional
Josephson-junction array in a magnetic field are considered. For rational
values of the average flux quantum per plaquette , the superconducting
transition temperature vanishes, for increasing dilution, at a critical value
, while the vortex ordering remains stable up to , much
below the value corresponding to the geometric percolation threshold. For
, the array behaves as a zero-temperature vortex-glass.
Numerical results for from defect energy calculations are presented
which are consistent with this scenario.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Infrared optical properties of Pr2CuO4
The ab-plane reflectance of a Pr2CuO4 single crystal has been measured over a
wide frequency range at a variety of temperatures, and the optical properties
determined from a Kramers-Kronig analysis. Above ~ 250 K, the low frequency
conductivity increases quickly with temperature; the resistivity follows the
form e^(E_a/k_BT), where E_a ~ 0.17 eV is much less than the inferred optical
gap of ~ 1.2 eV. Transport measurements show that at low temperature the
resistivity deviates from activated behavior and follows the form
e^[(T_0/T)^1/4], indicating that the dc transport in this material is due to
variable-range hopping between localized states in the gap. The four
infrared-active Eu modes dominate the infrared optical properties. Below ~ 200
K, a striking new feature appears near the low-frequency Eu mode, and there is
additional new fine structure at high frequency. A normal coordinate analysis
has been performed and the detailed nature of the zone-center vibrations
determined. Only the low-frequency Eu mode has a significant Pr-Cu interaction.
Several possible mechanisms related to the antiferromagnetism in this material
are proposed to explain the sudden appearance of this and other new spectral
features at low temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 7 embedded EPS figures, REVTeX
CVM studies on the atomic ordering in complex perovskite alloys
The atomic ordering in complex perovskite alloys is investigated by the
cluster variation method (CVM). For the 1/3\{111\}-type ordered structure, the
order-disorder phase transition is the first order, and the order parameter of
the 1:2 complex perovskite reaches its maximum near x=0.25. For the
1/2\{111\}-type ordered structure, the ordering transition is the second order.
Phase diagrams for both ordered structures are obtained. The order-disorder
line obeys the linear law.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Weak and strong solutions of equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics
International audienceThis article proposes a review of the analysis of the system of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). First, we give an account of the modelling asumptions. Then, the results of existence of weak solutions, using the notion of renormalized solutions. Then, existence of strong solutions in the neighbourhood of equilibrium states is reviewed, in particular with the method of Kawashima and Shizuta. Finally, the special case of dimension one is highlighted : the use of Lagrangian coordinates gives a simpler system, which is solved by standard techniques
Cognitive appraisal of environmental stimuli induces emotion-like states in fish
The occurrence of emotions in non-human animals has been the focus of debate over the years. Recently, an interest in expanding this debate to non-tetrapod vertebrates and to invertebrates has emerged. Within vertebrates, the study of emotion in teleosts is particularly interesting since they represent a divergent evolutionary radiation from that of tetrapods, and thus they provide an insight into the evolution of the biological mechanisms of emotion. We report that Sea Bream exposed to stimuli that vary according to valence (positive, negative) and salience (predictable, unpredictable) exhibit different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states. Since according to the dimensional theory of emotion valence and salience define a two-dimensional affective space, our data can be interpreted as evidence for the occurrence of distinctive affective states in fish corresponding to each the four quadrants of the core affective space. Moreover, the fact that the same stimuli presented in a predictable vs. unpredictable way elicited different behavioural, physiological and neuromolecular states, suggests that stimulus appraisal by the individual, rather than an intrinsic characteristic of the stimulus, has triggered the observed responses. Therefore, our data supports the occurrence of emotion-like states in fish that are regulated by the individual's perception of environmental stimuli.European Commission [265957 Copewell]; Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia [SFRH/BD/80029/2011, SFRH/BPD/72952/2010]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Incompressible limit of the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with vanishing viscosity coefficients
This paper is concerned with the incompressible limit of the compressible
magnetohydrodynamic equations with vanishing viscosity coefficients and general
initial data in the whole space or 3). It is rigorously
showed that, as the Mach number, the shear viscosity coefficient and the
magnetic diffusion coefficient simultaneously go to zero, the weak solution of
the compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations converges to the strong solution
of the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations as long as the latter
exists.Comment: 17pages. We have improved our paper according to the referees'

New Physics in Bs -> J/psi phi: a General Analysis
Recently, the CDF and D0 collaborations measured indirect CP violation in Bs
-> J/psi phi and found a hint of a signal. If taken at face value, this can be
interpreted as a nonzero phase of Bs-Bsbar mixing (beta_s), in disagreement
with the standard model, which predicts that beta_s ~= 0. In this paper, we
argue that this analysis may be incomplete. In particular, there can be new
physics (NP) in the bbar -> sbar c cbar decay. If so, the value of beta_s is
different than for the case in which NP is assumed to be present only in the
mixing. We have examined several models of NP and found that, indeed, there can
be significant contributions to the decay. These effects are consistent with
measurements in B -> J/psi K* and Bd -> J/psi Ks. Due to the NP in the decay,
polarization-dependent indirect CP asymmetries and triple-product asymmetries
are predicted in Bs -> J/psi phi.Comment: 28 pages, JHEP, no figures. Considerable changes made. Abstract and
