Angular distributions of γ rays from the 7Li(p,γ) reaction at low energies

    Get PDF
Angular distributions of the 14–17 MeV γ rays from the 7Li(p,γ) reaction at Ep=450, 402, and 80 keV were measured at 0°≤θlab≤135°, using a BGO detector and a 28-μg/cm2 LiF target. The angular distributions at Ep=450 and 402 keV agree with the previous results by Mainsbridge; at Ep=80 keV the ground-state transition is anisotropic on the order of 20%, confirming recent results by Chasteler et al

The impact of post-abortion care family planning counselling and services in low-income countries: a systematic review of the evidence

    Get PDF
Unsafe abortions account for around 70,000 deaths each year, almost all of them in the developing world. Millions of women suffer permanent injury or chronic illness, adding a high cost to both individual families and health systems. Since the mid 1990s, post-abortion care has become a central part of the international strategy to address this problem. Although most attention has been paid to improving emergency treatment of abortion complications, the other elements of post-abortion care, including providing family planning counselling and services, have also been promoted and can be found in many health-care settings around the world. Although greater use of contraception will not produce direct, immediate effects on maternal mortality or morbidity, over time it should reduce women's recourse to unsafe abortion by preventing unplanned pregnancies, thereby putting women at less risk of lifelong injury or death. In 2010, the UK government strengthened its commitment to family planning as a strategy to reduce maternal mortality, marking a significant shift in the UK‟s approach to addressing the most off-track Millennium Development Goal: to improve material health. Addressing the unmet need for post-abortion family planning counselling and services to prevent repeat unplanned pregnancies remains a key part of the new developments in policy. It is therefore both vital and timely to increase understanding of the impacts of such programmes, in order to ensure that they are effective in delivering positive outcomes for women and provide value for money. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesise the relevant research literature, thereby contributing to what is a relatively unexamined field. It addressed the question: What is the impact of post-abortion care family planning counselling and services in low-income countries on maternal mortality or morbidity, repeat induced abortions or unplanned pregnancies, or acceptance or use of contraception

Identifying the ground state structures of point defects in solids

    Get PDF
Point defects are a universal feature of crystals. Their identification is addressed by combining experimental measurements with theoretical models. The standard modelling approach is, however, prone to missing the ground state atomic configurations associated with energy-lowering reconstructions from the idealised crystallographic environment. Missed ground states compromise the accuracy of calculated properties. To address this issue, we report an approach to navigate the defect configurational landscape using targeted bond distortions and rattling. Application of our workflow to eight materials (CdTe, GaAs, Sb2S3, Sb2Se3, CeO2, In2O3, ZnO, anatase-TiO2) reveals symmetry breaking in each host crystal that is not found via conventional local minimisation techniques. The point defect distortions are classified by the associated physico-chemical factors. We demonstrate the impact of these defect distortions on derived properties, including formation energies, concentrations and charge transition levels. Our work presents a step forward for quantitative modelling of imperfect solids

Experiments on computer assisted optimization of the escherichia coli fermentation process using Optferm

    Get PDF
We used the software Optferm to model and optimize the bioprocess of escherichia coli fermentation, simulating the conditions of a fed-batch bioreactor. The results, obtained by employing different AI approaches, provided useful orientation for nutrient feed strategies for increased productivity. In conclusion, we believe in silico tools can perform a rapid and valid optimization of bioprocesses avoiding expensive experiments

Faster radial strain relaxation in InAs-GaAs core-shell heterowires

    Get PDF
The structure of wurtzite and zinc blende InAs-GaAs (001) core-shell nanowires grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs (001) substrates has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Heterowires with InAs core radii exceeding 11 nm, strain relax through the generation of misfit dislocations, given a GaAs shell thickness greater than 2.5 nm. Strain relaxation is larger in radial directions than axial, particularly for shell thicknesses greater than 5.0 nm, consistent with molecular statics calculations that predict a large shear stress concentration at each interface corner

Two physical characteristics of numerical apparent horizons

This article translates some recent results on quasilocal horizons into the language of (3+1)(3+1) general relativity so as to make them more useful to numerical relativists. In particular quantities are described which characterize how quickly an apparent horizon is evolving and how close it is to either equilibrium or extremality.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, conference proceedings loosely based on talk given at Theory Canada III (Edmonton, Alberta, 2007). High-latitude artificial aurora using the EISCAT high-gain HF facility

    Get PDF
The EISCAT high-frequency (HF) transmitter facility at Ramfjord, Norway, has been used to accelerate F-region electrons sufficiently to excite the oxygen atoms and nitrogen molecules, resulting in optical emissions at 630, 557.7 and 427.8 nm. During O-mode transmissions at 5.423 MHz, using 630 MW effective radiated power, in the hours after sunset on 12 November 2001 several new observations were made, including: (1) The first high-latitude observation of an HF induced optical emission at 427.8 nm and (2) Optical rings being formed at HF on followed by their collapse into a central blob. Both discoveries remain unexplained with current theories

Management Accountant's Role and Functions in the Enterprise Resource Planning Environment - Author's Own Research into Enterprises in Poland

    Get PDF
This article seeks to answer whether the implementation of an ERP system has an effect on the management accountant's tasks and functions, especially in the field of performance measurement and internal reporting. The ERP impacts on the controller's role in the organization will be evaluated using field studies on six enterprises owned by multinational corporations. The question that should be asked here is whether controller's functions and tasks will also be unaffected.

Structure Effects on Coulomb Dissociation of 8^8B

    Get PDF
Coulomb Dissociation provides an alternative method for determining the radiative capture cross sections at astrophysically relevant low relative energies. For the breakup of 8^8B on 58^{58}Ni, we calculate the total Coulomb Dissociation cross section and the angular distribution for E1, E2 and M1. Our calculations are performed first within the standard first order semiclassical theory of Coulomb Excitation, including the correct three body kinematics, and later including the projectile-target nuclear interactions.Comment: 6 pages, proceedings from International Workshop on RNB, Puri, India, January 1998 - to be published in J.
