Conductivity of boules of single crystal sodium beta-alumina
The ionic and electrochemical polarization characteristics of two boules of single crystal sodium beta-alumina (Na2O.8Al2O3), 2 cm in diameter, were investigated over the range of 25 to 300 C using 2- and 4-probe ac and dc techniques with reversible and ion-blocking electrodes. Textural (or internal) polarization at 27 C was present only in boule 1 which cleaved easily. Interfacial polarization, using solid sodium electrodes, was present at 27 C in the 2-probe conductivities for both boules. Cleaning with liquid sodium at 300 C reduced its magnitude, but some interfacial polarization was still present in the 2-probe conductivities for boule 2 below about 140 C. Above 140 C, with liquid sodium electrodes, the 2-probe conductivities, essentially polarization-free, were given by KT = 3300 exp(-3650/RT). The conductivity of boule 2 at 180 C remained essentially constant with increasing current density up to about 140 milliamps per square centimeter
Stability of mode-locked kinks in the ac driven and damped sine-Gordon lattice
Kink dynamics in the underdamped and strongly discrete sine-Gordon lattice
that is driven by the oscillating force is studied. The investigation is
focused mostly on the properties of the mode-locked states in the {\it
overband} case, when the driving frequency lies above the linear band. With the
help of Floquet theory it is demonstrated that the destabilizing of the
mode-locked state happens either through the Hopf bifurcation or through the
tangential bifurcation. It is also observed that in the overband case the
standing mode-locked kink state maintains its stability for the bias amplitudes
that are by the order of magnitude larger than the amplitudes in the

On the Usability of Probably Approximately Correct Implication Bases
We revisit the notion of probably approximately correct implication bases
from the literature and present a first formulation in the language of formal
concept analysis, with the goal to investigate whether such bases represent a
suitable substitute for exact implication bases in practical use-cases. To this
end, we quantitatively examine the behavior of probably approximately correct
implication bases on artificial and real-world data sets and compare their
precision and recall with respect to their corresponding exact implication
bases. Using a small example, we also provide qualitative insight that
implications from probably approximately correct bases can still represent

Predicting Acute Kidney Injury at Hospital Re-entry Using High-dimensional Electronic Health Record Data
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), a sudden decline in kidney function, is associated
with increased mortality, morbidity, length of stay, and hospital cost. Since
AKI is sometimes preventable, there is great interest in prediction. Most
existing studies consider all patients and therefore restrict to features
available in the first hours of hospitalization. Here, the focus is instead on
rehospitalized patients, a cohort in which rich longitudinal features from
prior hospitalizations can be analyzed. Our objective is to provide a risk
score directly at hospital re-entry. Gradient boosting, penalized logistic
regression (with and without stability selection), and a recurrent neural
network are trained on two years of adult inpatient EHR data (3,387 attributes
for 34,505 patients who generated 90,013 training samples with 5,618 cases and
84,395 controls). Predictions are internally evaluated with 50 iterations of
5-fold grouped cross-validation with special emphasis on calibration, an
analysis of which is performed at the patient as well as hospitalization level.
Error is assessed with respect to diagnosis, race, age, gender, AKI
identification method, and hospital utilization. In an additional experiment,
the regularization penalty is severely increased to induce parsimony and
interpretability. Predictors identified for rehospitalized patients are also
reported with a special analysis of medications that might be modifiable risk
factors. Insights from this study might be used to construct a predictive tool
for AKI in rehospitalized patients. An accurate estimate of AKI risk at
hospital entry might serve as a prior for an admitting provider or another

Status of Acropora palmata Populations off the Coast of South Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands
This study is the first detailed assessment of A. palmata populations of the Turks and Caicos Islands. A total of 203 individual colonies and 62 thickets were tagged on five shallow reefs. Depth, percentages of living tissue, recent mortality and old skeleton were estimated. Presence of disease and predatory snails was noted, and disease spread and grazing rates of the snails estimated. Colonies were found in depths of 0.2 - 4 m. Living tissue for individual colonies (75.9% ± 2.2 SE) was significantly greater than for thickets (58.6% ± 3.6) and in both cases exceeded old skeleton (individuals: 22.7% ± 2.1 SE, thickets: 38.0% ± 3.4 SE). Percentage of recent mortality was very low (individuals: 1.3% ± 0.3 SE, thickets: 3.4% ± 0.7%). We found WBD (n = 2), white pox disease a (WPDa) (n = 7) and white pox disease b (WPDb) (n = 14) with greatly varying spreading rates. The WBD infected colonies showed an atypical spread from the top of the branch towards the base. Coralliophila abbreviata and C. caribaea affected 3 .7 54.7% of the populations (grazing rate: 4.29 cm 2 /day/snail ± 1.16 SE). South Caicos’ A. palmata populations are still in good condition, though increasing human disturbances combined with disease and predatory snails may threaten these populations
Assembly induced delaminations in composite structures
Experimental and analytical studies of the development of delaminations around fastener holes in composite structures are presented. This type of delamination is known to occur in composite skins that are mechanically fastened to a poorly mating substructure. Results of an experimental study to determine the resistance of laminates to the initiation of assembly induced delaminations and the residual strength of assembly damaged coupons are presented for AS4/3501-6, IM7/8551-7A, and AS4/PEEK material systems. A survey of existing analytical models for predicting the residual strength and stability of delaminations is presented, and the development of a new model for predicting the initiation of delaminations around a fastener hole is outlined. The fastener hole damage initiation model utilizes a finite element based Fourier series solution, and is validated through comparisons of analytical and experimental results
Self-Assembly of 4-sided Fractals in the Two-handed Tile Assembly Model
We consider the self-assembly of fractals in one of the most well-studied
models of tile based self-assembling systems known as the Two-handed Tile
Assembly Model (2HAM). In particular, we focus our attention on a class of
fractals called discrete self-similar fractals (a class of fractals that
includes the discrete Sierpi\'nski carpet). We present a 2HAM system that
finitely self-assembles the discrete Sierpi\'nski carpet with scale factor 1.
Moreover, the 2HAM system that we give lends itself to being generalized and we
describe how this system can be modified to obtain a 2HAM system that finitely
self-assembles one of any fractal from an infinite set of fractals which we
call 4-sided fractals. The 2HAM systems we give in this paper are the first
examples of systems that finitely self-assemble discrete self-similar fractals
at scale factor 1 in a purely growth model of self-assembly. Finally, we show
that there exists a 3-sided fractal (which is not a tree fractal) that cannot
be finitely self-assembled by any 2HAM system
