    A synthesis of Beyond-GDP metrics for Wellbeing, Inclusion, and Sustainability including a deep-dive into EU metrics and their role in governance

    For decades, there has been criticism of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a measure of social progress. Many measurement systems, including indexes (which summarise progress in one number) or dashboards of indicators, have been proposed by academics, NGOs, international institutes and governments. To overcomes the great heterogeneity, consolidation of methodologies and terminology is needed. This report offers a synthesizing framework to categorise the most important Beyond-GDP metrics using a conceptual framework based on the Brundtland and Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi reports. The framework helps to focus on the commonalties between metrics rather than the differences. The “WISE” framework distinguishes three dimensions: wellbeing of current generations (“Wellbeing”), distribution of wellbeing (“Inclusion”) and wellbeing of future generations (“Sustainability”). The synthesis shows that it is possible to categorise Beyond-GDP metrics using this framework, despite the measurement systems coming from different scientific schools of thought (including welfare economics, needs theories and system-based assessments). An inventory of the many initiatives of governments around the world is also provided as well as an analysis of the influential Beyond-GDP metrics. In addition, this report also contains an in-depth discussion of eleven dashboards that are used in European policymaking to illuminate the ability of metrics to effectively steer policymaking into desirable directions. The deep-dive into these monitoring and evaluation frameworks indicates that sustainability is currently the main political priority, with binding political targets having been enacted in this domain. There is, however, a bias towards the environmental dimension of sustainability, while other factors that might affect future wellbeing such as an aging population, are underrepresented. Inclusion is the secondary focus of current EU policymaking, covering a wide range of issues such as income disparities, gender equality, and energy poverty. Wellbeing – while being generally well represented – was found to lack a holistic policy framework. Lastly, the analysis highlighted that using metrics for formulating binding targets and instituting enforcement mechanisms is key to making them matter for policymaking. This report shows that the WISE framework is a useful way of synthesising the multitude of Beyond-GDP metrics, which could be very important in the various UN and EC processes currently underway

    Review of macroeconomic approaches to modelling Wellbeing, Inclusion, and Sustainability

    In response to the urgent global challenges of climate change and rising inequality, the need to re-evaluate our traditional economic models and adopt new approaches focused on sustainability, wellbeing, and inclusion has become evident. The current economic paradigms, based on equilibrium thinking and GDP-centric measurements, have proven inadequate in addressing the intricate interplay between economic, social, and environmental dimensions. As we embark on a transformative journey towards a sustainable and equitable future, it is crucial to adopt diverse modelling approaches to provide policymakers and stakeholders with informed decision-making tools. This report delves into the analysis of five different macroeconomic model types (general equilibrium models, macro-econometric & input-output models, stockflow-consistent models, integrated assessment models, and system dynamics models), evaluating their respective strengths and weaknesses to propose an integrated framework that encompasses the multifaceted nature of our world. A key recommendation is to improve existing models by enhancing their dynamics and feedback loops between dimensions and systems, thus better reflecting the interactions and effects of different social and economic policies. Striking a balance between complexity and transparency is essential, ensuring that models remain flexible and capable of linking with models with greater detail but narrower focus. The report emphasizes the incorporation of WISE accounts (detailed data on Wellbeing, Inclusion, Sustainability, and Economy that will be collected and harmonized during the project) into macroeconomic models as an opportunity to overcome the challenge of data availability, which poses a significant obstacle in modelling endeavours. Robust and reliable data sources are crucial to the success of any model and require continual improvement in data collection processes. To broaden our understanding of the dynamics of WISE dimensions and the potential impacts of policies, integrating alternative perspectives, such as heterodox economics, can offer valuable insights. Co-creating quantitative analysis with stakeholders enhances ownership and uptake of the models and may help with bridging the gap between research and policy implementation. Furthermore, an integrated modelling framework that accounts for the non-linear interactions between human and earth systems is necessary to properly assess policies tackling 21st century challenges in the context of WISE dimensions. This integrated model should draw upon the data of WISE accounts and synergize elements of Input-Output models, System-Dynamics, and Stock-Flow consistent models to provide a structured tool for policymakers and researchers in shaping a sustainable and inclusive future

    Size-Ramsey numbers of structurally sparse graphs

    Size-Ramsey numbers are a central notion in combinatorics and have been widely studied since their introduction by Erd\H{o}s, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp in 1978. Research has mainly focused on the size-Ramsey numbers of nn-vertex graphs with constant maximum degree Δ\Delta. For example, graphs which also have constant treewidth are known to have linear size-Ramsey numbers. On the other extreme, the canonical examples of graphs of unbounded treewidth are the grid graphs, for which the best known bound has only very recently been improved from O(n3/2)O(n^{3/2}) to O(n5/4)O(n^{5/4}) by Conlon, Nenadov and Truji\'c. In this paper, we prove a common generalization of these results by establishing new bounds on the size-Ramsey numbers in terms of treewidth (which may grow as a function of nn). As a special case, this yields a bound of O~(n3/21/2Δ)\tilde{O}(n^{3/2 - 1/2\Delta}) for proper minor-closed classes of graphs. In particular, this bound applies to planar graphs, addressing a question of Wood. Our proof combines methods from structural graph theory and classic Ramsey-theoretic embedding techniques, taking advantage of the product structure exhibited by graphs with bounded treewidth.Comment: 21 page

    Evaluation of bicinchoninic acid as a ligand for copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne bioconjugations

In this study we evaluate the use of bicinchoninic acid (BCA) as a ligand for Cu(I) under physiological reaction conditions. We demonstrate that the BCA–Cu(I)-complex represents an efficient catalyst for the conjugation of fluorophores or biotin to alkyne- or azide-functionalized proteins resulting in increased or at least equal reaction yields compared to commonly used catalysts like Cu(I) in complex with TBTA (tris[(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl]amine) or BPAA (bathophenanthroline disulfonic acid).     Country Report on Organic Farming Research in Switzerland

    The report presents the current (2005) status of organic farming resarch in Switzerland. Switzerland has a long history of organic farming research, which in its beginnings has been carried out by organic farming pioneers and by private institutions like the Goetheanum, Möschberg Centre and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL). It was in the 1990s, when Swiss Federal Agricultural Research Stations (Agroscope) became also involved in organic research topics. It can be estimated that currently approximately € 7.5 million per annum are allocated very specifically to organic farming research from public budgets. The National Research Programme is organised according to a four-year research concept of the Swiss Federal Office of Agriculture (FOAG). Within this concept, organic farming is considered as an important issue of Swiss agricultural research, and research for organic farming is carried out as a continuous process. The Research Institute of Organic Farming (FiBL) is doing research exclusively for organic farming, whereas at the Federal Agricultural Research Stations research for integrated and organic farming is carried out in parallel. Together with the activities of FiBL, all relevant agricultural topics such as plant production, animal health and husbandry, food quality and socioeconomics are covered and carried out in the context of organic farming.     Defining quantitative stream disturbance gradients and the additive role of habitat variation to explain macroinvertebrate taxa richness

    Most studies dealing with the use of ecological indicators and other applied ecological research rely on some definition or concept of what constitutes least-, intermediate- and most-disturbed condition. Currently, most rigorous methodologies designed to define those conditions are suited to large spatial extents (nations, ecoregions) and many sites (hundreds to thousands). The objective of this study was to describe a methodology to quantitatively define a disturbance gradient for 40 sites in each of two small southeastern Brazil river basins. The assessment of anthropogenic disturbance experienced by each site was based solely on measurements strictly related to the intensity and extent of anthropogenic pressures. We calculated two indices: one concerned site-scale pressures and the other catchment-scale pressures. We combined those two indices into a single integrated disturbance index (IDI) because disturbances operating at both scales affect stream biota. The local- and catchment-scale disturbance indices were weakly correlated in the two basins (r = 0.21 and 0.35) and both significantly (p \u3c 0.05) reduced site EPT (insect orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera) richness. The IDI also performed well in explaining EPT richness in the basin that presented the stronger disturbance gradient (R2 = 0.39, p \u3c 0.001). Natural habitat variability was assessed as a second source of variation in EPT richness. Stream size and microhabitats were the key habitat characteristics not related to disturbances that enhanced the explanation of EPT richness over that attributed to the IDI. In both basins the IDI plus habitat metrics together explained around 50% of EPT richness variation. In the basin with the weaker disturbance gradient, natural habitat explained more variation in EPT richness than did the IDI, a result that has implications for biomonitoring studies. We conclude that quantitatively defined disturbance gradients offer a reliable and comprehensive characterization of anthropogenic pressure that integrates data from different spatial scales

    Role of risk stratification by SPECT, PET, and hybrid imaging in guiding management of stable patients with ischaemic heart disease: expert panel of the EANM cardiovascular committee and EACVI

    Risk stratification has become increasingly important in the management of patients with suspected or known ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Recent guidelines recommend that these patients have their care driven by risk assessment. The purpose of this position statement is to summarize current evidence on the value of cardiac single-photon emission computed tomography, positron emission tomography, and hybrid imaging in risk stratifying asymptomatic or symptomatic patients with suspected IHD, patients with stable disease, patients after coronary revascularization, heart failure patients, and specific patient population. In addition, this position statement evaluates the impact of imaging results on clinical decision-making and thereby its role in patient management.     Caffeine Impairs Myocardial Blood Flow Response to Physical Exercise in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease as well as in Age-Matched Controls

    BACKGROUND: Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed pharmacologically active substances. Its acute effect on myocardial blood flow is widely unknown. Our aim was to assess the acute effect of caffeine in a dose corresponding to two cups of coffee on myocardial blood flow (MBF) in coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: MBF was measured with (15)O-labelled H2O and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) at rest and after supine bicycle exercise in controls (n = 15, mean age 58+/-13 years) and in CAD patients (n = 15, mean age 61+/-9 years). In the latter, regional MBF was assessed in segments subtended by stenotic and remote coronary arteries. All measurements were repeated fifty minutes after oral caffeine ingestion (200 mg). Myocardial perfusion reserve (MPR) was calculated as ratio of MBF during bicycle stress divided by MBF at rest. Resting MBF was not affected by caffeine in both groups. Exercise-induced MBF response decreased significantly after caffeine in controls (2.26+/-0.56 vs. 2.02+/-0.56, P<0.005), remote (2.40+/-0.70 vs. 1.78+/-0.46, P<0.001) and in stenotic segments (1.90+/-0.41 vs. 1.38+/-0.30, P<0.001). Caffeine decreased MPR significantly by 14% in controls (P<0.05 vs. baseline). In CAD patients MPR decreased by 18% (P<0.05 vs. baseline) in remote and by 25% in stenotic segments (P<0.01 vs. baseline). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that caffeine impairs exercise-induced hyperaemic MBF response in patients with CAD to a greater degree than age-matched controls
