Self-consistent analytic solution for the current and the access resistance in open ion channels.

    Get PDF
A self-consistent analytic approach is introduced for the estimation of the access resistance and the current through an open ion channel for an arbitrary number of species. For an ion current flowing radially inward from infinity to the channel mouth, the Poisson-Boltzmann-Nernst-Planck equations are solved analytically in the bulk with spherical symmetry in three dimensions, by linearization. Within the channel, the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation is solved analytically in a one-dimensional approximation. An iterative procedure is used to match the two solutions together at the channel mouth in a self-consistent way. It is shown that the currentvoltage characteristics obtained are in good quantitative agreement with experimental measurements

Monte Carlo Study of the Square-Lattice Annealed Ising Model on Percolating Clusters

Simulations of an Ising q-state Pods model which is equivalent to the Ising model on annealed percolation clusters are used to determine the phase diagram of the model in two dimensions. Three topologically different phase diagrams are obtained: (i) for q=2, there are two critical Ising lines meeting at T=0 at the four-state Potts critical point; (ii) for 24, the Ising:critical line intersects a Line of first-order transitions at a critical end point

Radio-frequency dressing of multiple Feshbach resonances

We demonstrate and theoretically analyze the dressing of several proximate Feshbach resonances in Rb-87 using radio-frequency (rf) radiation. We present accurate measurements and characterizations of the resonances, and the dramatic changes in scattering properties that can arise through the rf dressing. Our scattering theory analysis yields quantitative agreement with the experimental data. We also present a simple interpretation of our results in terms of rf-coupled bound states interacting with the collision threshold.Comment: 4+ pages, 3 figures, 1 table; revised introduction & references to reflect published versio

Slicing Sets and Measures, and the Dimension of Exceptional Parameters

We consider the problem of slicing a compact metric space \Omega with sets of the form \pi_{\lambda}^{-1}\{t\}, where the mappings \pi_{\lambda} \colon \Omega \to \R, \lambda \in \R, are \emph{generalized projections}, introduced by Yuval Peres and Wilhelm Schlag in 2000. The basic question is: assuming that \Omega has Hausdorff dimension strictly greater than one, what is the dimension of the 'typical' slice \pi_{\lambda}^{-1}{t}, as the parameters \lambda and t vary. In the special case of the mappings \pi_{\lambda} being orthogonal projections restricted to a compact set \Omega \subset \R^{2}, the problem dates back to a 1954 paper by Marstrand: he proved that for almost every \lambda there exist positively many tRt \in \R such that \dim \pi_{\lambda}^{-1}{t} = \dim \Omega - 1. For generalized projections, the same result was obtained 50 years later by J\"arvenp\"a\"a, J\"arvenp\"a\"a and Niemel\"a. In this paper, we improve the previously existing estimates by replacing the phrase 'almost all \lambda' with a sharp bound for the dimension of the exceptional parameters.Comment: 31 pages, three figures; several typos corrected and large parts of the third section rewritten in v3; to appear in J.
