Monolithic integration of a GaAlAs buried-heterostructure laser and a bipolar phototransistor
A GaAlAs buried-heterostructure laser has been monolithically integrated with a bipolar phototransistor. The heterojunction transistor was formed by the regrowth of the burying layers of the laser. Typical threshold current values for the lasers were 30 mA. Common-emitter current gains for the phototransistor of 100â400 and light responsivity of 75 A/W (for wavelengths of 0.82 ”m) at collector current levels of 15 mA were obtained
Reconstruction methods for acoustic particle detection in the deep sea using clusters of hydrophones
This article focuses on techniques for acoustic noise reduction, signal
filters and source reconstruction. For noise reduction, bandpass filters and
cross correlations are found to be efficient and fast ways to improve the
signal to noise ratio and identify a possible neutrino-induced acoustic signal.
The reconstruction of the position of an acoustic point source in the sea is
performed by using small-volume clusters of hydrophones (about 1 cubic meter)
for direction reconstruction by a beamforming algorithm. The directional
information from a number of such clusters allows for position reconstruction.
The algorithms for data filtering, direction and position reconstruction are
explained and demonstrated using simulated data.Comment: 7 pages, 13 figure
Evaluation of the health-related quality of life of children in Schistosoma haematobium-endemic communities in Kenya: a cross-sectional study.
BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains a global public health challenge, with 93% of the ~237 million infections occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. Though rarely fatal, its recurring nature makes it a lifetime disorder with significant chronic health burdens. Much of its negative health impact is due to non-specific conditions such as anemia, undernutrition, pain, exercise intolerance, poor school performance, and decreased work capacity. This makes it difficult to estimate the disease burden specific to schistosomiasis using the standard DALY metric.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In our study, we used Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), a modular instrument available for ages 2-18 years, to assess health-related quality of life (HrQoL) among children living in a Schistosoma haematobium-endemic area in coastal Kenya. The PedsQL questionnaires were administered by interview to children aged 5-18 years (and their parents) in five villages spread across three districts. HrQoL (total score) was significantly lower in villages with high prevalence of S. haematobium (-4.0%, p<0.001) and among the lower socioeconomic quartiles (-2.0%, p<0.05). A greater effect was seen in the psychosocial scales as compared to the physical function scale. In moderate prevalence villages, detection of any parasite eggs in the urine was associated with a significant 2.1% (p<0.05) reduction in total score. The PedsQL reliabilities were generally high (Cronbach alphas â„0.70), floor effects were acceptable, and identification of children from low socioeconomic standing was valid.
CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We conclude that exposure to urogenital schistosomiasis is associated with a 2-4% reduction in HrQoL. Further research is warranted to determine the reproducibility and responsiveness properties of QoL testing in relation to schistosomiasis. We anticipate that a case definition based on more sensitive parasitological diagnosis among younger children will better define the immediate and long-term HrQoL impact of Schistosoma infection
P-ANCA vasculitic neuropathy with 12-year latency between onset of neuropathy and systemic symptoms
BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of chronic progressive multifocal asymmetric neuropathies is challenging. Vasculitic neuropathies, multifocal forms of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, multifocal motor neuropathies, and asymmetric lower motor neuron disorders are important considerations. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a patient with an unusually long 12-year course of nonsystemic vasculitic neuropathy prior to the development of systemic manifestations. CONCLUSION: We discuss some of the difficulties involved in the diagnosis of chronic progressive multifocal asymmetric neuropathies
Weak local rules for planar octagonal tilings
We provide an effective characterization of the planar octagonal tilings
which admit weak local rules. As a corollary, we show that they are all based
on quadratic irrationalities, as conjectured by Thang Le in the 90s.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure
Anomalous Proximity Effect in Underdoped YBaCuO Josephson Junctions
Josephson junctions were photogenerated in underdoped thin films of the
YBaCuO family using a near-field scanning optical microscope.
The observation of the Josephson effect for separations as large as 100 nm
between two wires indicates the existence of an anomalously large proximity
effect and show that the underdoped insulating material in the gap of the
junction is readily perturbed into the superconducting state. The critical
current of the junctions was found to be consistent with the conventional
Josephson relationship. This result constrains the applicability of SO(5)
theory to explain the phase diagram of high critical temperature
superconductors.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Interpreting ambiguous âtraceâ results in Schistosoma mansoni CCA Tests: Estimating sensitivity and specificity of ambiguous results with no gold standard
Background The development of new diagnostics is an important tool in the fight against disease. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) is used to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of tests in the absence of a gold standard. The main field diagnostic for Schistosoma mansoni infection, Kato-Katz (KK), is not very sensitive at low infection intensities. A point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) test has been shown to be more sensitive than KK. However, CCA can return an ambiguous âtraceâ result between âpositiveâ and ânegativeâ, and much debate has focused on interpretation of traces results. Methodology/Principle findings We show how LCA can be extended to include ambiguous trace results and analyse S. mansoni studies from both CĂŽte dâIvoire (CdI) and Uganda. We compare the diagnostic performance of KK and CCA and the observed results by each test to the estimated infection prevalence in the population. Prevalence by KK was higher in CdI (13.4%) than in Uganda (6.1%), but prevalence by CCA was similar between countries, both when trace was assumed to be negative (CCAtn: 11.7% in CdI and 9.7% in Uganda) and positive (CCAtp: 20.1% in CdI and 22.5% in Uganda). The estimated sensitivity of CCA was more consistent between countries than the estimated sensitivity of KK, and estimated infection prevalence did not significantly differ between CdI (20.5%) and Uganda (19.1%). The prevalence by CCA with trace as positive did not differ significantly from estimates of infection prevalence in either country, whereas both KK and CCA with trace as negative significantly underestimated infection prevalence in both countries. Conclusions Incorporation of ambiguous results into an LCA enables the effect of different treatment thresholds to be directly assessed and is applicable in many fields. Our results showed that CCA with trace as positive most accurately estimated infection prevalence
