El Herbario: significado, valor y uso.

En la historia de la vida sobre la Tierra, el capítulo que trata sobre el almacenamiento y conservación de las plantas se escribe en los dominios del herbario. El herbario posee los ejemplares que documentan la exploración del hombre sobre la superficie terrestre, de manera que no sólo existe el documento escrito que narra la historia del explorador sino que tenemos el privilegio de tocar esos objetos o especímenes. Así, cada herbario en el mundo posee un tesoro escondido de especímenes históricos que son el fiel testigo de las hazañas de un investigador o de una exploración a algún lugar remoto. En las últimas dos décadas el medio en el que se desarrollan los herbarios y sus colecciones han subrido cambios muy significativos, los que a su vez han ejercido presiones sobre quienes manejan las colecciones. Algunos de estos cambios son la disminución de los aportes económicos a los herbarios, el cambio en el uso de la evidencia morfológica hacia la molecular en los estudios sistemáticos y la pérdida acelerada de la biodiversidad que trae aparejada la necesidad urgente de realizar inventarios florísticos. En una era de extinción de biotas, las colecciones valiosas como son hoy día, serán aún más valiosas en los años por venir. Las colecciones representan el testigo imprescindible para la ciencia y el vehículo para llegar a las posibles soluciones. Es por ello que el conocimiento del significado, valor y uso del herbario y sus colecciones reviste una vital importancia para la ciencia y para la sociedad

The genus Pachylaena (Asteraceae, Mutisieae)

The Andean genus Pachylaena (Asteraceae, Mutisieae) comprises perennial, subrosulate to rosulate herbs, with wide, glaucous and crass leaves, all bilabiate corollas, the marginal ones showy, yellow and/or pink and radiating, and plumose pappus. The genus had traditionally two species: P. atriplicifolia and P. rosea. This study shows that P. rosea should be treated as a synonym of P. atriplicifolia because the two characters of distinction, the colour of the corollas and the morphology of the involucre phyllaries, are shared by both taxa. An overview of the genus Pachylaena and its only species P. atriplicifolia is performed here, which includes descriptions, synonymic lists, illustrations, a distribution map, and ecological aspects.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Takoskyra tarp gretinamosios leksikologijos ir vertimo mokslo

Im vorliegenden Beitrag setzt man sich mit einem der aktuellsten und kontroversesten Probleme der gegenwärtigen kontrastiven Lexikologie auseinander – ihrem Verhältnis zu den benachbarten Zweigen der Sprachwissenschaft: Lexikographie, Semantik, Sprachtypologie, Fremdsprachenunterricht und Übersetzungswissenschaft. Da die Übersetzungswissenschaft in der letzten Zeit immer mehr an Bedeutung und Popularität gewinnt, wird dabei ihr Verhältnis zu kontrastiver Lexikologie erläutert: Es werden die Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen den beiden Disziplinen festgestellt (der Begriff „Kontrastivität“, Äquivalentensuche in den Vergleichssprachen, gemeinsame Fragestellungen und Probleme, ihre angewandte Ausrichtung) sowie die Unterschiede hervorgehoben (unterschiedliche Entstehungsund Entwicklungsgeschichte, der heutige Status), es wird bestimmt, welchen Einfluss sie aufeinander ausüben (kontrastive Lexikologie als Basisdisziplin und Hilfswissenschaft für die Übersetzungswissenschaft) und versucht, auf die Zukunftsperspektiven der kontrastiv lexikologischen Untersuchungen einzugehen (um den Status als eine (relativ) selbständige Wissenschaft erhalten zu können, muss kontrastive Lexikologie ihren Aufgabenkreis erweitern und zu Forschungszwecken unter anderem auch die Korporaanalyse heranziehen).Viena iš daugelio neišspręstų gretinamosios leksikologijos problemų yra jos santykis su kitais mokslais: leksikografija, leksine semantika, kalbų tipologija, užsienio kalbų mokymu, vertimo mokslu ir kt. Typifications in the genus <i>Trichocline</i> (Asteraceae: Mutisieae)

Concerning the genus Trichocline (Asteraceae: Mutisieae), a neotype is designated for the name Bichenia aurea (≡ T. aurea) and lectotypes are designated for the names Onoseris heterophylla (≡ T. heterophylla), T. humilis and T. linearifolia. Nomenclatural and taxonomic information and IUCN conservation status assessments are given for the four species T. aurea, T. heterophylla, T. humilis and T. linearifolia. Inhibitory Effects of Unique Sulfonamides on Leishmania tarentolae and Potential Pathway of Inhibition

Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania. Current treatments for the parasite are limited by cost, availability, and drug resistance as the worldwide occurrence of leishmaniasis continues to be more prevalent. Sulfonamides are a class of compounds with medicinal properties that have been used to treat bacterial and parasitic diseases via various pathways. In this study, newly synthesized, unique structural analogs of sulfonamide compounds were assessed for their impact on Leishmania cell viability and potential pathways for inhibition were evaluated. Leishmania tarentolae (ATCC Strain 30143) axenic promastigote cells were grown in BHI medium and treated with varying concentrations of the unique sulfonamide compounds. Light microscopy and viability tests were used to assess the cells with and without treatment. Recombinant Leishmania major dihydrofolate reductase-thymidylate synthase (DHFR-TS) bifunctional enzyme was expressed in E. coli, extracted, and purified. DNA sequencing at UIUC confirmed the gene was expressed correctly, but the recombinant protein did not exhibit catalytic activity. Future work should include evaluation of the inhibitory effects of the sulfonamides on the recombinant DHFR-TS. The conclusions of this work will help determine potential applications for tested sulfonamides improving future medicinal therapies for this disease
