Once Upon the Bench: Rule Under the Fairy Tale
The idea that the fairy tale is worthy of study by legal scholars may seem uncomfortable to many. Even the strongest supporters of the law and literature movement may be given pause by this contention. It may be one thing for Kafka to give lessons in law, but the Brothers Grimm? After all, it was not until relatively recently that the fairy tale was even accepted as a legitimate subject of study by literature departments, and it is still disdained by many in the university. How could the childish world of fantasy stories have anything to do with the sophisticated study of law? This Note seeks to answer this question by investigating the unexplored relationship between the fairy-tale genre and law

Gender Equality, Drinking Cultures and Second-Hand Harms from Alcohol in the 50 US States.
BackgroundGender inequality and cultures of binge drinking may increase the risk of second-hand harms from alcohol.MethodsUsing the 2014-2015 National Alcohol Survey and 2015 National Alcohol's Harm to Others Survey (N = 7792), we examine associations of state-level gender equality measures (contraceptive access, abortion rights, women's economic equality) and binge drinking cultures (rates of men's and women's binge drinking) with individual-level indicators of second-hand harms by drinking strangers and partners/spouses.ResultsIn main effects models, only male binge drinking was associated with greater odds of harms from drinking strangers. There were significant interactions of gender equality with male binge drinking: High male binge drinking rates were more strongly associated with stranger-perpetrated harms in states low on contraceptive access or abortion rights compared to states high on these measures. Conversely, male binge drinking was more strongly associated with spouse/partner-perpetrated second-hand harms in states with more economic equality, compared to states lower on this measure.ConclusionsDetrimental effects of high male binge drinking rates may be modified by gender equality. Targeted interventions may reduce alcohol-related harms experienced by women in states with high rates of male binge drinking. Restrictions in access to contraception and abortion may exacerbate harms due to men's drinking
The effects of obesity with pregnancy termination: a literature review
Obesity has become a major health problem in the United States as well as globally which may affect the safety of pregnancy termination. Thus, a literature review was conducted to determine the available evidence regarding the effects of obesity with pregnancy termination to assist with patient care and counseling. The available evidence is limited by small numbers and descriptive study design. While pregnancy termination upon obese women may impart additional technical challenges, experienced providers complete procedures upon obese women without statistically significant differences in procedure or patient outcomes compared to normal weight women for first trimester gestations. Pharmacological abortion may be a more practical option in some very obese women
NGC 4138 - A Case Study in Counterrotating Disk Formation
The Sa(r) galaxy NGC 4138 has been recently found to contain an extensive
counterrotating disk which appears to be still forming. Up to a third of the
stars in the disk system may be on retrograde orbits. A counterrotating ring of
H II regions, along with extended counterrotating H I gas, suggests that the
retrograde material has been recently acquired in the gas phase and is still
trickling in. Using numerical simulations, we have attempted to model the
process by which the counterrotating mass has been accreted by this galaxy. We
investigate two possibilities: continuous retrograde infall of gas, and a
retrograde merger with a gas-rich dwarf galaxy. Both processes are successful
in producing a counterrotating disk of the observed mass and dimensions without
heating up the primary significantly. Contrary to our experience with a
fiducial cold, thin primary disk, the gas-rich merger works well for the
massive, compact primary disk of NGC 4138 even though the mass of the dwarf
galaxy is a significant fraction of the mass of the primary disk. Although we
have restricted ourselves mainly to coplanar infall and mergers, we report on
one inclined infall simulation as well. We also explore the possibility that
the H-alpha ring seen in the inner half of the disk is a consequence of
counterrotating gas clouds colliding with corotating gas already present in the

Personality Measurement and Assessment in Large Panel Surveys
Personality tests are being added to large panel studies with increasing regularity, such as the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). To facilitate the inclusion and interpretation of these tests, we provide some general background on personality psychology, personality assessment, and the validity of personality tests. In this review, we provide background on definitions of personality, the strengths and weaknesses of the self-report approaches to personality testing typically used in large panel studies, and the validity of personality tests for three outcomes: genetics, income, and health. We conclude with recommendations on how to improve personality assessment in future panel studies
College Student Perceptions on Campus Alcohol Policies and Consumption Patterns
Environmental strategies for colleges and universities to reduce alcohol consumption among their students include the development and enforcement of campus alcohol policies. This study examines students\u27 knowledge and attitudes toward campus alcohol policies and how they relate to alcohol consumption and alcohol social norms. A sample of 422 freshman students was surveyed during their first month at a 4-year public college. Findings indicated that the majority of students (89%) were aware of campus policies, yet of those who were aware, less than half (44%) were accepting of these campus rules and regulations. In addition, the majority (79%) of students drank at social events, despite this behavior is in direct violation of campus alcohol policies. However, those who supported campus rules consumed significantly less alcohol at social events than those who opposed or had no opinion of the rules. Also, those who supported the rules perceived that their peers and students, in general, consumed significantly less alcohol at social events than those who were opposed or had no opinion. This outcome supports the premise established by several theories of behavior change including the theory of planned behavior, which states that behavior is influenced less by knowledge than by attitude and intention
BCCNet: Bayesian classifier combination neural network
Machine learning research for developing countries can demonstrate clear
sustainable impact by delivering actionable and timely information to
in-country government organisations (GOs) and NGOs in response to their
critical information requirements. We co-create products with UK and in-country
commercial, GO and NGO partners to ensure the machine learning algorithms
address appropriate user needs whether for tactical decision making or
evidence-based policy decisions. In one particular case, we developed and
deployed a novel algorithm, BCCNet, to quickly process large quantities of
unstructured data to prevent and respond to natural disasters. Crowdsourcing
provides an efficient mechanism to generate labels from unstructured data to
prime machine learning algorithms for large scale data analysis. However, these
labels are often imperfect with qualities varying among different citizen
scientists, which prohibits their direct use with many state-of-the-art machine
learning techniques. We describe BCCNet, a framework that simultaneously
aggregates biased and contradictory labels from the crowd and trains an
automatic classifier to process new data. Our case studies, mosquito sound
detection for malaria prevention and damage detection for disaster response,
show the efficacy of our method in the challenging context of developing world

Effects of lipid kinase expression and cellular stimuli on phosphatidylinositol 5-phosphate levels in mammalian cell lines
AbstractPhosphatidylinositol 5-phosphate (PtdIns5P) is a relatively recently discovered inositol lipid whose metabolism and functions are not yet clearly understood. We have transfected cells with a number of enzymes that are potentially implicated in the synthesis or metabolism of PtdIns5P, or subjected cells to a variety of stimuli, and then measured cellular PtdIns5P levels by a specific mass assay. Stable or transient overexpression of Type IIα PtdInsP kinase, or transient overexpression of Type Iα or IIβ PtdInsP kinases caused no significant change in cellular PtdIns5P levels. Similarly, subjecting cells to oxidative stress or EGF stimulation had no significant effect on PtdIns5P, but stimulation of HeLa cells with a phosphoinositide-specific PLC-coupled agonist, histamine, caused a 40% decrease within 1min. Our data question the degree to which inositide kinases regulate PtdIns5P levels in cells, and we discuss the possibility that a significant part of both the synthesis and removal of this lipid may be regulated by phosphatases and possibly phospholipases
