Herschel Observations and Updated Spectral Energy Distributions of Five Sunlike Stars with Debris Disks
Observations from the Herschel Space Observatory have more than doubled the
number of wide debris disks orbiting Sunlike stars to include over 30 systems
with R > 100 AU. Here we present new Herschel PACS and re-analyzed Spitzer MIPS
photometry of five Sunlike stars with wide debris disks, from Kuiper belt size
to R > 150 AU. The disk surrounding HD 105211 is well resolved, with an angular
extent of >14" along the major axis, and the disks of HD 33636, HD 50554, and
HD 52265 are extended beyond the PACS PSF size (50% of energy enclosed within
radius 4.23"). HD 105211 also has a 24-micron infrared excess that was
previously overlooked because of a poorly constrained photospheric model.
Archival Spitzer IRS observations indicate that the disks have small grains of
minimum radius ~3 microns, though the minimum grain gradius is larger than the
radiation pressure blowout size in all systems. If modeled as
single-temperature blackbodies, the disk temperatures would all be <60 K. Our
radiative transfer models predict actual disk radii approximately twice the
radius of model blackbody disks. We find that the Herschel photometry traces
dust near the source population of planetesimals. The disk luminosities are in
the range 0.00002 <= L/L* <= 0.0002, consistent with collisions in icy
planetesimal belts stirred by Pluto-size dwarf planets.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 18 pages, including 10 figures and 3

Epistemic prejudice and geographies of innovation
This article seeks to understand how and why certain locations are excluded from or seen as foreclosed as places of innovation and knowledge production in health research and practice. Rooted in several years of collaborative ethnographic research in Mississippi, we develop this conceptual framework to understand the persistence of â and often ineffective response to â racialized and classed health disparities. We define our concept of epistemic prejudice as a structural inability or resistance to seeing certain places, bodies, and locations as capable of knowledge production and innovation. The history of the community health center movement, paired with the portrayal of Mississippi in contemporary media representations, helps us develop our concept. We use an interface ethnography method as Mississippi scholars to demonstrate the importance of this model of research in understanding persistent inequality in places of âlackâ, noting that the challenges of addressing health problems in Mississippi stem in part from epistemic prejudice of scholars, health care practitioners, and policy-makers. Epistemic prejudice has broader implications for how global health initiatives are implemented, how postcolonial frameworks still shape knowledge production, and how knowledge is generated and taken as authoritative
Pathological features and clinical behavior of Lynch syndrome-associated ovarian cancer
OBJECTIVE: Lynch syndrome (LS) is an inherited tumor predisposition condition caused by mutations in the mismatch repair (MMR) genes. Mutation carriers are at increased risk of various malignancies, including ovarian cancer (OC). Relatively little is known about the pathological features and clinical behavior of LS associated OC. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 1047 proven MMR mutated individuals from a prospectively maintained database at a large referral center for genomic medicine in the North West of England. Data were crosschecked with pathology reports, the National Cancer Registry and death certificates, where appropriate. Data from gynecological surveillance and risk reducing surgery were analyzed. RESULTS: We identified 53 cases of LSAOC in proven MMR mutated individuals. The cumulative risk of LSAOC was 20% at age 80 in those who retained their ovaries. LSAOC presented at an earlier age (average 51, range 24â70 years) than sporadic OC. The predominant histological subtype was endometrioid adenocarcinoma (53%). Most cases presented early (85% at stage I/II vs. 15% at stage III/IV, p < 0.001) and overall survival was excellent (80% 5-year survival), however, patients with advanced disease had a poor prognosis (40% 5-year survival). Most women were found to have LS after their OC diagnosis, however, two were detected at Stage 1c through gynecological surveillance and a further three were detected following surgery for screen-detected synchronous endometrial pathology. CONCLUSION: The predominance of early stage disease in LSAOC is linked to its good prognosis. We support risk-reducing surgery for women whose families are complete especially if undertaking hysterectomy for endometrial risk, and ovarian surveillance as part of gynecological screening for those who have not
Attention Allocation Aid for Visual Search
This paper outlines the development and testing of a novel, feedback-enabled
attention allocation aid (AAAD), which uses real-time physiological data to
improve human performance in a realistic sequential visual search task. Indeed,
by optimizing over search duration, the aid improves efficiency, while
preserving decision accuracy, as the operator identifies and classifies targets
within simulated aerial imagery. Specifically, using experimental eye-tracking
data and measurements about target detectability across the human visual field,
we develop functional models of detection accuracy as a function of search
time, number of eye movements, scan path, and image clutter. These models are
then used by the AAAD in conjunction with real time eye position data to make
probabilistic estimations of attained search accuracy and to recommend that the
observer either move on to the next image or continue exploring the present
image. An experimental evaluation in a scenario motivated from human
supervisory control in surveillance missions confirms the benefits of the AAAD.Comment: To be presented at the ACM CHI conference in Denver, Colorado in May

The Carina Nebula and Gum 31 molecular complex: II. The distribution of the atomic gas revealed in unprecedented detail
We report high spatial resolution observations of the HI 21cm line in the
Carina Nebula and the Gum 31 region obtained with the Australia Telescope
Compact Array. The observations covered 12 deg centred on , achieving an angular resolution of 35
arcseconds. The HI map revealed complex filamentary structures across a wide
range of velocities. Several "bubbles" are clearly identified in the Carina
Nebula Complex, produced by the impact of the massive star clusters located in
this region. An HI absorption profile obtained towards the strong extragalactic
radio source PMN J1032--5917 showed the distribution of the cold component of
the atomic gas along the Galactic disk, with the Sagittarius-Carina and Perseus
spiral arms clearly distinguishable. Preliminary calculations of the optical
depth and spin temperatures of the cold atomic gas show that the HI line is
opaque ( 2) at several velocities in the Sagittarius-Carina
spiral arm. The spin temperature is K in the regions with the highest
optical depth, although this value might be lower for the saturated components.
The atomic mass budget of Gum 31 is of the total gas mass. HI self
absorption features have molecular counterparts and good spatial correlation
with the regions of cold dust as traced by the infrared maps. We suggest that
in Gum 31 regions of cold temperature and high density are where the atomic to

'My expectations remain the same. The student has to be competent to practise' : practice assessor perspectives on the new social work degree qualification in England
Research has emphasized the importance of practice learning to social work qualifying education but has tended to feature social work educator and student perspectives more strongly than the views of those responsible for assessing students' practice in the field. This article draws on 195 responses to a postal questionnaire sent at two points in time to practice assessors working with students from nine social work qualifying programmes run in six higher education institutions collected as part of the evaluation of the new social work degree qualification in England. While practice assessors described changes in their role and in the opportunities available to students, they also emphasized continuities, particularly in the skills that they expected students to possess. The key difficulty they identified was the heavy workload resulting from combining their role as practice assessors with their other responsibilities at work. Increases in the number of social work students and changes to the organization of services are likely to create further pressures on practice assessors. Given that these issues are faced by a number of different professions, the article concludes that there is potential for future studies to look at the experiences of practice educators across different professional qualifying programmes
Measuring cancer care experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia: Trial of a new approach that privileges patient voices
This study examined a new method for measuring the care experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with cancer: the Indigenous Peopleâs Experiences of Cancer Care Survey (IPECCS). The study assessed IPECCSâs: 1) performance; 2) ability to elicit information useful for service improvements; and 3) implementation potential. Three participant groups were recruited from five Australian cancer treatment sites: 1) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with cancer (+/- support person); 2) interviewers; and 3) health services staff. Trained interviewers administered IPECCS to participants with cancer in audiotaped sessions. Paper forms and transcripts were compared to assess performance, and problems/potential solutions reported by participants with cancer were assessed for actionability. All participant groups completed separate interviews regarding IPECCS. Selected implementation measures were assessed based on interviews and IPECCS administration. Participants (n=31) included 11 Aboriginal people with cancer, 7 support people, 4 interviewers, and 9 health staff. Aboriginal people with cancer spoke at length about their cancer care experiences and identified problems and potential solutions that could be acted upon by health services. Although some parts of the IPECCS form were well-completed, recording was inconsistent and inadequate. Aboriginal people with cancer and interviewers predominantly supported the IPECCS process; while most health staff supported the aims, they questioned its feasibility. Capturing domains of patient experience relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people requires a culturally safe, strengths-based approach. The tension between facilitating meaningful patient engagement and maximizing the efficiency of data collection and use must be resolved to realise the benefits of such an approach.

Implications of the prevalence and magnitude of sustained declines for determining a minimum threshold for favourable population size.
We propose a new approach to quantifying a minimum threshold value for the size of an animal population, below which that population might be categorised as having unfavourable status. Under European Union law, the concept of Favourable Conservation Status requires assessment of populations as having favourable or unfavourable status, but quantitative methods for such assessments have not yet been developed. One population threshold that is well established in conservation biology is the minimum viable population (MVP) defined as the size of a small but stable population with an acceptably low risk of extinction within a specified period. Our approach combines this small-population paradigm MVP concept with a multiplier, which is a factor by which the MVP is multiplied to allow for the risk of a sustained future decline. We demonstrate this approach using data on UK breeding bird population sizes. We used 43-year time-series data for 189 species and a qualitative assessment of population trends over almost 200 years for 229 species to examine the prevalence, duration and magnitude of sustained population declines. Our study addressed the problem of underestimation of the duration and magnitude of declines caused by short runs of monitoring data by allowing for the truncation of time series. The multiplier was derived from probability distributions of decline magnitudes within a given period, adjusted for truncation. Over a surveillance period of 100 years, we estimated that there was a 10% risk across species that a sustained population decline of at least sixteen-fold would begin. We therefore suggest that, in this case, a factor of 16 could be used as the multiplier of small-population MVPs to obtain minimum threshold population sizes for favourable status. We propose this 'MVP Multiplier' method as a new and robust approach to obtaining minimum threshold population sizes which integrates the concepts of small-population and declining-population paradigms. The minimum threshold value we propose is intended for use alongside a range of other measures to enable overall assessments of favourable conservation status
