    Pseudolikelihood inference for Gibbsian T-tessellations ... and point processes

    Recently a new class of planar tessellations, named T-tessellations, was introduced. Splits, merges and a third local modification named flip where shown to be sufficient for exploring the space of T-tessellations. Based on these local transformations and by analogy with point process theory, tools Campbell measures and a general simulation algorithm of Metropolis-Hastings-Green type were translated for random T-tessellations.The current report is concerned with parametric inference for Gibbs models of T-tessellations. The estimation criterion referred to as the pseudolikelihood is derived from Campbell measures of random T-tessellations and the Kullback-Leibler divergence. A detailed algorithm for approximating the pseudolikelihood maximum is provided. A simulation study seems to show that bias and variability of the pseudolikelihood maximum decrease when the tessellated domain grows in size.In the last part of the report, it is shown that an analogous approach based on the Campbell measure and the KL divergence when applied to point processes leads to the well-known pseudo-likelihood introduced by Besag. More surprisingly, the binomial regression method recently proposed by Baddeley and his co-authors for computing the pseudolikelihood maximum can be derived using the same approach starting from a slight modification of the Campbell measure

    Barotrauma of the paranasal sinuses is a trauma caused by a large difference in air pressure between the sinuses and the environment. It concerns essentially divers, aviators, as well as paratroopers. A characteristic symptom is sudden and piercing pain in the sinus area. The pain begins while the ambient's pressure is changing or an instant later. The result of a pressure injury may be an epistaxis. Sinusitis may be also an effect of sinuses' mucosal damage. Drugs used primarily in patients with pressure-related injury are vasoconstructive medicaments and analgesics. Antibiotics are also applied in some situations. Because the incidence of barotrauma increases in predisposed people, e.g. with anatomical abnormalities, nose surgery, including correction of the nasal septum or paranasal sinuses, i.e. conchotomy, is used to prevent injury

    Adult Attachment and Relationship Status (Single vs. Partnered) in Polish Young Adults

    This study examined links between adult attachment and relationship status (single vs. partnered) in Polish young adults. Three hundred and seventeen participants (173 females and 144 males) aged 22-27 years old (M = 24.69, SD = 1.87), completed the Polish-language version of the Revised Adult Attachment Scale (RAAS) used to measure adult attachment. All the respondents were heterosexual, unmarried and had no children. One hundred and fifty seven (49.50%) students declared being in a romantic relationship at the time of the assessment whilst 160 students (50.50%) were not. Results indicated that single participants reported higher levels of worry about being rejected or unloved (Anxiety dimension) and lower levels of comfort with closeness (Close dimension), and comfort with depending on others (Depend dimension). In terms of attachment categories, analyses indicated that higher proportions of single participants were categorized into fearful and preoccupied attachment styles and a lower proportion of them were categorized into the secure attachment style compared to partnered individuals. Discriminant analysis revealed that worry of being rejected or unloved (Anxiety dimension) was the strongest factor discriminating between single and partnered relationship status: the higher the anxiety dimension scores, the higher chances of being single. No gender differences were obtained on attachment dimensions and styles.</p

    Estimation of the height of the first interaction in gamma-ray showers observed by Cherenkov telescopes

    Very high energy gamma rays entering the atmosphere initiate Extensive Air Showers (EAS). The Cherenkov light induced by an EAS can be observed by ground-based telescopes to study the primary gamma rays. An important parameter of an EAS, determining its evolution, is the height of the first interaction of the primary particle. However, this variable cannot be directly measured by Cherenkov telescopes. We study two simple, independent methods for the estimation of the first interaction height. We test the methods using the Monte Carlo simulations for the 4 Large Size Telescopes (LST) that are part of the currently constructed Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Observatory. We find that using such an estimated parameter in the gamma/hadron separation can bring a mild improvement (~10-20%) in the sensitivity in the energy range ~30-200 GeV.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic

    Urban-rural differences in social capital in relation to self-rated health and subjective wellbeing in older residents of six regions in Poland

    The aim of the study was to assess the differences between rural and urban areas as regards the role of social capital and its effect on self-rated health and subjective well-being among older people in Poland. The sample was selected on the basis of multi-stage clustered design from the non-institutionalized adult population. Analysis was based on 1,299 elderly people aged 65 and over from the general Polish population who participated in the COURAGE in Europe project. Six regions of Poland were distinguished according to first level of Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics (NUTS) classification. As an indicator of social capital, the COURAGE Social Network Index, the OSLO-3 Social Support Scale, and the three item UCLA Loneliness scale were used, as well as social participation and trust was assessed. Self-rated health (SRH) was measured by WHO-Europe recommended version (ranging from ‘very good’ to ‘very bad’). Well-being was assessed by the Day Reconstruction Method. Results: The results showed that in urban areas, social network and social participation supported positive self-rated health; in rural, older residents the number of years of education and social support played the same role, while self-rated health decreased with an increasing level of loneliness. Self-rated health decreased in both groups of older people with a growing number of diseases. The multivariate linear regression model of predictors of well-being in older age also confirmed differences between urban and rural elderly residents. In rural residents, subjective well-being significantly increased with the positive effect of the social network. In both urban and rural areas, poor assessment of subjective well-being in older age increased with a higher level of loneliness and growing number of chronic diseases

    Studies of the nature of the low-energy, gamma-like background for Cherenkov Telescope Array

    The upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project is expected to provide unprecedented sensitivity in the low-energy ( <~100 GeV) range for Cherenkov telescopes. In order to exploit fully the potential of the telescopes the standard analysis methods for gamma/hadron separation might need to be revised. We study the composition of the background by identifying events composed mostly of a single electromagnetic subcascade or double subcascade from a {\pi}0 (or another neutral meson) decay. We apply the standard simulation and analysis chain of CTA to evaluate the potential of the standard analysis to reject such events.Comment: All CTA contributions at arXiv:1709.03483.
