    Laugier-Hunziker Syndrome: A Case Report

    Laugier-Hunziker syndrome (LHS) is a rare, acquired mucocutaneous hyperpigmentation often associated with longitudinal melanonychia. It is important to differentiate this condition from the pigmentary disorders of the oral mucosa. The correct clinical identification avoids the need for invasive investigations. A 32-year-old female presented with a number of variably sized, hyperpigmented macules over the oral mucosa and longitudinal melanonychia. Herein, we report a case of LHS and discuss the conditions related with pigmented mucocutaneous lesions

    Primjena metode konačnih elemenata za modeliranje drvno-plastičnih kompozita ojačanih vlaknima za uporabu u konstrukciji namještaja s polukrutim vezovi

    In this study, control samples of pine (Pinus slyvestris L.), beech (Fagus orientalis L.) and oak (Quercus petreae L.) species were obtained by using fi ber reinforced finger corner joints. Teknobont 200 epoxy and polyvinyl (PVAc) adhesives were used as glue. Bearing in mind the critical loads that may affect their use, experimental samples were tested under diagonal loads. Experimental samples were also analyzed by a computer program using the finite element method (FEM). Finally, experimental data were compared with the results of FEM. The comparisons clearly showed that experimental results and finite element solutions (SAP2000 V17) including semi-rigid connections are in good agreement. As a structural analysis program in furniture engineering designs, FEM can be preferred in terms of reliability and cost.U radu se prikazuju rezultati istraživanja uzoraka borovine (Pinus slyvestris L.), bukovine (Fagus orientalis L.) i hrastovine (Quercus petreae L.) spojenih kutnim zupčastim spojevima i ojačanih vlaknima. Kao ljepilo upotrijebljeno je epoksidno ljepilo Teknobont 200 i polivinilacetatno ljepilo (PVAc). Imajući na umu opterećenja koja se pojavljuju tijekom uporabe, eksperimentalni su uzorci ispitivani pri dijagonalnim opterećenjima. Uzorci su također analizirani računalnim programom primjenom metode konačnih elemenata (FEM). Eksperimentalni podatci i podatci dobiveni FEM analizom uspoređeni su te se jasno može vidjeti da se ti podatci za polukrute vezove podudaraju. Glede pouzdanosti i troškova, kao strukturnom programu analize u dizajniranju namještaja prednost se može dati FEM analizi

    Elastic foundation effects on arch dams

    Earthquake response of an arch dam should be calculated under ground motion effects. This study presents three-dimensional linear earthquake response of an arch dam. Thereby, we considered different ground motion effects and also foundation conditions in the finite element analyses. For this purpose, the Type 3 double curvature arch dam was selected for application. All numerical analyses are carried out by SAP2000 program for empty reservoir cases. In the scope of this study, linear modal time-history analyses are performed using three dimensional finite element model of the arch dam and arch dam-foundation interaction systems. According to numerical analyses, maximum horizontal displacements and maximum normal stresses are presented by dam height in the largest section. These results are evaluated for rigid and various elastic foundation conditions. Furthermore, near-fault and far-field ground motion effects on the selected arch dam are taken into account by different accelerograms obtained from the Loma Prieta earthquake at various distances

    Kanser hastalarında palyatif bakım ve fitoterapi

    Cancer is defined as a complex disease that occurs with the uncontrolled proliferation of cells and develops under the influence of genetic and environmental conditions. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are frequently used in cancer treatment. Side effects related to these treatments are observed in most of the patients. Palliative care, which is an important part of cancer management today, aims to alleviate the symptoms and side effects of these treatments and to increase the quality of life of the patient. A growing number of patients with cancer are inclined towards complementary and integrative medicine, including herbal medicine. The interest in this field is increasing because it has been shown by preclinical and clinical studies that some phytotherapeutic products can reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This review summarizes phytotherapeutic approaches supported by clinical studies for palliative care in cancer patients.Kanser, hücrelerin kontrolsüz çoğalması ile ortaya çıkan, genetik ve çevresel koşulların etkisi altında gelişen kompleks bir hastalık olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Kemoterapi ve radyoterapi kanser tedavisinde sıklıkla kullanılmakta ve hastaların çoğunda buna bağlı yan etkiler gözlenmektedir. Günümüzde kanser yönetiminin önemli bir parçası olan palyatif bakım da bu tedavilerde ortaya çıkan semptomların ve yan etkilerin hafifletilmesini sağlayıp hastanın yaşam kalitesini artırmayı hedeflemektedir. Giderek artan sayıdaki kanser hastası, bitkisel ilaçlar da dahil olmak üzere tamamlayıcı ve entegratif tıbba yönelmiş durumdadır. Bazı fitoterapötik ürünlerin kemoterapi ve radyoterapiye bağlı yan etkileri azaltabildiğinin preklinik ve klinik çalışmalarda gösterilmesi sebebiyle bu alana olan ilgi artmaktadır.     Analiza kompozita od kopolimera stirena i anhidrida maleinske kiseline (SMA) punjenih pregrijanim drvom metodom konačnih elemenata

    The computer aided three dimensional static analyses of the specimens was done by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and obtained data was compared with actual test data. The aim of this study is to compare the deformation/stress analyses with FEM analysis results of styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer composites. The heat treated wood/SMA copolymer composites were produced from different loadings (from 10 to 30 wt. %) of heat treated and untreated eastern white pine wood flours (Pinus strobus L.). All formulations of wood flour/SMA copolymer composites were produced by melt compounding through injection molding. The deformation/stress results obtained from the experimental solutions are very close to the results obtained from the numerical solutions (SAP2000 V17). As a result, it can be said that it is beneficial to use the FEM in the engineering design approach after the data obtained by the experimental solutions as meaningful values after application of the FEM.Računalom potpomognuta trodimenzionalna statička analiza uzoraka provedena je metodom konačnih elemenata (FEM). Dobiveni su podatci uspoređeni sa stvarnim ispitnim podatcima. Cilj rada bio je usporediti analizu deformacija/naprezanja s rezultatima FEM analize kompozita od kopolimera stirena i anhidrida maleinske kiseline (SMA). Kompoziti od pregrijanog drva i SMA kopolimera bili su izrađeni s različitim udjelom (od 10 do 30 % težine) drvnog brašna od pregrijanoga i nepregrijanog drva američkog borovca (Pinus strobus L.). Sve formulacije kompozita od drvnog brašna i SMA kopolimera bile su izrađene injekcijskim prešanjem. Rezultati deformacija i naprezanja dobiveni eksperimentalno vrlo su slični rezultatima dobivenim računskim putem (SAP200 V17). Može se zaključiti da je analiza metodom konačnih elementa, kombinirana s eksperimentalno dobivenim podatcima, korisna u inženjerskom projektiranju

    Dermatitis herpetiformis is an autoimmune skin disease, which is strongly related to coeliac disease. Moreover, some authors accept it as the skin manifestation of coeliac disease. It is a chronic, recurrent disease with polymorphic skin eruptions and pruritus. Dermatitis herpetiformis is a disease of the young adults mostly, but can be seen at any age. It is characterized by papules, vesicles, excoriations, and urticarial plaques clinically. Histopathological examination reveals subepidermal separation, and with this finding, it needs to be differentiated from linear IgA bullous dermatitis and bullous pemphigoid. In this case, direct immunofluorescence is helpful. Granular deposition of IgA is pathognomonic for dermatitis herpetiformis. Dermatitis herpetiformis can accompany other autoimmune disorders such as type I diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, vitiligo, and collagen tissue diseases. Dermatitis herpetiformis is, usually, successfully treated with dapsone and gluten-free diet

    The Impacts of Foreign Portfolio Flows and Monetary Policy Responses on Stock Markets by Considering COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence from Turkey

    Abstract This study researches the impacts of foreign portfolio flows (proxied by foreign investors' retention share) and monetary policy responses (proxied by the repurchase interest rate) on Turkey's stock market index taking the COVID-19 pandemic into consideration. A volatility index, credit default swap spreads, and foreign exchange rates are used as control variables, with a daily dataset between January 2, 2017, and October 20, 2020. After examining the stationarity and nonlinearity characteristics of the variables, we applied a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model and then conducted a Markov switching regression (MSR) for a robustness check. The results reveal that both foreign portfolio flows and monetary responses have an important effect on the index, and foreign portfolio flows have a higher effect than monetary responses. Accordingly, the results obtained from the NARDL and MSR models are robust and consistent

    Designing Genes that Encode Proteins for Biomedical Applications

    DNA is a crucial component of all known life. It encodes in genes the structure of the proteins necessary to perform many of the functions in a cell. Proteins are biological polymers consisting of a chain of amino acids. The specific sequence of the amino acids determines the structure and therefore function of the protein. The sequence of the amino acids of a protein is coded in DNA via triplets of the nucleotide bases known as codons, which each can represent only one amino acid. However, an amino acid can be represented by more than one codon, so there are many combinations of DNA that can code for any given protein. The efficiency of expressing a protein from a gene can be affected by the DNA sequence, so to optimize protein production, we want an optimal sequence of DNA. Particularly, we would like to be able to design ab initio, optimized genes that code for protein-based materials for biological applications. We are working to develop a computer program to generate DNA code from an amino acid sequence.
