    The Szigliget maar/diatreme, Bakony- Balaton Highland Volcanic Field (Hungary)

    A preliminary volcanological mapping has been carried out in the western part of the Bakony- Balaton Highland Volcanic Field (BBHVF) around Szigliget (Hungary) village. Pyroclastic rocks have been found building up the three distinct hillsides in the area. The pyroclastic rock beds in each hillside show similar north-westward dip direction and similar textural and compositional characteristics, suggestive of a complex but closely related volcanic system in the area. The pyroclastic deposits have been grouped into three units according to their textural, compositional and stratigraphic characteristics. Unit 1 which represents the lowermost stratigraphic position crops out in the southern side of the study area. It consists of coarse-grained, matrix-supported massive to weakly bedded, accidental lithic clast-rich, block-bearing lapilli tuffs / tuff breccias, extremely rich in deep-seated accidental lithic and peridotite lherzolite clasts. Unit 2 which represents an intermediate stratigraphic position crops out in the southern and north-east hilltops. It consists of coarse-grained accidental lithic clast-rich, normal graded, bedded, vitric lapilli tuffs / tuff beds. Deep-seated accidental lithic clasts are common, but large peridotite lherzolite fragments are relatively rare. Unit 3 which represents the highest stratigraphic position in the area crops out in the northwestern side. It consists of fine-to-coarse grained, bedded, accidental lithic clast-rich vitric lapilli tuff / tuff beds. Deep-seated lithic clasts as well as peridotite lherzolite fragments are rare. Accidental lithic clasts, derived from shallow prevolcanic strata (Neogene sediments), have a dominant proportion of pyroclastic rocks in this unit. In each unit the volcanic glasses are angular, non- to highly vesiculated tephrite to phono-tephrite shards. The presence of sideromelane glass shards and the large amount of accidental lithic clasts in beds from each units indicate subsurface phreatomagmatic explosive processes during formation of pyroclastic rocks at Szigliget. The pyroclastic rocks are interpreted as part of a former crater rim deposits around maar basin which subsequently subsided inward into a vent. Unit 1 is interpreted to be a lower diatreme deposit and Unit 2 and Unit 3 a series of near-vent pyroclastic density currents and fallout tephra

    The impact of electric currents on Majorana dark matter at freeze out

    Thermal relics with masses in the GeV to TeV range remain possible candidates for the Universe's dark matter (DM). These neutral particles are often assumed to have vanishing electric and magnetic dipole moments so that they do not interact with single real photons, but the anapole moment can still be nonzero, permitting interactions with single virtual photons. This anapole moment allows for p-wave annihilation of DM into standard model particles, and the DM interacts with external electric currents via the anapole moment. Moving beyond their static electromagnetic properties, these particles generically have non-zero polarizabilities which mediate interactions with two real photons; in particular, spin-dependent polarizibilities admit s-wave annihilation of the DM into two photons. When the Universe cools from a temperature on the order of the DM mass to freeze out, the DM is in thermal equilibrium with the background plasma of particles, but the comoving DM density decreases due to annihilation. If a collection of initially unpolarized DM particles were subjected to an electric current, then the DM medium would become partially polarized, according to the Boltzmann distribution, with a slight excess of anapole moments aligned with the current, relative to those anti-aligned. For this region of partially polarized DM particles, the s-wave annihilation mode becomes partially suppressed because it requires a state of vanishing angular momentum. As a consequence, the decreased DM annihilation rate in this region will result in an excess of DM density, relative to an unpolarized region, as DM drops out of thermal equilibrium.     Anthropogenic contributions to Australia's record summer temperatures of 2013

    Anthropogenic contributions to the record hot 2013 Australian summer are investigated using a suite of climate model experiments. This was the hottest Australian summer in the observational record. Australian area-average summer temperatures for simulations with natural forcings only were compared to simulations with anthropogenic and natural forcings for the period 1976-2005 and the RCP8.5 high emission simulation (2006-2020) from nine Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 models. Using fraction of attributable risk to compare the likelihood of extreme Australian summer temperatures between the experiments, it was very likely (>90% confidence) there was at least a 2.5 times increase in the odds of extreme heat due to human influences using simulations to 2005, and a fivefold increase in this risk using simulations for 2006-2020. The human contribution to the increased odds of Australian summer extremes like 2013 was substantial, while natural climate variations alone, including El Niño Southern Oscillation, are unlikely to explain the record temperature. © 2013. The etiology of schizophrenia is unknown, but appears to be multifaceted, with genetic and epigenetic developmental factors all implicated.     A Majorana fermion is a particle which is its own antiparticle. As a consequence, their electromagnetic interactions are minimal. Because of this, they are a good candidate for dark matter with their sole static electromagnetic property being their anapole moment. The annihilation rate of Majorana fermions depends on whether their anapole moments are aligned (polarized) or anti-aligned (unpolarized). It is therefore important to understand how Majorana fermions polarize to better understand their annihilation rates. This can help us further understand and detect dark matter.     Solar UV Forecasts: A Randomized Trial Assessing Their Impact on Adults' Sun-Protection Behavior

    This study examined the effectiveness of solar UV forecasts and supporting communications in assisting adults to protect themselves from excessive weekend sun exposure. The study was conducted in Australia, where 557 adult participants with workplace e-mail and Internet access were randomly allocated to one of three weather forecast conditions: standard forecast (no UV), standard forecast + UV, standard forecast + UV + sun-protection messages. From late spring through summer and early autumn, they were e-mailed weekend weather forecasts late in the working week. Each Monday they were e-mailed a prompt to complete a Web-based questionnaire to report sun-related behavior and any sunburn experienced during the previous weekend. There were no significant differences between weather forecast conditions in reported hat use, sunscreen use, sun avoidance, or sunburn. Results indicate that provision of solar-UV forecasts in weather forecasts did not promote markedly enhanced personal sun-protection practices among the adults surveyed.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
