What good is it anyway? Professional dance artists legitimising their work for the Cultural Schoolbag in Norwegian schools

This article examines how dance artists with extensive experience with The Cultural Schoolbag (TCS), a national programme for bringing the arts into schools, convey their rationale for working in TCS. Previous research has found that the artists’ rationale for doing TCS-art is far from established and agreeing on what TCS-art should be or become is inherently difficult. The goal that TCS-art should contribute to the school’s curriculum, potentially challenging the artists’ freedom, continues to pose a challenge to TCS that has so far remained unresolved. Interviews with nine professional dancers show, that they to a little degree have been challenged to contribute to the school’s curriculum and have had few problems establishing a rationale for doing TCS-art in line with being or becoming a professional dancer. Even if this rationale has been adapted to the socio-material conditions of performing TCS-art, it is seemingly within what can be accepted in the art world of dance in Norway.publishedVersio

Aligning participation with authorship: independent transmedia documentary production in Norway

Incentives to develop non-fiction transmedia projects have recently challenged the work practices of independent documentary filmmakers in Norway. However, research on documentary films has only minimally captured the emerging practice of making non-fiction transmedia. Based on an interview study undertaken in 2012/2013 and reflections on contributing to a recent non-fiction transmedia project, I find that the emerging practice faces many of the same challenges as the participative documentary practice of the 1970s, mainly that the facilitation of audience participation requires a break from the broadcasting logic of independent documentary film work

    Reconstruction to additive manufacturing

The thesis project has been carried out in collaboration with Saab training and simulation in Huskvarna, which manufactures military training products. The aim of the project was to investigate the possibility of using additive manufacturing as the method for future manufacturing for the small arms transmitter bracket (SAT-bracket, a bracket for gun) to reduce lead time, cost and weight. A physical product has been developed through the Selective Laser Melting technique (SLM), where the least possible amount of support structures has been achieved for the selected build orientation. To be able to optimize the design with the help of lattice structures, knowledge of the technology has been acquired through information searched on scientific texts and websites. Identification of strengths and weaknesses in the development process and the possibility of using a more favorable material for the application were documented to be evaluated against a traditionally manufactured component. The final designs have been modeled using two different design methods, both in which had reduced the weight between 28-44% where the stiffness is in the likes of the reference product. The conclusion drawn from the work is that additive manufacturing is a manufacturing method   that for the SAT-bracket is a favorable alternative for smaller production volume

Reinventing Journalism: Supporting processes of invention and change in media worlds

Reinventing journalism by using the capabilities of the computer as the medium is called for to increasingly reach audiences both online and in mobile contexts. Based on several case studies, this thesis investigates processes of invention and change initiated to meet this call. The main obstacle for reinvention has been difficulties with mobilizing resources for taking the risks inherent in challenging existing conventions for what to make and how. The thesis contributes both to media studies and to technology design fields, by: 1) giving an early account of technically-advanced journalism in newsrooms; 2) undertaking a rare comparison of how processes of invention and change are undertaken in the media worlds of news and documentary film-making; 3) giving a description of a relatively new domain for the technology design fields; 4) developing a model of form-giving with the computer as the medium that relates computation, interactivity and collaboration; and 5) operationalizing the concepts of infrastructure and infrastructuring for researchers willing to engage with processes of reinvention in media worlds

Fissurforseglinger som kariesprofylakse. En kvalitativ undersøkelse av felles retningslinjer for indikasjon og bruk ved seks klinikker i Nordland og Troms

The aim of this study was to investigate the use of and indications for sealants with different operators and then to compare the findings with the evidence-based literature. We wished to look at whether what is practised in the Public Dental Service (PDS) corresponded with what is described in the literature, and whether there are any guidelines. We undertook a qualitative study combined with a literature review. Six heads of clinics employed in the PDS were interviewed. The literature was searched to find the current knowledge base. There was broad consensus among those interviewed about fissure sealing molars in high risk patients, even in the absence of common national guidelines. Two of the interviewees stated that there existed clear guidelines for application of sealants, while two others expressed a wish that sealants be included in a regular prophylaxis program. None of the clinics systematically updated evidence for the use of sealants. The literature shows that fissure sealing is an effective prophylactic method in high risk patients. Sealants are an effective measure to reduce caries in individuals with high caries activity. In a low caries population, we know little about the cost effectiveness of this strategy. The use of sealants varies between different operators and is not necessarily consistent with the evidence-based literature. No national guidelines for the use of and indication for sealants exist in Norway to date
