    This survey aims to investigate the timber catch area of a private owned sawmill held by VIDA. In order to provide their sawmills with timber, Vida has a commodity company called VIDA Skog AB. This company is responsible for purchases of timber from individual forest owners. The timber and its additional costs is an expensive part of the production and effectivity is important to reduce the costs. This can be done by lowering the costs of transporting the timber which is accomplished with purchases closer to the industries. This study investigates how much of the approachable timber in a defined area that is purchased by Vida Skog and how much other adversaries purchase. It also determines the structure of the forests in the defined area concerning standing volume, annual felling, area of productive forest land, annual increment etc. The defined area, 784 232 hectares of productive forest land, contains a large standing volume where Norway spruce is the most common specie. Also Scots pine and Birch is commonly occurring. A considerable part of the annual increment is not harvested and large parts of the productive forest land, at least 28 677 hectares, is excluded in order to increase biodiversity. The total amount of harvested volume in final fellings in 2014 was 1 559 880 m3fub and 1 013 922 m3fub was calculated to be appropriate timber for sawmills. The results showed that Vida Skog purchased 21.9 percent of the available timber on the market in the defined area. It also alleges that in order to provide the sawmill with timber only from the defined area with maintained market share, the annual increment isn’t enough. A combination of increased felling in the area and an increased market share is required

    Large angle magnetization dynamics measured by time-resolved ferromagnetic resonance

    A time-resolved ferromagnetic resonance technique was used to investigate the magnetization dynamics of a 10 nm thin Permalloy film. The experiment consisted of a sequence of magnetic field pulses at a repetition rate equal to the magnetic systems resonance frequency. We compared data obtained by this technique with conventional pulsed inductive microwave magnetometry. The results for damping and frequency response obtained by these two different methods coincide in the limit of a small angle excitation. However, when applying large amplitude field pulses, the magnetization had a non-linear response. We speculate that one possible cause of the nonlinearity is related to self-amplification of incoherence, known as the Suhl instabilities.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR

    Normal values for calprotectin in stool samples of infants from the population-based longitudinal born into life study

    Faecal calprotectin is a protein used as a diagnostic marker for inflammatory bowel diseases. We determined upper limits for normal calprotectin values for neonatal, 6, 12 and 24 months old children using a turbidimetric immunoassay in a cohort of Swedish children. The advantage of the method is that opposite to previously used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method, it enables measuring single samples, and thus, shortens the analysis time significantly. There were 72 samples (41.7% female) collected neonatally, 63 samples (34.9% female) at 6 months, 60 samples (40.0% female) at 12 months and 51 samples (43.1% female) at 24 months.     Albumin Urinary Excretion Is Associated with Increased Levels of Urinary Chemokines, Cytokines, and Growth Factors Levels in Humans

    The aim of the present study was to study the associations between urine albumin excretion, and a large number of urinary chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors in a normal population. We selected 90 urine samples from individuals without CVD, diabetes, stroke or kidney disease belonging to the Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors Study (41 males and 49 females, all aged 75 years). Urinary cytokine levels were analyzed with two multiplex assays (proximity extension assays) and the cytokine levels were correlated with urine albumin. After adjustment for sex, body mass index (BMI), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), smoking and multiplicity testing, 11 biomarkers remained significantly associated with urine albumin: thrombospondin 2, interleukin 6, interleukin 8, hepatocyte growth factor, matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12), C-X-C motif chemokine 9, tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 11B, osteoprotegerin, growth-regulated alpha protein, C-X-C motif chemokine 6, oncostatin-M (OSM) and fatty acid-binding protein, intestinal, despite large differences in molecular weights. In this study, we found associations between urinary albumin and both small and large urine proteins. Additional studies are warranted to identify cytokine patterns and potential progression markers in various renal diseases

    This paper describes theoretical and experimental work directed toward finding the optimum probe dimensions and operating frequency for eddy current detection of half-penny surface cracks in nonmagnetic conducting materials. The study applies to probes which excite an approximately uniform spatial field over the length of the crack at the surface of the material. In practical terms, this means that the probe is not smaller than the crack length in any of its critical dimensions

    Identifying work ability promoting factors for home care aides and assistant nurses

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In workplace health promotion, all potential resources needs to be taken into consideration, not only factors relating to the absence of injury and the physical health of the workers, but also psychological aspects. A dynamic balance between the resources of the individual employees and the demands of work is an important prerequisite. In the home care services, there is a noticeable trend towards increased psychosocial strain on employees at work. There are a high frequency of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and injuries, and a low prevalence of sustainable work ability. The aim of this research was to identify factors promoting work ability and self-efficacy in care aides and assistant nurses within home care services.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study is based on cross-sectional data collected in a municipality in northern Sweden. Care aides (n = 58) and assistant nurses (n = 79) replied to a self-administered questionnaire (response rate 46%). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed to assess the influence of several independent variables on self-efficacy (model 1) and work ability (model 2) for care aides and assistant nurses separately.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Perceptions of personal safety, self-efficacy and musculoskeletal wellbeing contributed to work ability for assistant nurses (R<sup>2</sup>adj of 0.36, <it>p </it>< 0.001), while for care aides, the safety climate, seniority and age contributed to work ability (R<sup>2</sup>adj of 0.29, <it>p </it>= 0.001). Self-efficacy was associated with the safety climate and the physical demands of the job in both professions (R<sup>2</sup>adj of 0.24, <it>p </it>= 0.003 for care aides), and also by sex and age for the assistant nurses (R<sup>2</sup>adj of 0.31, <it>p </it>< 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The intermediate factors contributed differently to work ability in the two professions. Self-efficacy, personal safety and musculoskeletal wellbeing were important for the assistant nurses, while the work ability of the care aides was associated with the safety climate, but also with the non-changeable factors age and seniority. All these factors are important to acknowledge in practice and in further research. Proactive workplace interventions need to focus on potentially modifiable factors such as self-efficacy, safety climate, physical job demands and musculoskeletal wellbeing.</p

    Ultrasonic Determination of Porosity in Homogeneous Ceramic Samples

    An ultrasonic method was tested to rapidly determine the porosity in custom made ceramic samples. The samples with porosities between 4 and 33% were of identical composition. The porosity estimates by ultrasonic method were validated against those obtained by helium and air pycnometry as well as with Archimedean method. The ultrasonic measurements can be performed rapidly (less than a minute) but they require a well prepared sample.Peer reviewe

    Psychosocial risk exposures and musculoskeletal disorders across working-age males and females

    peer-reviewedIn 2008, The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) reported that musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) were the most common work-related health problem in Europe. Females are considered more susceptible to MSDs than are males, and older workers are more vulnerable than are younger workers. Factors specific to the job, work organization, and individual have been implicated as potential risk factors, with current interest focusing on psychosocial risk factors and the pathology of disorders. Although there is some disagreement in the literature, there is growing support that, after controlling for exposure, females have a predisposition to MSDs. More is known of the role of psychosocial risks inMSD etiology, but it is unclear if there are differences in exposures across gender and age and if this has a resultant effect on injury rates. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of MSDs and trends with psychosocial risks, across age and gender. The study group consisted of 200 female and 132 male employees from varied occupations within Ireland, ranging from age 18–66 years. The most prevalent symptoms of MSDs were for the lower back, shoulder, and neck regions. Age and gender differences in prevalence were evident for these regions. There was a general trend for increasing prevalence with age. For the psychosocial risks, significant differences in job content exposures were observed across age groups for males (p< 0.05) and females (p< 0.0005). There were also differences in scores across the age groups for mental health (p< 0.0005) and insecurity at work (p< 0.0005) for the females. The conclusions are that there were not sufficiently strong differences in exposures to relevant psychosocial risks both between genders and across age for a resultant effect on MSDs. © 2010Wiley Periodicals, IncACCEPTEDpeer-reviewe
