Women\u27s Health Issues in Baccalaureate Nursing Curricula.
The primary purpose of this study was to determine if, and how, selected women\u27s health issues are included in baccalaureate nursing curricula in the United States. The study also assessed nursing faculty\u27s perceptions of the importance of these selected women\u27s health issues to nursing curricula. Two hundred sixty baccalaureate nursing programs were randomly selected from a population of 604 1998 National League for Nursing accredited baccalaureate nursing programs in the United States. A three-part researcher developed women\u27s health survey instrument was used for data collection. The instrument consisted of questions pertaining to 19 women\u27s health issues which were selected through an extensive literature review and in consultation with several women\u27s health professionals around the country. Data were collected by mailed questionnaires to the 260 selected programs. After two mailings and a follow-up reminder post-card, the useable response rate was 65%. Results of the study included: (a) most primary women\u27s health issues are included in baccalaureate nursing programs; (b) nursing programs place greater emphasis on women\u27s health issues more general in nature, i.e., cardiovascular disease and substance abuse, than those more specific primarily to women, i.e., menopause and hormone therapy; (c) women\u27s health content can be found in a wide variety of nursing courses; (d) women\u27s health issues are considered to be very important to baccalaureate nursing curricula; and (e) the emphasis placed on women\u27s health issues varies widely among baccalaureate nursing programs. Recommendations included: (a) follow-up nation-wide research of nursing faculty and graduating students from the same program regarding the type, amount and location of women\u27s health content in baccalaureate nursing curricula; (b) development of core women\u27s health content by the nursing profession for inclusion in nursing curricula; (c) evaluation by individual programs of the type, amount and location of women\u27s health content in their curricula; and (d) inclusion of women\u27s health content in nursing diagnostic and licensure exams
Moving Beyond the Program: Incorporating Healthy Living Behaviors Throughout 4-H
A recent national needs assessment of 4-H professionals and volunteers described the need to incorporate a holistic view of healthy living throughout all 4-H programs, thereby promoting healthy lifestyles in all clubs, camps, conferences, projects, events, etc. This commentary issues a challenge to optimize the 4-H environment for healthy living and provides practical ideas to achieve that greater vision, for better living
Collaborative Approach to the Creation of Open Textbooks: From Fundraising to Publishing
Open access textbook publishing initiatives not only provide libraries the opportunity to recast their longstanding mission to facilitate research and remove barriers to information but they also impact student affordability efforts. How can a library build a program that will meet the needs of students, faculty, and administrators? The answer lies in collaboration and sharing. In 2013, with the support of a Provost-backed initiative, Portland State University (PSU) Library developed an open textbook publishing program that works with faculty to create open textbooks specifically designed for a course. The publishing initiative, PDXOpen, has published 10 open textbooks with an additional 7 in production. PDXOpen has saved PSU Students over $85,000 and has been sustained through numerous collaborations and stakeholders including the Provost, Alumni Association and donors. Working with these varied stakeholders the Library has had the opportunity to work with PSU faculty and provide a platform to make open textbooks accessible to students. The presentation will focus on collaborative approaches to open textbook publishing efforts, and provide examples of how to communicate the value of open textbooks to influence varied stakeholders. Presenters will also review the process of working with faculty to create their open textbook projects, working with campus experts to support the program participants, and the continued development of open textbooks at PSU.
In addition the following insights and lessons learned will be discussed: Developing donor relationships Importance of peer-reviewers outside of the university Understanding author needs Difficulty of estimating cost and time to develop an open textbook Pursuing collaborative efforts for the development and publishing of open textbooks Supporting updates and edition
Two Novel Mutations Identified in an African-American Child with Chediak-Higashi Syndrome
Background. Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by oculocutaneous albinism, immunodeficiency, coagulopathy and late-onset, progressive neurological dysfunction. It also has an “accelerated phase” characterized by hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). The disease is caused by mutations in the CHS1/LYST gene located on chromosome 1, which affects lysosome morphology and function. We report the case of an African-American child with CHS in Case. This 16-month old African-American girl presented with fever and lethargy. The proband had pale skin compared to her parents, with light brown eyes, silvery hair and massive hepatosplenomegaly. Her laboratory evaluation was remarkable for pancytopenia, high serum ferritin and an elevated LDH. Bone marrow aspirate revealed large inclusions in granulocytes and erythrophagocytosis consistent with HLH. Genetic evaluation revealed two novel nonsense mutations in the CHS1 gene: c.3622C > T (p.Q1208X) and c.11002G > T (p.E3668X). Conclusions. Our patient is one of the few cases of CHS reported in the African American population. We identified 2 nonsense mutations in the CHS1 gene, the first mutation analysis published of an African-American child with Chediak-Higashi Syndrome. These two mutations predict a severe phenotype and thus identification of these mutations has an important clinical significance in CHS

Zmym4 is required for early cranial gene expression and craniofacial cartilage formation
The Six1 transcription factor plays important roles in the development of cranial sensory organs, and point mutations underlie craniofacial birth defects. Because Six1’s transcriptional activity can be modulated by interacting proteins, we previously screened for candidate interactors and identified zinc-finger MYM-containing protein 4 (Zmym4) by its inclusion of a few domains with a bona fide cofactor, Sine oculis binding protein (Sobp). Although Zmym4 has been implicated in regulating early brain development and certain cancers, its role in craniofacial development has not previously been described
Changes in Autism and Co-Occurring Conditions from Preschool to Adolescence: Considerations for Precision Monitoring and Treatment Planning
Purpose To describe retention of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis from preschool to adolescence and the most common co-occurring diagnoses among children with ASD in preschool and adolescence. A second objective was to identify co-occurring diagnoses more likely to emerge between preschool and adolescence among children with ASD vs. another developmental or mental health diagnosis in preschool. Methods Children completed a case-control study when they were between 2 and 5 years of age. Caregivers reported their child’s diagnoses of ASD and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), any developmental delay (DD), epilepsy/seizure disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, sensory integration disorder, and speech/language disorder when the child was preschool age and, separately, during adolescence. Any anxiety and depression/mood disorder, intellectual disability (ID), and learning disability (LD) were considered only in adolescence. Results 85.5% of preschool children retained their ASD diagnosis in adolescence. DD, sensory integration disorder, and speech-language disorder co-occurred in over 20% of preschool age children with ASD. These same conditions, along with anxiety disorders, ADHD, ID, and LD, co-occurred in over 20% of adolescents with ASD. Significantly more children with ASD vs. another developmental or mental health diagnosis in preschool gained diagnoses of ADHD, DD, sensory integration disorder, and speech-language disorder by adolescence. Conclusion ASD is a highly stable diagnosis and co-occurring conditions are common. The prevalence of co-occurring diagnoses may depend on age, with some persisting from preschool to adolescence and others emerging over time. Health and education providers can use these findings to inform precision monitoring and treatment planning
Improving Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Providers' Perceptions of Palliative Care through a Weekly Case-Based Discussion
Objective: The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of a weekly palliative care-guided, case-based discussion of high-risk infants on Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) physician (MD) and Advanced Practice Provider (APP) perceptions of pediatric palliative care (PPC). Study Design: The study setting was a level IV academic NICU in a United States midwestern children's hospital. A pre/post design was used to evaluate the effects of a weekly palliative care-guided, case-based discussion of high-risk infants on neonatology providers' (MD and APP) perspectives of palliative and end-of-life care in the NICU using a previously published survey instrument. Surveys were completed at baseline and after 12 months of implementation. Data was analyzed with a Wilcoxon Signed Rank test with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Thirty-one providers (13 APPs and 18 MDs) completed both pre- and post-intervention surveys. Post-intervention, providers were more likely to endorse that they "are comfortable with PPC", "feel comfortable teaching PPC to trainees", "feel confident handling end-of-life care", "have time to discuss PPC", and "were satisfied with the transition to end-of-life care for their most recent patient". They also were more likely to report, "families' perception of burden is relevant when making ethical decisions", that "parents are involved in decisions regarding palliative care", and that their "institution is supportive of palliative care." (p-values < 0.05 for all). Conclusion: NICU provider perceptions of palliative care can be improved through the implementation of a case-based interdisciplinary conference that emphasizes palliative care domains in the context of Neonatal ICU care
Using appreciative inquiry as a framework to enhance the patient experience
The following case depicts the journey of a non-profit hospital in an under-served community and its attempts to turn around suffering patient experience. The Hospital turned to the theories of Appreciative Inquiry and the power of a strengths-based approach to create a framework to support the patient experience initiatives. Hospital leadership led the formation of a Patient Experience Team to implement ten initiatives in order increase the top box score in the domain of willingness to recommend the hospital, as that was selected as a global measure of success for the overall improvement project
