    Some Meat Characteristics in Karya Lambs

    A research was conducted during 2008 and 2009 to determine meat quality characteristics in 72 male and female Karya lambs in pasture, pasture plus feeding and intensive conditions. Significant differences were obtained between fattening groups in M. Longissimus Dorsi muscle for L* (lightness) and the highest value was calculated in intensive groups and male lambs. Also the meat colour appeared redder (high a* value) in this group and their male lambs. The intermusculer fat (marbling) was evaluated better in intensive group and male lambs. Regarding fatty acid composition, while SFA and MUFA were increased in intensive conditon, C16:0 was the highest, C18:0 and C18:1 n-9 were the lowest value in pasture lambs.     Investigations on pests, diseases and present early warning system of apple orchards in Isparta, Turkey

    As a result of three year surveys performed in the apple orchards in Isparta region, 19 pest species belonging to 4 orders were determined and it was found that the main pest was codling moth. Most of the predators and parasitoids were effective against aphids and they were mostly found in the orchards where selective pesticides were used. Apple scab and powdery mildew were the most common and important diseases. Biology of codling moth and apple scab in the region were investigated. By using the obtained data, proper application times were given and some recommendations regarding integrated pest management program in apple orchards, were summarized

    The validity of eight neoclassical facial canons in the Turkish adults

    The neoclassical canons were used to define the proportions between various areas of the head and face. Therefore, this study was done to establish the neoclassical canons of facial proportions in Turkish adults. A total of 200 healthy adults 20 to 35 years of age were examined. Using anthropometric landmarks, 5 horizontal and 9 vertical direct measurements were made on the faces with a sliding calliper. Results have been compared with 8 neoclassical facial canons. When comparing between sexes, a significant difference has been found in all measurements except the upper facial width, left eye-fissure width, forehead height I and II (p < 0.005). The nasofacial proportion has been found to include the most proportional subjects (33%) followed by the orbito-nasal (30%), the orbital proportion (25%) and the naso-oral proportion (17%) in the female. Considering the male, the orbital proportion has been found to include the most proportional subjects (23%) followed by the orbito-nasal proportion (21%), naso-facial proportion (19%) and the naso-oral proportion (17%). The neoclassical canons have been shown to rarely be applicable to Turkish adults and our results may contribute to determine the concepts of transcultural facial structures

    Evolution of Genetic Techniques: Past, Present, and Beyond.

    Genetics is the study of heredity, which means the study of genes and factors related to all aspects of genes. The scientific history of genetics began with the works of Gregor Mendel in the mid-19th century. Prior to Mendel, genetics was primarily theoretical whilst, after Mendel, the science of genetics was broadened to include experimental genetics. Developments in all fields of genetics and genetic technology in the first half of the 20th century provided a basis for the later developments. In the second half of the 20th century, the molecular background of genetics has become more understandable. Rapid technological advancements, followed by the completion of Human Genome Project, have contributed a great deal to the knowledge of genetic factors and their impact on human life and diseases. Currently, more than 1800 disease genes have been identified, more than 2000 genetic tests have become available, and in conjunction with this at least 350 biotechnology-based products have been released onto the market. Novel technologies, particularly next generation sequencing, have dramatically accelerated the pace of biological research, while at the same time increasing expectations. In this paper, a brief summary of genetic history with short explanations of most popular genetic techniques is given

    Distribution of mast cells in lung tissues of rats exposed to biomass smoke

    This study was designed to evaluate the distribution of mast cells in the lung tissues of rats exposed to biomass  smoke. Fifty six female Wistar albino adult rats were used. They were divided into two experimental groups  (control and biomass smoke-treated), each containing 28 animals. Control rats were not exposed to the  biomass smoke at any time during the experiment. Rats in the treatment group were exposed daily (one hour)  to biomass smoke for 3, 6 or 9 months. Lung tissues samples were obtained under deep anesthesia from the  randomly selected 7 animals in both groups. Lung tissues were fixed in Mota’s fixative (BLA) for 24 h and  embedded in paraffin. Sections of 6 μm thickness were cut and stained with 0.5% toluidine blue in 0.5 N  hydrochloric acid at pH 0.5 for 30 min. The numbers of mast cell in lung tissues of the animals exposed to  the biomass for 6 or 9 months were significantly (P<0.05) higher than controls. This study showed that long  term exposure to biomass smoke was associated with the increased number of mast cells in the lung.
