Recently, in parallel with the report of humangenome project, next generation sequencing techniques arewidely applied to study human genome providing a basis forintegrating information about genome, exome, and transcrip-tome of a living organism. The future applications of genetictesting are discussed in popularmedia everyday. Accordingly,this special issue was prepared to provide a basis for integrat-ing information from this emerging field. Among them, wehave given place to research articles as well as clinical studies.Although polymorphism studies have lost their significancecompared to previous years when genetic studies gainedpopularity, some polymorphisms in the genome have beenreported to play considerable role in development of patho-logical conditions. Their importance in nasopharyngeal car-cinoma, osteosarcoma, and pediatric tuberculosis is reportedin 3 research articles. Integrated diagnostic approach includ-ing clinical and biochemical analysis followed by genetictests was discussed in children with neurodevelopmental andneurometabolic diseases. Notwithstanding a great deal ofadvanced genetic testing that has become available, cytoge-netics never lost its importance. One of the studies pointsout that patients benefit from the information that couldbe provided by cytogenetics in clinical decision-making,followup, and prognosis in myelodysplastic syndrome. Onthe other hand, fragile X, which is the most common geneticcause in hereditary intellectual disability syndromes, wasdiscussed on a basis of a large number of enrolled subjects.Genetic variant in hepatitis C virus and its effect in the courseof antiviral treatment were also evaluated in chronic hepatitisC patients and has made an important contribution to theknowledge of patients’ management. Finally and undoubt-edly, next generation studies as a robust and cost-effectivegenetic technology have found place in this special issue in3 clinical studies relating to the breast and ovarian cancer,Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and retinitis pigmentosa.In summary we aimed to combine reports relating tovarious genetic technologies in a number of disease condi-tions. However, as mentioned in the review article by A. A.Durmaz et al., novel technologies in the field of genetics havenoticeably accelerated in the last few decades. Even thoughMoore’s law will continuously apply to the developmentalspeed in computer technologies, the cost of sequencing hasdeclined and the data obtained from NGS platforms hasincreased at a rate that outpaced Moore’s law. Recently a newera has clearly begun with genetics to be one of the majorplayers in human life. In the near future, it will be possibleto estimate the risks and prepare prevention strategies fora number of genetically based conditions just by analyzinga few drops of blood.
