    Magnetization Relaxation and Collective Spin Excitations in Correlated Double--Exchange Ferromagnets

    We study spin relaxation and dynamics of collective spin excitations in correlated double--exchange ferromagnets. For this, we introduce an expansion of the Green's functions equations of motion that treats non--perturbativerly all correlations between a given number of spin and charge excitations and becomes exact within a sub--space of states. Our method treats relaxation beyond Fermi's Golden Rule while recovering previous variational results for the spin--wave dispersion. We find that the momentum dependence of the spin--wave dephasing rate changes qualitatively due to the on--site Coulomb interaction, in a way that resembles experiment, and depends on its interplay with the magnetic exchange interaction and itinerant spin lifetime. We show that the collective spin relaxation and its dependence on the carrier concentration depends sensitively on three--body correlations between a spin excitation and a Fermi sea electron and hole.     Is BMI alone a sufficient outcome to evaluate interventions for child obesity?

    BACKGROUND: BMI is often used to evaluate the effectiveness of childhood obesity interventions, but such interventions may have additional benefits independent of effects on adiposity. We investigated whether benefits to health outcomes following the Mind, Exercise, Nutrition
Do It! (MEND) childhood obesity intervention were independent of or associated with changes in zBMI. METHODS: A total of 79 obese children were measured at baseline; 71 and 42 participants were followed-up at 6 and 12 months respectively, and split into four groups depending on magnitude of change in zBMI. Differences between groups for waist circumference, cardiovascular fitness, physical and sedentary activities, and self-esteem were investigated. RESULTS: Apart from waist circumference and its z-score, there were no differences or trends across zBMI subgroups for any outcome. Independent of the degree of zBMI change, benefits in several parameters were observed in children participating in this obesity intervention. CONCLUSION: We concluded that isolating a single parameter like zBMI change and neglecting other important outcomes is restrictive and may undermine the evaluation of childhood obesity intervention effectiveness

    Non-trivial solutions in string field theory may lead to the spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance and to new tensor-matter interactions. It is argued that requiring the contribution of the vacuum expectation values of Lorentz tensors to account for the vacuum energy up to the level that Ω0Λ=0.5\Omega_{0}^{\Lambda} = 0.5 implies the new interactions range is λ∌10−4m\lambda \sim 10^{-4} m.     The Origin of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Theories with Large Extra Dimensions

    We suggest that the electroweak Higgs particles can be identified with extra-dimensional components of the gauge fields, which after compactification on a certain topologically non-trivial background become tachyonic and condense. If the tachyonic mass is a tree level effect, the natural scale of the gauge symmetry breaking is set by the inverse radius of the internal space, which, in case of the electroweak symmetry, must be around ∌1/\sim 1/TeV. We discuss the possibility of a vanishing tree level mass for the Higgs. In such a scenario the tachyonic mass can be induced by quantum loops and can be naturally smaller than the compactification scale. We give an example in which this possibility can be realized. Starting from an Einstein--Yang--Mills theory coupled to fermions in 10-dimensions, we are able to reproduce the spectrum of the Standard Model like chiral fermions and Higgs type scalars in 4-dimensions upon compactifying on CP1×CP2{\mathbb{C}}P^1\times {\mathbb{C}}P^2. The existence of a monopole solution on CP1{\mathbb{C}}P^1 and a self dual U(1) instanton on CP2{\mathbb{C}}P^2 are essential in obtaining chiral fermions as well as tachyonic or massless scalars in 4-dimensions. We give a simple rule which helps us to identify the presence of tachyons on the monopole background on S2S^2.Comment: 33 pages. Version accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.

    `Natural Masslessness Conservation' for neutrinos in two Higgs-doublet models

    We present a model which supplements the Standard Electroweak Model with three right-handed neutrinos and one extra scalar doublet which does not develop a vacuum expectation value. With the aid of a discrete symmetry the neutrinos are kept strictly massless. This model has several interesting features. It has unsuppressed lepton flavour violating processes, in particular Ό→eÎł\mu \rightarrow e \gamma, hinting at the possibility that these may soon be within experimental reach. The ZZ and WW interactions become non-diagonal at one loop level. In particular, a non-trivial leptonic mixing matrix is seen to arise from the clash between the charged gauge boson and the charged scalar interactions.Comment: (Latex file, 12 pages.     Ambient particulate pollution and the world-wide prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema in children: Phase One of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC)

    Objectives: To investigate the effect of ambient particulate matter on variation in childhood prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema. Methods: Prevalences of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema obtained in Phase One of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) were matched with city-level estimates of residential PM10 obtained from a World Bank model. Associations were investigated using binomial regression adjusting for GNP per capita and for clustering within country. For countries with more than one centre, a two stage meta-analysis was carried out. The results were compared with a meta-analysis of published multi-centre studies. Results: Annual concentrations of PM₁₀ at city level were obtained for 105 ISAAC centres in 51 countries. After controlling for GNP per capita, there was a weak negative association between PM₁₀ and various outcomes. For severe wheeze in 13-14-year-olds, the OR for a 10 ÎŒg/mÂł increase in PM₁₀ was 0.92 (95 CI 0.84 to 1.00). In 24 countries with more than one centre, most summary estimates for within-country associations were weakly positive. For severe wheeze in 13-14-year-olds, the summary OR for a 10 ÎŒg/mÂł increase in PM₁₀ was 1.01 (0.92 to 1.10). This result was close to a summary OR of 0.99 (0.91 to 1.06) obtained from published multi-centre studies. Conclusions: Modelled estimates of particulate matter at city level are imprecise and incomplete estimates of personal exposure to ambient air pollutants. Nevertheless, our results together with those of previous multi-centre studies, suggest that urban background PM₁₀ has little or no association with the prevalence of childhood asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis or eczema either within or between countries

    Automated Diabetic Retinopathy Image Assessment Software: Diagnostic Accuracy and Cost-Effectiveness Compared with Human Graders.

    OBJECTIVE: With the increasing prevalence of diabetes, annual screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) by expert human grading of retinal images is challenging. Automated DR image assessment systems (ARIAS) may provide clinically effective and cost-effective detection of retinopathy. We aimed to determine whether ARIAS can be safely introduced into DR screening pathways to replace human graders. DESIGN: Observational measurement comparison study of human graders following a national screening program for DR versus ARIAS. PARTICIPANTS: Retinal images from 20 258 consecutive patients attending routine annual diabetic eye screening between June 1, 2012, and November 4, 2013. METHODS: Retinal images were manually graded following a standard national protocol for DR screening and were processed by 3 ARIAS: iGradingM, Retmarker, and EyeArt. Discrepancies between manual grades and ARIAS results were sent to a reading center for arbitration. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Screening performance (sensitivity, false-positive rate) and diagnostic accuracy (95% confidence intervals of screening-performance measures) were determined. Economic analysis estimated the cost per appropriate screening outcome. RESULTS: Sensitivity point estimates (95% confidence intervals) of the ARIAS were as follows: EyeArt 94.7% (94.2%-95.2%) for any retinopathy, 93.8% (92.9%-94.6%) for referable retinopathy (human graded as either ungradable, maculopathy, preproliferative, or proliferative), 99.6% (97.0%-99.9%) for proliferative retinopathy; Retmarker 73.0% (72.0 %-74.0%) for any retinopathy, 85.0% (83.6%-86.2%) for referable retinopathy, 97.9% (94.9%-99.1%) for proliferative retinopathy. iGradingM classified all images as either having disease or being ungradable. EyeArt and Retmarker saved costs compared with manual grading both as a replacement for initial human grading and as a filter prior to primary human grading, although the latter approach was less cost-effective. CONCLUSIONS: Retmarker and EyeArt systems achieved acceptable sensitivity for referable retinopathy when compared with that of human graders and had sufficient specificity to make them cost-effective alternatives to manual grading alone. ARIAS have the potential to reduce costs in developed-world health care economies and to aid delivery of DR screening in developing or remote health care settings
