    Nanoflare Evidence from Analysis of the X-Ray Variability of an Active Region Observed with Hinode/XRT

    The heating of the solar corona is one of the big questions in astrophysics. Rapid pulses called nanoflares are among the best candidate mechanisms. The analysis of the time variability of coronal X-ray emission is potentially a very useful tool to detect impulsive events. We analyze the small-scale variability of a solar active region in a high cadence Hinode/XRT observation. The dataset allows us to detect very small deviations of emission fluctuations from the distribution expected for a constant rate. We discuss the deviations in the light of the pulsed-heating scenario.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Fifteen patients had hepatic hemangiomas removed with liver resections that ranged in extent from local excision to right trisegmentectomy. There was no mortality and little morbidity. The propriety and feasibility of extirpative treatment of such liver tumors has been emphasized by this experience

    A generalization of heterochromatic graphs

    In 2006, Suzuki, and Akbari & Alipour independently presented a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have a heterochromatic spanning tree, where a heterochromatic spanning tree is a spanning tree whose edges have distinct colors. In this paper, we propose ff-chromatic graphs as a generalization of heterochromatic graphs. An edge-colored graph is ff-chromatic if each color cc appears on at most f(c)f(c) edges. We also present a necessary and sufficient condition for edge-colored graphs to have an ff-chromatic spanning forest with exactly mm components. Moreover, using this criterion, we show that a gg-chromatic graph GG of order nn with E(G)>(nm2)|E(G)|>\binom{n-m}{2} has an ff-chromatic spanning forest with exactly mm (1mn11 \le m \le n-1) components if g(c)E(G)nmf(c)g(c) \le \frac{|E(G)|}{n-m}f(c) for any color cc.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

    Orbital Ordering in ferromagnetic Lu2V2O7

    We have observed the orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic Mott-insulator Lu2V2O7 by the polarized neutron diffraction technique. The orbital ordering pattern determined from the observed magnetic form factors can be explained in terms of a linear combination of wave functions |yz>, |zx> and |xy>; |0> = (1/3)^(1/2) |xy> + (1/3)^(1/2)|yz> + (1/3)^(1/2) |zx> which is proportional to |(x + y + z)^2 - r^2>; where each orbital is extended toward the center-of-mass of the V tetrahedron.     Multi-wavelength spectroscopic observation of EUV jet in AR 10960

    We have studied the relationship between the velocity and temperature of a solar EUV jet. The highly accelerated jet occurred in the active region NOAA 10960 on 2007 June 5. Multi-wavelength spectral observations with EIS/Hinode allow us to investigate Doppler velocities at the wide temperature range. We analyzed the three-dimensional angle of the jet from the stereoscopic analysis with STEREO. Using this angle and Doppler velocity, we derived the true velocity of the jet. As a result, we found that the cool jet observed with \ion{He}{2} 256 \AA log10Te[K]=4.9\log_{10}T_e[\rm{K}] = 4.9 is accelerated to around 220km/s220 \rm{km/s} which is over the upper limit of the chromospheric evaporation. The velocities observed with the other lines are under the upper limit of the chromospheric evaporation while most of the velocities of hot lines are higher than that of cool lines. We interpret that the chromospheric evaporation and magnetic acceleration occur simultaneously.     Energy Spectra of Quantum Turbulence: Large-scale Simulation and Modeling

    In 204832048^3 simulation of quantum turbulence within the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we demonstrate that the large scale motions have a classical Kolmogorov-1941 energy spectrum E(k) ~ k^{-5/3}, followed by an energy accumulation with E(k) ~ const at k about the reciprocal mean intervortex distance. This behavior was predicted by the L'vov-Nazarenko-Rudenko bottleneck model of gradual eddy-wave crossover [J. Low Temp.     Serotonin Transporter Gene Polymorphism Modulates Activity and Connectivity within an Emotional Arousal Network of Healthy Men during an Aversive Visceral Stimulus.

    Background and aimsThe 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) has been linked to increased stress responsiveness and negative emotional states. During fearful face recognition individuals with the s allele of 5-HTTLPR show greater amygdala activation. We aimed to test the hypothesis that the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism differentially affects connectivity within brain networks during an aversive visceral stimulus.MethodsTwenty-three healthy male subjects were enrolled. DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood. The genotype of 5-HTTLPR was determined using polymerase chain reaction. Subjects with the s/s genotype (n = 13) were compared to those with the l allele (genotypes l/s, l/l, n = 10). Controlled rectal distension from 0 to 40 mmHg was delivered in random order using a barostat. Radioactive H2[15-O] saline was injected at time of distension followed by positron emission tomography (PET). Changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were analyzed using partial least squares (PLS) and structural equation modeling (SEM).ResultsDuring baseline, subjects with s/s genotype demonstrated a significantly increased negative influence of pregenual ACC (pACC) on amygdala activity compared to l-carriers. During inflation, subjects with s/s genotype demonstrated a significantly greater positive influence of hippocampus on amygdala activity compared to l-carriers.ConclusionIn male Japanese subjects, individuals with s/s genotype show alterations in the connectivity of brain regions involved in stress responsiveness and emotion regulation during aversive visceral stimuli compared to those with l carriers
