Encounters between adolescents and general practice in Australia
Aim: To describe the nature of the encounters between adolescents and general practice in Australia. Methods: Data collected by the Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health programme from 1998-2004 were analysed. Data for 10-14-year-old and 15-19-year-old males and females were compared with data for 25-29-year-olds. The outcome measures included: number of encounters compared with other age groups, reasons for encounter, problems managed, treatments prescribed and referrals made for key problems and types of consultations. Results: Adolescents have the lowest rate of encounter with general practice, compared with all other age groups. Respiratory, skin, musculoskeletal and unspecified (fever, injury, weakness) problems accounted for the great majority of reasons for encounter and problems managed. Management of mental health problems, preventive health care and health education were very infrequently managed problems. Standard surgery consultations were more common among adolescents than among young adults. Conclusions: Adolescents have a relatively low rate of encounter with general practice and the problems managed are primarily physical ailments. There is great scope to improve delivery of preventive health care and to increase management of mental health problems. © 2008 The Authors
Markov chain aggregation and its application to rule-based modelling
Rule-based modelling allows to represent molecular interactions in a compact
and natural way. The underlying molecular dynamics, by the laws of stochastic
chemical kinetics, behaves as a continuous-time Markov chain. However, this
Markov chain enumerates all possible reaction mixtures, rendering the analysis
of the chain computationally demanding and often prohibitive in practice. We
here describe how it is possible to efficiently find a smaller, aggregate
chain, which preserves certain properties of the original one. Formal methods
and lumpability notions are used to define algorithms for automated and
efficient construction of such smaller chains (without ever constructing the
original ones). We here illustrate the method on an example and we discuss the
applicability of the method in the context of modelling large signalling
pathways
Cryo-EM structure of a helicase loading intermediate containing ORC-Cdc6-Cdt1-MCM2-7 bound to DNA
In eukaryotes, the Cdt1-bound replicative helicase core MCM2-7 is loaded onto DNA by the ORC-Cdc6 ATPase to form a prereplicative complex (pre-RC) with an MCM2-7 double hexamer encircling DNA. Using purified components in the presence of ATP-γS, we have captured in vitro an intermediate in pre-RC assembly that contains a complex between the ORC-Cdc6 and Cdt1-MCM2-7 heteroheptamers called the OCCM. Cryo-EM studies of this 14-subunit complex reveal that the two separate heptameric complexes are engaged extensively, with the ORC-Cdc6 N-terminal AAA+ domains latching onto the C-terminal AAA+ motor domains of the MCM2-7 hexamer. The conformation of ORC-Cdc6 undergoes a concerted change into a right-handed spiral with helical symmetry that is identical to that of the DNA double helix. The resulting ORC-Cdc6 helicase loader shows a notable structural similarity to the replication factor C clamp loader, suggesting a conserved mechanism of action
Pollen brush of Astragalus L. subgenus Pogonophace Bunge (Leguminosae) and its systematic significance
The style morphologies of Astragalus subgenus Pogonophace (Leguminosae) were examined using the scanning electron microscope. The results showed that in most species, there are erect and upwardly pointed trichomes on the style. This kind of structure is exactly a pollen brush. The style of A. craibianus Simps. is glabrous, and there are finger-like projections formed by the epidermal cells only on the stigma. A. hoantchy Franch. has a penicillate stigma. The three types of styles are not homologous. These supported the exclusion of sect. Sesbanella and A. craibianus from Pogonophace. In molecular studies, some Pogonophace species are nested within the Coluteinae clade. This study found that those species rightly have the structure of pollen brush. Therefore, the pollen brush is likely to be a synapomorphy of Pogonophace and Coluteinae. The close relationship between Pogonophace and subtribe Coluteinae (tribe Galegeae) can be supported by the pollen brush
The Maximal Inverse Seesaw from Operator and Oscillating Asymmetric Sneutrino Dark Matter
The maximal supersymmetric inverse seesaw mechanism (MSIS)
provides a natural way to relate asymmetric dark matter (ADM) with neutrino
physics. In this paper we point out that, MSIS is a natural outcome if one
dynamically realizes the inverse seesaw mechanism in the next-to minimal
supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) via the dimension-five operator
, with the NMSSM singlet developing TeV scale VEV; it
slightly violates lepton number due to the suppression by the fundamental scale
, thus preserving maximally. The resulting sneutrino is a
distinguishable ADM candidate, oscillating and favored to have weak scale mass.
A fairly large annihilating cross section of such a heavy ADM is available due
to the presence of singlet.Comment: journal versio
Asymmetric Origin for Gravitino Relic Density in the Hybrid Gravity-Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking
We propose the hybrid gravity-gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking where the
gravitino mass is about several GeV. The strong constraints on supersymmetry
viable parameter space from the CMS and ATLAS experiments at the LHC can be
relaxed due to the heavy colored supersymmetric particles, and it is consistent
with null results in the dark matter (DM) direct search experiments such as
XENON100. In particular, the possible maximal flavor and CP violations from the
relatively small gravity mediation may naturally account for the recent LHCb
anomaly. In addition, because the gravitino mass is around the asymmetric DM
mass, we propose the asymmetric origin of the gravitino relic density and solve
the cosmological coincident problem on the DM and baryon densities \Omega_{\rm
DM}:\Omega_{B}\approx 5:1. The gravitino relic density arises from asymmetric
metastable particle (AMP) late decay. However, we show that there is no AMP
candidate in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (SM) due to the robust
gaugino/Higgsino mediated wash-out effects. Interestingly, AMP can be realized
in the well motivated supersymmetric SMs with vector-like particles or
continuous U(1)_R symmetry. Especially, the lightest CP-even Higgs boson mass

Observation of Spontaneous Brillouin Cooling
While radiation-pressure cooling is well known, the Brillouin scattering of
light from sound is considered an acousto-optical amplification-only process.
It was suggested that cooling could be possible in multi-resonance Brillouin
systems when phonons experience lower damping than light. However, this regime
was not accessible in traditional Brillouin systems since backscattering
enforces high acoustical frequencies associated with high mechanical damping.
Recently, forward Brillouin scattering in microcavities has allowed access to
low-frequency acoustical modes where mechanical dissipation is lower than
optical dissipation, in accordance with the requirements for cooling. Here we
experimentally demonstrate cooling via such a forward Brillouin process in a
microresonator. We show two regimes of operation for the Brillouin process:
acoustical amplification as is traditional, but also for the first time, a
Brillouin cooling regime. Cooling is mediated by an optical pump, and scattered
light, that beat and electrostrictively attenuate the Brownian motion of the

Comparison of severity of illness scoring systems for patients with nosocomial bloodstream infection due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa
BACKGROUND: Several acute illness severity scores have been proposed for evaluating patients on admission to intensive care units but these have not been compared for patients with nosocomial bloodstream infection (nBSI). We compared three severity of illness scoring systems for predicting mortality in patients with nBSI due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. METHODS: We performed a historical cohort study on 63 adults in intensive care units with P. aeruginosa monomicrobial nBSI. RESULTS: The Acute Physiology, Age, Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II), Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA), and Simplified Acute Physiologic Score (SAPS II), were calculated daily from 2 days prior through 2 days after the first positive blood culture. Calculation of the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve confirmed that APACHE II and SAPS II at day -1 and SOFA at day +1 were better predictors of outcome than days -2, 0 and day 2 of BSI. By stepwise logistic regression analysis of these three scoring systems, SAPS II (OR: 13.03, CI95% 2.51–70.49) and APACHE II (OR: 12.51, CI95% 3.12–50.09) on day -1 were the best predictors for mortality. CONCLUSION: SAPS II and APACHE II are more accurate than the SOFA score for predicting mortality in this group of patients at day -1 of BSI
Export of functional Streptomyces coelicolor alditol oxidase to the periplasm or cell surface of Escherichia coli and its application in whole-cell biocatalysis
Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) alditol oxidase (AldO) is a soluble monomeric flavoprotein in which the flavin cofactor is covalently linked to the polypeptide chain. AldO displays high reactivity towards different polyols such as xylitol and sorbitol. These characteristics make AldO industrially relevant, but full biotechnological exploitation of this enzyme is at present restricted by laborious and costly purification steps. To eliminate the need for enzyme purification, this study describes a whole-cell AldO biocatalyst system. To this end, we have directed AldO to the periplasm or cell surface of Escherichia coli. For periplasmic export, AldO was fused to endogenous E. coli signal sequences known to direct their passenger proteins into the SecB, signal recognition particle (SRP), or Twin-arginine translocation (Tat) pathway. In addition, AldO was fused to an ice nucleation protein (INP)-based anchoring motif for surface display. The results show that Tat-exported AldO and INP-surface-displayed AldO are active. The Tat-based system was successfully employed in converting xylitol by whole cells, whereas the use of the INP-based system was most likely restricted by lipopolysaccharide LPS in wild-type cells. It is anticipated that these whole-cell systems will be a valuable tool for further biological and industrial exploitation of AldO and other cofactor-containing enzymes.
