Numerical calculation of the currents in bent wire antennas
The current distribution for bent dipole antennas is numerically calculated by using a digital computer. A delta-gap at the center is assumed for the drive. Several different bend-angles are considered including the cases of the straight wire and the inverted-L. The total length of the wire considered is λ/2 while the ratio of the bent portion over the vertical portion is varied. The method of solution is based on Mei\u27s integral equation and the method of moments. The use of Mei\u27s integral equation eliminates the need for the application of the boundary condition at the point of bending. For the basis functions, both the rectangular pulses and the piecewise sinusoids are used in order to compare the convergence. The test functions are the Dirac delta functions --Abstract, page ii
RPC Gap Production and Performance for CMS RE4 Upgrade
CMS experiment constructed the fourth Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) trigger
station composed of 144 RPCs to enhance the high momentum muon trigger
efficiency at both endcap regions. All new CMS endcap RPC gaps are produced in
accordance with QA and QC at the Korea Detector Laboratory (KODEL) in Korea.
All qualified gaps have been delivered to three assembly sites: CERN in
Switzerland, BARC in India, and Ghent University in Belgium for the RPC
detector assembly. In this paper, we present the detailed procedures used in
the production of RPC gaps adopted for the CMS upgrade.Comment: RPC2014 conference contribution, 7 pages, 8 figure
Noninvasive Diagnostic and Prognostic Assessment Tools for Liver Fibrosis and Cirrhosis in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease
Liver fibrosis, that is, excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix protein, occurs and is the woundâhealing response and common final pathway of various chronic liver diseases. Advanced hepatic fibrosis caused by chronic liver inflammation eventually progresses to cirrhosis, and prognosis and management of chronic liver diseases depend on the fibrotic severities. Therefore, the early and precise evaluation of severity and status of liver fibrosis provides useful information for diagnosis as well as treatment planning and treatment efficacy and prognosis. Although invasive liver biopsy is the gold standard to assess the nature and severity of hepatic fibrosis, it has several recognized limitations including sampling error and interâobserver variability in interpretation and staging. Furthermore, the dynamic process of fibrosis resulting from progression and regression is difficult to capture with biopsy alone. Therefore, alternative, simple, reliable, and noninvasive direct and indirect serum markers able to predict the presence of significant fibrosis or cirrhosis in patients with chronic liver disease with considerable accuracy were needed. The hepatology experts are actively researching noninvasive methods of fibrosis quantification. The aims of this chapter were to review the nature and limitations of the several noninvasive methods for the assessment of presence and severity of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease
Double resonance of Raman transitions in a degenerate Fermi gas
We measure momentum-resolved Raman spectra of a spin-polarized degenerate
Fermi gas of Yb atoms for a wide range of magnetic fields, where the
atoms are irradiated by a pair of counterpropagating Raman laser beams as in
the conventional spin-orbit coupling scheme. Double resonance of first- and
second-order Raman transitions occurs at a certain magnetic field and the
spectrum exhibits a doublet splitting for high laser intensities. The measured
spectral splitting is quantitatively accounted for by the Autler-Townes effect.
We show that our measurement results are consistent with the spinful band
structure of a Fermi gas in the spatially oscillating effective magnetic field
generated by the Raman laser fields.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Determinants Of Enforcement Action By The Financial Supervisory Service Of Korea From The Perspective Of Audit Firms
In this study, we examine the determinants of enforcement action by the Financial Supervisory Service of Korea from the perspective of audit firms. Enforcement action is an indication of audit failure. Both client- and audit firm-specific factors are involved in its occurrence. Most published studies of enforcement after audit failure focus on client characteristics because details about audit firms from financial statements and information about organizational structure are not publicly available. However, examining the issues surrounding enforcement from the perspective of audit firms may also be valuable in elucidating the potential determinants of audit failure resulting in enforcement action. Utilizing publicly available data from audit firms in South Korea, we identify several audit firm characteristics as determinants of enforcement action. The results of our empirical analysis reveal that the likelihood of audit failure is positively associated with the ratio of accounts receivable to total assets, the ratio of audit fees to total revenue, the ratio of partners to the total number of CPAs, CEO ownership, and age of audit firms. In addition, the likelihood of audit failure is negatively associated with ownership concentration and profitability. These associations are more pronounced in non-affiliated audit firms than affiliated audit firms. Several useful implications for regulators are described for improving audit quality by means of enforcement action
Short Term Effect and Safety of Antidiuretic Hormone in the Patients with Nocturia
Purpose To investigate the short-term safety of antidiuretic hormone in elderly patients with nocturnal polyuria, focus on hyponatremia and others electrolytes disturbances and to assess short-term effects on nocturnal urine output and number of nocturnal voids. Methods Between June 2005 and August 2006, a total of 34 patients with nocturnal polyuria were orally administered 0.2 mg desmopressin tablet at bedtime for two weeks. Serum sodium, others electrolytes, urine sodium and urine osmolarity were assessed in the third days, one week and two weeks after treatment with desmopressin and compared adult group (<65 years of age) with elderly group (â„65 years of age). We assessed the effect of desmopressin using a frequency-volume charts and analysed. Results In total 34 patients (20 adult, 14 elderly) were analyzed. Desmopressin treatment did not significantly change serum and urine electrolytes include soduim concentration in elderly patients comparied with adult patients. Serum sodium concentration below normal range was recorded in 2 patients in elderly group, but no serious adverse events occurred and recovered without sequelae. The mean number of nocturnal voids decresed (54% reduction) and nocturnal urine output decreased (57% reduction) after using desmopressin. Conclusions Desmopressin was well tolerated and effective in elderly patients with nocturnal polyuria without clinically significant hyponatremia
Wound-induced PAL activity is suppressed by heat-shock treatments that induce the synthesis of heat-shock proteins
Wounding lettuce leaves induces the de novo synthesis of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL, EC 4.3.1.5), the accumulation of phenolic compounds, and subsequent tissue browning. A brief heat-shock at 45 C reduces the rise in wound-induced PAL, the accumulation of phenolic compounds, and tissue browning. The activity of PAL measured 24 h after wounding and the content of phenolic compounds (absorbance of methanol extract at 320 nm) measured 48 h after wounding was highly correlated (R 2 > 0.90) in tissue developing the normal wound response and in tissue subjected to 0-180 s of heat-shock after wounding. The synthesis of a unique set of proteins called heat-shock proteins (hsps) is induced by these heat-shock treatments. Western-blot analyses of proteins isolated from wounded and heat-shocked Iceberg and Romaine lettuce mid-rib leaf tissue was done using antibodies against hsp 23. Only those heat-shock treatments that were effective at inducing the synthesis of hsp 23 were effective in reducing the activity of PAL induced by wounding and the subsequent accumulation of phenolic compounds. Hsps induced in non-wounded, whole leaves by exposure to 45 C for 150 s did not significantly interact with PAL previously synthesized in non-heat-shocked wounded leaves to limit its activity. The preferential synthesis of hsps over that of wound-induced PAL, rather than the presence of hsps, may be responsible for the ability of a heat-shock treatment to reduce the woundinduced increase in PAL activity. Our results support this novel concept, and the possibility that heat-shock treatments can have significant physiological effects on the response of the tissue to other stresses, not because of the specific genes they induce or repress, or the products they cause to be synthesized, but by their secondary action of influencing the synthesis of other proteins (e.g. PAL) by the suppression of non-hsps protein synthesis
Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in a community-based population : a potential role in adult-onset asthma
Background: Recent studies suggest that Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin sensitization is a risk factor for asthma. However, there is a paucity of epidemiologic evidence on adult-onset asthma in community-based populations.
Objective: We sought to evaluate the epidemiology and the clinical significance of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in community-based adult populations.
Methods: The present analyses were performed using the baseline data set of Korean adult population surveys, consisting of 1080 adults (mean age=60.2years) recruited from an urban and a rural community. Questionnaires, methacholine challenge tests, and allergen skin tests were performed for defining clinical phenotypes. Sera were analysed for total IgE and enterotoxin-specific IgE using ImmunoCAP.
Results: Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization (0.35kU/L) had a prevalence of 27.0%. Risk factors were identified as male sex, current smoking, advanced age (61years), and inhalant allergen sensitization. Current asthma was mostly adult onset (18years old) and showed independent associations with high enterotoxin-specific IgE levels in multivariate logistic regression tests. In multivariate linear regressions, staphylococcal enterotoxin-specific IgE level was identified as the major determinant factor for total IgE level.
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization was independently associated with adult-onset asthma in adult community populations. Strong correlations between the enterotoxin-specific IgE and total IgE levels support the clinical significance. The present findings warrant further studies for the precise roles of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in the asthma pathogenesis
Iron, Iodine and Selenium Effects on Quality, Shelf Life and Microbial Activity of Cherry Tomatoes
Tomatoes have high nutritional and economical value and its deterioration start after harvest. They need proper treatments to increase and maintain quality as well as shelf life. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of iron, iodine and selenium on quality, shelf life and microbial activity of cherry tomatoes. Iron (1 mg/L), iodine (1 mg/L) and selenium (1 mg/L) were supplied with nutrient solution for five weeks prior to harvest. Then, cherry tomatoes were stored at  5 °C to assess quality, shelf life and microbial activity. The highest Ca content (p < 0.05) revealed in selenium-treated cherry tomatoes. Lower respiration and ethylene production were showed in selenium-treated cherry tomatoes both harvest time and after storage compared with iron and iodine treatments. At harvest time and after storage, the respiration were 1.29 (p < 0.05) and 0.62 mL/kg/hr (p < 0.01), respectively in selenium-treated cherry tomatoes. Moreover at harvest time and after storage in selenium-treated cherry tomatoes, the ethylene production was 2.11 and 0.87 ÎŒL/kg/hr (p < 0.01), respectively. The lowest fresh weight loss, the longest shelf life (p < 0.01), the least fungal incidence rate and microbial activities were found in selenium-treated cherry tomatoes. The longest shelf life of selenium-treated cherry tomatoeswas 22 days. Selenium-treated cherry tomatoesâ firmness increased (16.82N) at harvest time (p < 0.05) and it was significantly retained (12.70N) after storage (p < 0.01). Color development and lycopene content were more suppressed by selenium treatment after storage than iron and iodine treatments. Titratable acidity, vitamin C and soluble solids increased in selenium-treated cherry tomatoes after storage. Based on results, selenium-treated cherry tomatoes have significant potential to increase and maintain quality and shelf life
