    Comparison of average stress drop measures for ruptures with heterogeneous stress change and implications for earthquake physics

    Stress drop, a measure of static stress change in earthquakes, is the subject of numerous investigations. Stress drop in an earthquake is likely to be spatially varying over the fault, creating a stress drop distribution. Representing this spatial distribution by a single number, as commonly done, implies averaging in space. In this study, we investigate similarities and differences between three different averages of the stress drop distribution used in earthquake studies. The first one, Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M, is the commonly estimated stress drop based on the seismic moment and fault geometry/dimensions. It is known that Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M corresponds to averaging the stress drop distribution with the slip distribution due to uniform stress drop as the weighting function. The second one, Δσ¯¯¯¯¯A, is the simplest (unweighted) average of the stress drop distribution over the fault, equal to the difference between the average stress levels on the fault before and after an earthquake. The third one, Δσ¯¯¯¯¯E, enters discussions of energy partitioning and radiation efficiency; we show that it corresponds to averaging the stress drop distribution with the actual final slip at each point as the weighting function. The three averages, Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M, Δσ¯¯¯¯¯A, and Δσ¯¯¯¯¯E, are often used interchangeably in earthquake studies and simply called ‘stress drop’. Yet they are equal to each other only for ruptures with spatially uniform stress drop, which results in an elliptical slip distribution for a circular rupture. Indeed, we find that other relatively simple slip shapes—such as triangular, trapezoidal or sinusoidal—already result in stress drop distributions with notable differences between Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M, Δσ¯¯¯¯¯A, and Δσ¯¯¯¯¯E. Introduction of spatial slip heterogeneity results in further systematic differences between them, with Δσ¯¯¯¯¯E always being larger than Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M, a fact that we have proven theoretically, and Δσ¯¯¯¯¯A almost always being the smallest. In particular, the value of the energy-related Δσ¯¯¯¯¯E significantly increases in comparison to the moment-based Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M with increasing roughness of the slip distribution over the fault. Previous studies used Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M in place of Δσ¯¯¯¯¯E in computing the radiation ratio ηR that compares the radiated energy in earthquakes to a characteristic part of their strain energy change. Typical values of ηR for large earthquakes were found to be from 0.25 to 1. Our finding that Δσ¯¯¯¯¯E≥Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M allows us to interpret the values of ηR as the upper bound. We determine the restrictions placed by such estimates on the evolution of stress with slip at the earthquake source. We also find that Δσ¯¯¯¯¯E can be approximated by Δσ¯¯¯¯¯M if the latter is computed based on a reduced rupture area

    Total arterial revascularization with composite skeletonized gastroepiploic artery graft in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting

    AbstractBackgroundTotal arterial revascularization in coronary artery bypass grafting has recently become of great interest to many surgeons. At the same time, off-pump coronary bypass grafting has also become a popular procedure because of its low morbidity and mortality. Here we report our recent series of off-pump coronary bypass grafting performed with a grafting technique we developed by using the skeletonized gastroepiploic artery and the radial artery composite graft to achieve total arterial revascularization.MethodsFrom September 2000 to April 2003, 98 patients underwent total arterial revascularization with the skeletonized gastroepiploic artery and radial artery composite graft on the beating heart. We used the gastroepiploic artery graft of choice in patients with a right coronary artery lesion. When multiple grafting was required in inferior, posterolateral, or lateral ventricular walls and the gastroepiploic artery graft was too short to cover these areas, we used the composite grafting technique.ResultsThere were no in-hospital deaths and there was no severe morbidity among the study patients. Postoperative angiography showed graft occlusion at the anastomosis site between the gastroepiploic and radial arteries. The patency rate of the gastroepiploic arterial composite graft was 98.3% (118/120 distal anastomoses).ConclusionsA composite graft with the skeletonized gastroepiploic artery and the radial artery ensured sufficient caliber size and length for myocardial revascularization on inferior, posterolateral, and lateral ventricular walls. This composite graft can be used safely and effectively even in off-pump coronary bypass surgery with excellent early clinical and angiographic outcome in selected patients, although longer follow-up periods are necessary to draw definitive conclusions

    Retrogenes in Rice (Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica) Exhibit Correlated Expression with Their Source Genes

    Gene duplication occurs by either DNA- or RNA-based processes; the latter duplicates single genes via retroposition of messenger RNA. The expression of a retroposed gene copy (retrocopy) is expected to be uncorrelated with its source gene because upstream promoter regions are usually not part of the retroposition process. In contrast, DNA-based duplication often encompasses both the coding and the intergenic (promoter) regions; hence, expression is often correlated, at least initially, between DNA-based duplicates. In this study, we identified 150 retrocopies in rice (Oryza sativa L. ssp japonica), most of which represent ancient retroposition events. We measured their expression from high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNAseq) data generated from seven tissues. At least 66% of the retrocopies were expressed but at lower levels than their source genes. However, the tissue specificity of retrogenes was similar to their source genes, and expression between retrocopies and source genes was correlated across tissues. The level of correlation was similar between RNA- and DNA-based duplicates, and they decreased over time at statistically indistinguishable rates. We extended these observations to previously identified retrocopies in Arabidopsis thaliana, suggesting they may be general features of the process of retention of plant retrogenes

    Feminizing Wolbachia endosymbiont disrupts maternal sex chromosome inheritance in a butterfly species

    Wolbachia is a maternally inherited ubiquitous endosymbiotic bacterium of arthropods that displays a diverse repertoire of host reproductive manipulations. For the first time, we demonstrate that Wolbachia manipulates sex chromosome inheritance in a sexually reproducing insect. Eurema mandarina butterfly females on Tanegashima Island, Japan, are infected with the wFem Wolbachia strain and produce all‐female offspring, while antibiotic treatment results in male offspring. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) revealed that wFem‐positive and wFem‐negative females have Z0 and WZ sex chromosome sets, respectively, demonstrating the predicted absence of the W chromosome in wFem‐infected lineages. Genomic quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis showed that wFem‐positive females lay only Z0 eggs that carry a paternal Z, whereas females from lineages that are naturally wFem‐negative lay both WZ and ZZ eggs. In contrast, antibiotic treatment of adult wFem females resulted in the production of Z0 and ZZ eggs, suggesting that this Wolbachia strain can disrupt the maternal inheritance of Z chromosomes. Moreover, most male offspring produced by antibiotic‐treated wFem females had a ZZ karyotype, implying reduced survival of Z0 individuals in the absence of feminizing effects of Wolbachia. Antibiotic treatment of wFem‐infected larvae induced male‐specific splicing of the doublesex (dsx) gene transcript, causing an intersex phenotype. Thus, the absence of the female‐determining W chromosome in Z0 individuals is functionally compensated by Wolbachia‐mediated conversion of sex determination. We discuss how Wolbachia may manipulate the host chromosome inheritance and that Wolbachia may have acquired this coordinated dual mode of reproductive manipulation first by the evolution of female‐determining function and then cytoplasmically induced disruption of sex chromosome inheritance

    Comprehensive Sequence Analysis of 24,783 Barley Full-Length cDNAs Derived from 12 Clone Libraries

    Full-length cDNA (FLcDNA) libraries consisting of 172,000 clones were constructed from a two-row malting barley cultivar (Hordeum vulgare 'Haruna Nijo') under normal and stressed conditions. After sequencing the clones from both ends and clustering the sequences, a total of 24,783 complete sequences were produced. By removing duplicates between these and publicly available sequences, 22,651 representative sequences were obtained: 17,773 were novel barley FLcDNAs, and 1,699 were barley specific. Highly conserved genes were found in the barley FLcDNA sequences for 721 of 881 rice (Oryza sativa) trait genes with 50% or greater identity. These FLcDNA resources from our Haruna Nijo cDNA libraries and the full-length sequences of representative clones will improve our understanding of the biological functions of genes in barley, which is the cereal crop with the fourth highest production in the world, and will provide a powerful tool for annotating the barley genome sequences that will become available in the near future

To improve wheat quality and productivity, the genomic sequence of wheat must be determined. The large genome size (∼17 Gb/1 C) and the hexaploid status of wheat have hampered the genome sequencing of wheat. However, flow sorting of individual chromosomes has allowed us to purify and separately shotgun-sequence a pair of telocentric chromosomes. Here, we describe a result from the survey sequencing of wheat chromosome 6B (914 Mb/1 C) using massively parallel 454 pyrosequencing. From the 4.94 and 5.51 Gb shotgun sequence data from the two chromosome arms of 6BS and 6BL, 235 and 273 Mb sequences were assembled to cover ∼55.6 and 54.9% of the total genomic regions, respectively. Repetitive sequences composed 77 and 86% of the assembled sequences on 6BS and 6BL, respectively. Within the assembled sequences, we predicted a total of 4798 non-repetitive gene loci with the evidence of expression from the wheat transcriptome data. The numbers and chromosomal distribution patterns of the genes for tRNAs and microRNAs in wheat 6B were investigated, and the results suggested a significant involvement of DNA transposon diffusion in the evolution of these non-protein-coding RNA genes. A comparative analysis of the genomic sequences of wheat 6B and monocot plants clearly indicated the evolutionary conservation of gene contents

    Ferromagnetism in multi--band Hubbard models: From weak to strong Coulomb repulsion

    We propose a new mechanism which can lead to ferromagnetism in Hubbard models containing triangles with different on-site energies. It is based on an effective Hamiltonian that we derive in the strong coupling limit. Considering a one-dimensional realization of the model, we show that in the quarter-filled, insulating case the ground-state is actually ferromagnetic in a very large parameter range going from Tasaki's flat-band limit to the strong coupling limit of the effective Hamiltonian. This result has been obtained using a variety of analytical and numerical techniques.
