    TesisLa intoxicación con plomo es un problema de trascendental importancia para la salud pública por sus efectos en la calidad de vida de las personas, particularmente de los niños expuestos. La presente investigación fue de tipo descriptivo transversal y se realizó con la finalidad de determinar los niveles de plomo sanguíneo en los habitantes del Centro Poblado de Taca, durante los meses de junio y julio de 2013. Participaron del estudio 42 personas voluntarias: 32 varones y 10 mujeres, cuya media de edad fue de 33,23 años (rango: 21-72 años). Se tomaron muestras de sangre mediante venopunción previo consentimiento informado, utilizando tubos al vacío con anticoagulante, se mantuvieron bajo refrigeración a 8 °C, se trataron con mezcla sulfonítrica - ácido nítrico concentrado a ebullición lenta en un equipo de digestión y luego leídas en un espectrofotómetro de absorción atómica Thermo Scientific ¡CE 3300 a 217 nm. Se obtuvieron los siguientes resultados: todos los sujetos estudiados presentan algún grado de contaminación con plomo, encontrándose un nivel de plumbemia medio de 26,62 ug/dl y los niveles de plomo en sangre de varones y mujeres de 18 a 72 años de edad, encontrándose medias de 33,96 y 3,16 ug/dl, respectivamente, existiendo relación entre el género y plumbemia (p<0,05). El nivel de plomo en sangre de los habitantes del Centro Poblado de Taca, Distrito Canaria, Provincia de Víctor Fajardo, se incrementa en función del tiempo de residencia, por lo que existe relación entre estas dos variables (P<0,05)

    Development of a multi-modal tactile force sensing system for deep-sea applications

    With the increasing demand for autonomy in robotic systems, there is a rising need for sensory data sensed via different modalities. In this way system states and the aspects of unstructured environments can be assessed in the most detailed fashion possible, thus providing a basis for making decisions regarding the robotâ s task. Com- pared to other sensing modalities, the sense of touch is underrepresented in todayâ s robots. That is where this thesis comes in. A tactile sensing system is developed that combines several modalities of contact sensing. The use of the tactile sense in robotic grippers is of great relevance especially for robotic systems in the deep sea. Up to now manipulation systems in master-slave control mode have been used in this area of application. An operator performing the manipulation task has to rely on visual feedback coming from cameras.     The impact of childhood vaccines on bacterial carriage in the nasopharynx: a longitudinal study.

    BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that childhood vaccines have effects that extend beyond their target disease. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of routine childhood vaccines on bacterial carriage in the nasopharynx. METHODS: A cohort of children from rural Gambia was recruited at birth and followed up for one year. Nasopharyngeal swabs were taken immediately after birth, every two weeks for the first six months and then every other month. The presence of bacteria in the nasopharynx (Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus) was compared before and after the administration of DTP-Hib-HepB and measles-yellow fever vaccines. RESULTS: A total of 1,779 nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from 136 children for whom vaccination data were available. The prevalence of bacterial carriage was high: 82.2% S. pneumoniae, 30.6%, S.aureus, 27.8% H. influenzae. Carriage of H. influenzae (OR = 0.36; 95% CI: 0.13, 0.99) and S. pneumoniae (OR = 0.25; 95% CI: 0.07, 0.90) were significantly reduced after measles-yellow fever vaccination; while DTP-Hib-HepB had no effect on bacterial carriage. CONCLUSIONS: Nasopharyngeal bacterial carriage is unaffected by DTP-Hib-HepB vaccination and reduced after measles-yellow fever vaccination

    1993 führte der Bund ökologische Direktzahlungen ein; seit 1999 ist die Erbringung des ökologischen Leistungsnachweises (ÖLN) durch die Landwirtschaftsbetriebe die Voraussetzung zum Bezug von Direktzahlungen. Heute werden 97 % der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzfläche nach den Regeln des ÖLN bewirtschaftet. Die wichtigste Massnahme des ÖLN, welche einen Einfluss auf die Biodiversität hat, ist, dass die Betriebe 7 % ihrer landwirtschaftlichen Nutzfläche (LN) als ökologische Ausgleichsflächen (öAF) auszuweisen haben (bei Spezialkulturen 3,5 %). Weitere Anforderungen des ÖLN (ausgeglichene Nährstoffbilanz, geregelte Fruchtfolge, Bodenschutz, gezielter Einsatz von Pflanzenschutzmitteln, tiergerechte Haltung der Nutztiere) können ebenfalls einen Einfluss haben, stehen jedoch weniger im Vordergrund

    The UTCI-Fiala mathematical model of human temperature regulation forms the basis of the new Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTC). Following extensive validation tests, adaptations and extensions, such as the inclusion of an adaptive clothing model, the model was used to predict human temperature and regulatory responses for combinations of the prevailing outdoor climate conditions. This paper provides an overview of the underlying algorithms and methods that constitute the multi-node dynamic UTCI-Fiala model of human thermal physiology and comfort. Treated topics include modelling heat and mass transfer within the body, numerical techniques, modelling environmental heat exchanges, thermoregulatory reactions of the central nervous system, and perceptual responses. Other contributions of this special issue describe the validation of the UTCI-Fiala model against measured data and the development of the adaptive clothing model for outdoor climates

    Vaccination against infectious diseases has changed the future of the human species, saving millions of lives every year, both children and adults, and providing major benefits to society as a whole. Here we show, however, that national and sub-national coverage of vaccination varies greatly and major unmet needs persist. Although scientific progress opens exciting perspectives in terms of new vaccines, the pathway from discovery to sustainable implementation can be long and difficult, from the financing, development and licensing to programme implementation and public acceptance. Immunization is one of the best investments in health and should remain a priority for research, industry, public health and society

    Meta-analysis identification of highly robust and differential immune-metabolic signatures of systemic host response to acute and latent tuberculosis in children and adults

    Background: Whole blood expression profiling is a mainstay for delineating differential diagnostic signatures of infection yet is subject to high variability that reduces power and complicates clinical usefulness. To date, confirmatory high confidence expression profiling signatures for clinical use remain uncertain. Here we have sought to evaluate the reproducibility and confirmatory nature of differential expression signatures, comprising molecular and cellular pathways, across multiple international clinical observational studies investigating children and adult whole blood transcriptome responses to tuberculosis (TB). Methods and findings: A systematic search and quality control assessment of gene expression repositories for human TB using whole blood resulted in 11 datasets with a total of 1073 patients from Africa, Europe, and South America. A non-parametric estimation of percentage of false prediction was used for meta-analysis of high confidence differential expression analysis. Deconvolution analysis was applied to infer changes in immune cell proportions and enrichment tests applied using pathway database resources. Meta-analysis identified high confidence differentially expressed genes, comprising 372 in adult active-TB versus latent-TB (LTBI), 332 in adult active-TB versus controls (CON), five in LTBI versus CON, and 415 in childhood active-TB versus LTBI. Notably, these confirmatory markers have low representation in published signatures for diagnosing TB. Pathway biology analysis of high confidence gene sets revealed dominant metabolic and innate-immune pathway signatures while suppressed signatures were enriched with adaptive signaling pathways and reduced proportions of T and B cells. Childhood TB showed uniquely strong inflammasome antagonist signature (IL1RN and ILR2), while adult TB patients exhibit a significant preponderance type I and type II IFN markers. Key limitations of the study include the paucity of data on potential confounders. Conclusion: Meta-analysis identified high confidence confirmatory immune-metabolic and cellular expression signatures across studies regardless of the population resource setting, HIV status and circulating endemic pathogens. Notably, previously identified diagnostic signature markers for TB show limited concordance with the confirmatory meta-analysis. Overall, our results support the use of the confirmatory expression signatures for guiding optimized diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic monitoring modalities in TB
