Interoperability in Open IoT Platforms: WoT-FIWARE Comparison and Integration

    Get PDF
The rapid and exponential growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has been generating a new breed of technologies that introduce several different protocols and interfaces. The Web of Things (WoT) architecture stands out as an emerging and poten- tial solution to improve interoperability across IoT platforms by describing well-defined software interfaces. However, few studies analyze and compare WoT to other interoperability solutions proposed in the IoT literature. In this paper, we attempt to bridge the gap by three main contributions. First, we qualitative compare the WoT approach with the well-known FIWARE- based interoperability solution.Second, based on the previous analysis, we design and implement a connector to bridge the WoT architecture to the FIWARE ecosystem. Third, we conduct a performance analysis emulating a real IoT-based environment to understand scalability, response time, and computer resource usage of the two interoperability solutions. The results reveal that conceptual design choices impact the applications’ performance: the WoT architecture effectively enables interoperability across IoT Platforms, though it incorporates several characteristics that hinder the implementation of applications. On the other hand, the FIWARE IoT Agent solution is platform-specific. Hence new implementations are needed for each different IoT data model

The public acts as a consumer of social services, not involved in the implementation processes. As a result, the efforts and costs of the state acquire low efficiency. The local population, already initially, is limited and remotely to the system of providing social services. Unrealized social expectations of the population accumulate, which can lead to the risk of social instability. The processes of rethinking the way of life in the city were launched, thanks to the urban territorial communities. People's demands for the quality of the urban environment have increased. The population began to uphold the right to affordable and quality housing, to comfortable yards and streets, to good parkand public gardens. The notion of "comfortable city" has become a trend in different regions

MAESTRI Toolkit for Industrial Symbiosis: overview, lessons learnt and implications

    Get PDF
This paper presents a structured approach to support the development of self-organized industrial symbiosis, the Toolkit for Industrial Symbiosis. Developed within MAESTRI project, it provides a set of tools and methods to help companies gain value from wasted resources and contributes to MAESTRI goal of advancing the sustainability of European manufacturing and process industry. A participatory approach was taken for its development. The ultimate objective of this work is to encourage companies to change their attitude and consider waste as a resource and potential source for value creation

Pharmaceutical Creep: U.S. Military Power and the Global and Transnational Mobility of Psychopharmaceuticals

    Get PDF
In 2006, the United States Department of Defense developed for the first time official criteria for the use of psychopharmaceuticals “in theater”—in the physical and tactical spaces of military operations including active combat. Based on fieldwork with Army soldiers and veterans, this article explores the transnational and global dimensions of military psychopharmaceutical use in the post‐9/11 wars. I consider the spatial, material, and symbolic dimensions of what I call “pharmaceutical creep”—the slow drift of psychopharmaceuticals from the civilian world into theater and into the military corporate body. While pharmaceutical creep is managed by the U.S. military as a problem of gatekeeping and of supply and provisioning, medications can appear as the solution to recruitment and performance problems once in theater. Drawing on soldiers’ accounts of medication use, I illuminate the possibilities, but also the frictions, that arise when routine psychopharmaceuticals are remade into technologies of global counterinsurgency

Profiling Service Function Chaining Behavior for NFV Orchestration

    No full text
The concepts of Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) have promoted network chaining, or Service Function Chain (SFC), quickly and simply. In dynamic infrastructure scenarios, the management of SFC introduces challenges both for the connection of these elements and for understanding their behavior when automatic elasticity is required. Currently, most existing approaches have addressed this challenge with probabilistic heuristics or AI-based techniques, considering only static management. This paper presents an approach for profiling SFC that can be used for predictive NFV orchestration purposes. We conducted a performance evaluation study based on testbed experimentation and queueing modeling. Our results confirm that an analytical model can be used for managing SFC orchestration, not only as a validation technique for NFV, but also as a heuristic for predictive resource allocation in production environments

Time–activity budgets and site selection of White-headed Ducks Oxyura leucocephala at Burdur Lake, Turkey in late winter

    No full text
Diurnal and nocturnal time—activity budgets were compiled for White-headed Ducks at their most important wintering area, Burdur Lake in Turkey, during February and March 1993. During the day, ducks spent 28% of the time feeding, 57% resting, 11% in locomotion, 4% preening and 1% in alert behaviour. No courtship behaviour was observed. Resting peaked in the middle of the day. As wave-height increased, feeding and swimming increased and resting decreased. At night, 92% of time was spent feeding. Sites used by White-headed Ducks held a higher biomass of food items (benthic chironomid larvae) than other parts of the lake. Movement of individuals and marked differences in diurnal time budgets occurred between sites, as birds concentrated in flocks for resting and dispersed to feed. The proportion of birds resting increased with the number of birds present, both within and between sites. Feeding was concentrated at those sites supporting a higher biomass of chironomids for a given depth.Peer reviewe
