    Adsorption of CO on NaZSM-5 zeolite under moderate temperature and pressure conditions: an FTIR investigation

    Adsorption of CO on NaZSM-5 zeolite was investigated at temperatures in the range 300-470 K and at pressures of 5-500 Torr using FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of exchanging the charge balancing cation in NaZSM-5 with a proton or calcium was evaluated. Data were also collected on NaY, CaY and CaX zeolites for comparison. We detected the development of six distinct CwO stretching bands with maxima at around 2111, 2130, 2146, 2160, 2176 and 2194 cm-1 during the adsorption of CO on NaZSM-5 zeolite at ambient temperatures. This was accompanied by the appearance of a prominent band at 2356 cm-1 and weak shoulder bands at frequencies around 2336, 2340, 2370 and 2380 cm-1 in the ν3 region of All the ν(CO) bands and CO2 . also the bands in the ν3 region of CO2 exhibited similar behaviour as a function of adsorbate pressure, evacuation, rise in sample temperature, and the exchange of charge balancing cation. For instance, the intensity of all the CwO stretching bands showed a similar growth behaviour with increasing adsorbate pressure, though the extent of this growth was di.erent for the individual IR bands. Similarly, these bands were removed simultaneously on evacuation. Furthermore, while all the vibrational bands in the v(CO) region showed a uniform isotopic shift corresponding to a frequency ratio ν(13C/12C) of ca. 0.977 and ν(18O/16O) of 0.976 for the adsorption of 13C16O and 12C18O, respectively, the bands in the ν3(CO2) region showed a red shift ?(13C/12C) of 0.972 with 13CO and an isotopic shift corresponding to 16O12C18O on 12C18O adsorption. No shift in ν(OH) bands was observed after CO adsorption under the conditions of this study. The results thus indicate that the individual zeolitic surface sites e.g., the Al3+ sites, Bronsted acid sites or the charge balancing cations, may not participate directly in the bonding of CO molecules at room temperature or above. Instead, the cage effect of zeolites plays an important role. The data are interpreted to suggest the formation of weakly bonded clusters of CO and CO2 molecules, occluded in the zeolitic cages and stabilized under the cationic field

    INHIBITION OF α-AMYLASE AND α-GLUCOSIDASE BY (6RS)-22-HYDROXY-23,24,25,26,27-PENTANOR-VITAMIN-D3-6,19-SULFUR DIOXIDE-ADDUCT, MANOALIDE AND 5β-CHOLESTANE-3α,7α,12α,24,25,26-HEXOL ISOLATED FROM ACETONE EXTRACT OF HELIANTHUS ANNUUS L. SEEDS

    Objective: This investigation includes characterization of phytochemicals from acetone extract of Helianthus annuus L. seeds responsible for α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition revealed from in vitroand in silico approaches. Methods: Seed extract was qualitatively and quantitatively analysed for the presence of bioactive molecules. In vitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition assays and kinetics studies for α-glucosidase were done. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) autography of extract was done to screen potent inhibitors and characterized by high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HR LC-MS). Characterized molecules were further used for in silico studies. Results: Qualitative investigation reveals the presence of flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, and steroids. Quantitative analysis for total phenolic content and total flavonoid content of the extract was 0.1±0.005 mg/ml GAE and 0.025±0.003 mg/ml QE respectively. Percent inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase ascertained in presence of extract was 60.42±0.6 and 83.22±0.18 at 0.01 mg while 36.24±0.81 and 37.67±0.15 at 0.005 mg of extracts for both enzymes respectively. Kinetics studies of α-glucosidase inhibition illustrated the non-competitive type of inhibition. TLC autography inhibition patterns were characterized by HR LC-MS. Characterized molecules on docking revealed (6RS)-22-hydroxy-23,24,25,26,27-pentanor-vitamin-D3-6,19-sulfurdioxide-adduct, manoalide and 5β-cholestane-3α,7α,12α,24,25,26-hexol as the best docked molecules with lowest binding energies of-12.5,-11 and-10.2 kcal/mol for α-amylase and-14.2,-11 and-11.2 kcal/mol for α-glucosidase respectively. Conclusion: Results clearly suggested that (6RS)-22-hydroxy-23,24,25,26,27-pentanor-vitamin-D3-6,19-sulfurdioxide-adduct, manoalide and 5β-cholestane-3α,7α,12α,24,25,26-hexol could be considered as lead molecules for the discovery of potent antidiabetic agents

    A study on health profile of geriatric population in an urban slum of bijapur

    Background: Advances in medical field have increased the longevity of people by reducing morbidity and mortality to a great extent. With the increase in longevity, problems related to old age have also increased. These problems are more confounded by social factors. Objective: To assess the various health problems faced by elderly people and suggest the remedial measures so that effective preventive and promotive measures can be implemented. Methodology: Community based cross-sectional study of the elderly persons residing in an urban slum of Bijapur. Results: Among acute health problems most common were arthritis (39%) and bronchitis (20.8%). Most common chronic illness observed was respiratory illness 19% (COPD and asthma) fallowed by visual impairment (11.5%), arthritis (11.1%), and hypertension (9.1%) Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) showed that majority of respondents 297 (60%) were having the normal score. Conclusion: The pattern of geriatric health problems have different characteristics and hence require a specific type of screening programme based on the finding of various geriatric health studies

    Biological aspects of spotted seerfish Scomberomorus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) (Scombridae) from north-eastern Arabian Sea

    Spotted seerfish Scomberomorus guttatus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) is one of the highly priced table fishes in India, which contributed 4.7% of all India scombrid fishery with 17,684 t landed in 2014. Its fishery is dominant in the Arabian Sea and northern Arabian Sea contributed 62% to India’s spotted seerfish fishery. Biological information on S. guttatus is scarce and the same was studied during the period 2010-2014 from Maharashtra coast, north-eastern Arabian Sea. A total of 930 specimens (185-550 mm FL) collected from commercial landings were used for the study. Length-weight relation of pooled sexes was estimated as log (W) = -3.1988+2.66074 log (L) (r2 = 0.93). Fishery was dominated by males with the sex ratio of 0.76:1. Relative fecundity ranged from 105-343 eggs g-1 of bodyweight. The length at first maturity (Lm) was estimated to be 410 mm TL for females. Mature and gravid females were dominant in May and August-November. Dietary studies (% IRI) showed dominance of Acetes spp

    A front suspension of Hyundai Elantra 1992 model is assigned as quarter car model and is considered for the performance study. Modeling the dynamic performance of an automobile car system represents a complex task and forms an important step in its design procedure. In this paper the stationary response of quarter car vehicle model moving with a constant velocity over a rough road is considered for the performance study. For this a simplified model and experimental set up is developed. The deterministic impulses due to road profile are given by an eccentric cam which gives input motion to front suspension acting as a follower of the cam. The displacements obtained by FFT analyzer at upper mount of shock absorber were compared with the analytical and MATLAB results

    Evaluation of the protective effect of Paeonia emodi Wall on rat model of Parkinson’s disease induced by 6 hydroxy dopamine

    Background: Generation of reactive oxygen species together with paucity of antioxidant defense is considered as an important cause for dopaminergic neuronal death. Review of literature indicates that none of the drugs so far studied for preventing the PD were found to be promising for use. Therefore, the present study was planned to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of Paeonia emodi Wall (PEW) in 6-hydroxy dopamine induced Parkinson’s disease (PD) model.Methods: The study was conducted on Wistar rats where Parkinson’s disease was induced by producing the striatal 6-hydroxy dopamine lesions. The test animals received ethanolic extract of PEW at dose of 200 and 300mg/kg for 28 days. Circling behavior, spontaneous locomotor activity, muscular coordination and akinesia were studied. Antioxidant levels were assessed by biochemical estimation and histopathology was carried out for dopaminergic neuronal loss.Results: PEW ethanolic extract showed significant dose dependent recovery in number of circlings, line crossing, muscular coordination and akinesia. A significant increase in MDA levels and decreased GSH level in PEW treated groups was observed in test groups as compared to control group (p<0.05). Normal architecture was retained only in PEW 300mg/Kg (p<0.05). L-Dopa did not showed effect on biochemical and histological parameters.Conclusions: The ethanolic extract of PEW showed neuroprotective activity against 6-hydroxy dopamine induced Parkinson’s disease in rats in both 200 and 300mg/kg doses. The protective action of PEW in PD can be because of its ability to reduce the oxidative stress

    Mass mortality of stingrays was observed at Mankeshwar Beach near Kharkhand village, Uran, District Raigad on 22-08-2010. About 100 – 150 fishes were reported to have stranded in rocky embankments of the intertidal zone. These ‘bundh’ like structures of stones are about 1 to 1.5 m in height, which is used by the local fishermen to fix nets to catch fishes during tidal movement. The species was identified as Himantura uarnak, (Forsskål 1775) commonly called ‘Honeycomb sting ray’

    Background: Urbanisation, nuclearisation of family, migration, and dual career families are making care of the elderly more and more of a personal and social problem in India. Objective: Assess the concerns about health issues among elderly people. Methodology: Community based cross-sectional study. Results: 64.4% of the elders were treated well and about 22.9% were treated very well during illness. 86.3% were consulted during illness. Son was the care taker in 55.6% of study subjects. 70.6% of elderly were consulted to allopathic practitioners / Govt Hospitals. Conclusion: It is the responsibility of family to look after elderly in respectful manner, especially during illness. The government should frame policies and provide social and economical security to elders

    Growth Motivation and Well-Being in the U.S., Japan, Guatemala, and India

    The present study examined how the Growth Motivation Index (GMI; J. J. Bauer et al., 2015) related to well-being and identity exploration in samples from the U.S., Japan, Guatemala, and India. The GMI has two facets. GMI-reflective measures the motive to cultivate critical self-reflection and intellectual development, whereas GMI-experiential measures the motive to cultivate personally meaningful activities and relationships. We expected and found that, when comparing the two GMI facets simultaneously, GMI-reflective predicted well-being in countries ranked as having collectivist but not individualist cultures, whereas GMI-experiential predicted well-being in countries ranked as having individualist but not collectivist cultures. GMI-reflective predicted identity exploration across cultures. Implications for growth motivation and culture are discussed
