    Serological diagnosis of pulmonary aspergillosis

    Methods for the preparation of antigens from clinically isolated cultures of Aspergillus were standardized. Sera from 25 suspected cases of pulmonary aspergillosis were tested against antigens prepared by us, from 4 strains of A. fumigatus and one strain of A. flavus, using the Ouchterlony double diffusion and immunoelectrophoretic techniques. Of the 25 sera tested, 18 reacted positively with antigens of A.fumigatus, one with A.flavus and 2 with both these species. Antigens of two non-pathogenic Aspergilli included in the study failed to react with any of the sera. Our antigen preparations gave more numerous as well as sharper precipitin lines than the commercial Bencard antigens which were used for comparison. Moreover, mycelial antigens from 48 to 96 h old cultures revealed precipitin lines comparable to that of the routine, 4 week old culture filtrate antigens, thus suggesting that the incubation period for obtaining antigens could be cut down considerably

    Tachometer is a device that used for counting or for the measuring purpose of the number of revolutions (that is the total number rotations made by the device in unit of measuring time) of an object in unit time. It is expressed in the unit of RPS or RPM, the model uses a set of infrared transducer receiver to count the RPM pulses, and the Arduino microcontroller is used for the implementation of the project. The individual pulses are counted by the microcontroller to give the final output of the RPM

    Ultrasonic Examination of Thin Walled Stainless Steel Tubes by Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique

    The objective of Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is to detect flaws in the components, and characterize them by their size, shape, orientation etc. so that decision on fitness for service of the components can be made. In the case of thin walled tubes, ultrasonic or eddy current examination is generally performed for detection of defects. During the inspection of thin walled stainless steel tubes used in nuclear application, defect indications were obtained by eddy current examination in two of the tubes. From the eddy current examination results, accurate sizing and orientation of these defects could not be determined. Hence a complementary inspection method was required for better characterisation of defects in the two tubes. Even though ultrasonic testing is a most promising technique for detection and characterization of defects, the interpretation of results with A-scan presentation, relies heavily on the skill and experience of the operator performing the test, which comes only by extensive training [1]. This problem is still complicated in the case of thin walled tubes since resolution achievable is poor due to small wall thickness and diameter, and also due to poor signal-to-noise ratio obtainable from fine size defects

    Rendezvous of Heterogeneous Mobile Agents in Edge-weighted Networks

    We introduce a variant of the deterministic rendezvous problem for a pair of heterogeneous agents operating in an undirected graph, which differ in the time they require to traverse particular edges of the graph. Each agent knows the complete topology of the graph and the initial positions of both agents. The agent also knows its own traversal times for all of the edges of the graph, but is unaware of the corresponding traversal times for the other agent. The goal of the agents is to meet on an edge or a node of the graph. In this scenario, we study the time required by the agents to meet, compared to the meeting time TOPTT_{OPT} in the offline scenario in which the agents have complete knowledge about each others speed characteristics. When no additional assumptions are made, we show that rendezvous in our model can be achieved after time O(nTOPT)O(n T_{OPT}) in a nn-node graph, and that such time is essentially in some cases the best possible. However, we prove that the rendezvous time can be reduced to Θ(TOPT)\Theta (T_{OPT}) when the agents are allowed to exchange Θ(n)\Theta(n) bits of information at the start of the rendezvous process. We then show that under some natural assumption about the traversal times of edges, the hardness of the heterogeneous rendezvous problem can be substantially decreased, both in terms of time required for rendezvous without communication, and the communication complexity of achieving rendezvous in time Θ(TOPT)\Theta (T_{OPT})

    Incremental Medians via Online Bidding

    In the k-median problem we are given sets of facilities and customers, and distances between them. For a given set F of facilities, the cost of serving a customer u is the minimum distance between u and a facility in F. The goal is to find a set F of k facilities that minimizes the sum, over all customers, of their service costs. Following Mettu and Plaxton, we study the incremental medians problem, where k is not known in advance, and the algorithm produces a nested sequence of facility sets where the kth set has size k. The algorithm is c-cost-competitive if the cost of each set is at most c times the cost of the optimum set of size k. We give improved incremental algorithms for the metric version: an 8-cost-competitive deterministic algorithm, a 2e ~ 5.44-cost-competitive randomized algorithm, a (24+epsilon)-cost-competitive, poly-time deterministic algorithm, and a (6e+epsilon ~ .31)-cost-competitive, poly-time randomized algorithm. The algorithm is s-size-competitive if the cost of the kth set is at most the minimum cost of any set of size k, and has size at most s k. The optimal size-competitive ratios for this problem are 4 (deterministic) and e (randomized). We present the first poly-time O(log m)-size-approximation algorithm for the offline problem and first poly-time O(log m)-size-competitive algorithm for the incremental problem. Our proofs reduce incremental medians to the following online bidding problem: faced with an unknown threshold T, an algorithm submits "bids" until it submits a bid that is at least the threshold. It pays the sum of all its bids.     Self-assembled nanogel made of mannan : synthesis and characterization

    Amphiphilic mannan (mannan-C16) was synthesized by the Michael addition of hydrophobic 1-hexadecanethiol (C16) to hydroxyethyl methacrylated mannan (mannan-HEMA). Mannan-C16 formed nanosized aggregates in water by selfassembly via the hydrophobic interaction among C16molecules as confirmed by hydrogen nuclearmagnetic resonance (1H NMR), fluorescence spectroscopy, cryo-field emission scanning electron microscopy (cryo-FESEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The mannan-C16 critical aggregation concentration (cac), calculated by fluorescence spectroscopy with Nile red and pyrene, ranged between 0.04 and 0.02mg/mL depending on the polymer degree of substitution ofC16 relative to methacrylated groups. Cryo-FESEM micrographs revealed that mannan-C16 formed irregular spherical macromolecular micelles, in this work designated as nanogels, with diameters ranging between 100 and 500 nm. The influence of the polymer degree of substitution, DSHEMA andDSC16, on the nanogel size and zeta potential was studied byDLS at different pH values and ionic strength and as a function of mannan-C16 and urea concentrations. Under all tested conditions, the nanogel was negatively charged with a zeta potential close to zero. Transport is limited by electron-phonon coupling, resulting in a strongly temperature-dependent electron-optical phonon scattering rate, with significant anisotropy in the scattering process. The experimental findings can be described by Feynman polaron theory within the intermediate coupling regime and allow for a determination of electron mobility

    18S rDNA Phylogeny of Lamproderma and Allied Genera (Stemonitales, Myxomycetes, Amoebozoa)

    The phylogenetic position of the slime-mould genus Lamproderma (Myxomycetes, Amoebozoa) challenges traditional taxonomy: although it displays the typical characters of the order Stemonitales, it appears to be sister to Physarales. This study provides a small subunit (18S or SSU) ribosomal RNA gene-based phylogeny of Lamproderma and its allies, with new sequences from 49 specimens in 12 genera. We found that the order Stemonitales and Lamproderma were both ancestral to Physarales and that Lamproderma constitutes several clades intermingled with species of Diacheopsis, Colloderma and Elaeomyxa. We suggest that these genera may have evolved from Lamproderma by multiple losses of fruiting body stalks and that many taxonomic revisions are needed. We found such high genetic diversity within three Lamproderma species that they probably consist of clusters of sibling species. We discuss the contrasts between genetic and morphological divergence and implications for the morphospecies concept, highlighting the phylogenetically most reliable morphological characters and pointing to others that have been overestimated. In addition, we showed that the first part (∼600 bases) of the SSU rDNA gene is a valuable tool for phylogeny in Myxomycetes, since it displayed sufficient variability to distinguish closely related taxa and never failed to cluster together specimens considered of the same species
