    This article reports on English second language (ESL) students’ experiences of academic writing in a university setting. It draws on the notion of community of practice to explain that it is not sufficient for academic literacy courses to concern themselves only with the questions relating to the development of student academic literacy. Rather they should also be concerned with how students learn in social contexts and what knowledge is included and what knowledge is excluded. Such an orientation is vital because academic writing in the context of the university is more than just the ability to read and write, it is often the basis for the evaluation of students and, as such, becomes a powerful gatekeeper

    Teacher leadership: a survey analysis of KwaZulu-Natal teachers’ perceptions

    The notion of teacher leadership is implicit in official documentation in the South African education system post 1994, which emphasises a move towards a more shared and participatory approach to the practice of leadership and management in schools. The concept of teacher leadership is embedded in a distributed leadership theoretical framing which emphasises that leadership need not be located only in the position of the principal but can be stretched over a range of people who work at different levels in a school. We report on a study in which the perceptions of teachers’ on their understanding and experiences of teacher leadership were explored. The study adopted a survey approach and utilised closed questionnaires to gather data from 1,055 post level-one teachers across a range of schools of diverse contexts in KwaZulu-Natal. We found that while teachers supported the notion of shared leadership and believed they were equipped to lead, their leadership was largely restricted to their classrooms. There was some evidence of teacher leadership amongst teacher colleagues in certain curricular and extra-curricular activities. However, teacher leadership in relation to school-wide and community issues was almost non-existent. We signal two problematics regarding the leadership of school teachers and consider the implication of these for the distribution of leadership, and therefore change, in schools.Keywords: distributed leadership; education leadership; power; schoolmanagement teams; teacher leadership; teacher

    Antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial uropathogens in a South African regional hospital

    Background: Urinary tract infections are common bacterial infections affecting millions worldwide. Although treatment options for urinary tract infections are well established, with ciprofloxacin long considered one of the antibiotics of choice, increasing antibiotic resistance may delay the initiation of appropriate therapy. While this increase in antimicrobial resistance has been demonstrated in multiple studies around the world, there is a dearth of information from developing countries. Objective: This study aimed to describe the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of commonly isolated bacterial uropathogens in a South African hospital. Methods: Antimicrobial susceptibility data of isolates obtained from urine specimens at the RK Khan Hospital, a regional hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, between January 2018 and December 2020 were retrieved from the hospital’s laboratory information system and analysed to determine the differences in resistance rates between the most frequently isolated bacterial uropathogens. Results: Of the 3048 bacterial urinary pathogens isolated between 2018 and 2020, Escherichia coli (1603; 53%) was the most common, followed by Klebsiella spp. (437; 14%). Both E. coli and Klebsiella spp. showed high rates of resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (29.8% and 42.3%) and ciprofloxacin (37.7% and 30.4%). Nitrofurantoin resistance was low among E. coli (6.2%) but high among Klebsiella spp. (61.3%). Conclusion: E. coli and Klebsiella spp. in this study were highly resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and ciprofloxacin, two of the frequently prescribed oral treatment options. What this study adds: This study highlights the importance of regular local antimicrobial resistance surveillance to inform appropriate empiric therapy

    Expression and cellular localization of Na,K-ATPase isoforms in the rat ventral prostate.

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the expression and plasma membrane domain location of isoforms of Na,K-ATPase in the rat ventral prostate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ventral prostate glands from adult male rats were dissected, cryosectioned (7 micro m) and attached to poly-l-lysine coated glass slides. The sections were then fixed in methanol and subjected to indirect immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase procedures using a panel of well-characterized monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies raised against known Na,K-ATPase subunit isoforms. Immunofluorescence micrographs were digitally captured and analysed by image analysis software. RESULTS: There was expression of Na,K-ATPase alpha1, beta1, beta2 and beta3 subunit isoforms in the lateral and basolateral plasma membrane domains of prostatic epithelial cells. The alpha1 isoform was abundant but there was no evidence of alpha2, alpha3 or gamma isoform expression in epithelial cells. The alpha3 isoform was not detected, but there was a relatively low level of alpha2 isoform expression in the smooth muscle and stroma. CONCLUSION: Rat prostate Na,K-ATPase consists of alpha1/beta1, alpha1/beta2 and alpha1/beta3 isoenzymes. These isoform proteins were located in the lateral and basolateral plasma membrane domains of ventral prostatic epithelial cells. The distribution and subcellular localization of Na,K-ATPase is different in rodent and human prostate. Basolateral Na,K-ATPase probably contributes to the establishment of transepithelial ionic gradients that are a prerequisite for the uptake of metabolites by secondary active transport mechanisms and active citrate secretion

    Abstract Introduction: Analyze muscle co-contraction using electromyographic signals, which are normalized to compare individuals, muscles and studies. Maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and peak electrical activity (PEA) during movement are the most widely used forms of normalization. Objective: Compare inter-subject variability and investigate the association between the co-contraction indices of the vastus lateralis and biceps femoris during gait, normalized by MVIC and PEA. Methods: Thirty elderly women, aged 70.33 ± 3.69 years took part. Electrical muscle activity during MVIC and gait was recorded using a Biopac MP100 electromyograph. MVIC was performed in a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer. For normalization, the signals were divided by the Root Mean Square values of MVIC and PEA of gait. Results: The coefficient of variation of non-normalized data was 69.3%, and those normalized by PEA and MVIC were 30.4% and 48.9% respectively. Linear regression analysis resulted in a prediction model: PEA = 0.04 + 0.16 x MVIC. The goodness of fit of the regression model was statistically significant (p=0.02). The confidence interval (95% CI) for the intercept was between 0.02 and 0.29 and for MVIC between 0.03 and 0.06. Conclusions: The data normalized by PEA showed less variation than those normalized by MVIC. A 100% variation in data normalized by MVIC resulted in a 16% variation in data normalized by PEA, while variation in normalization by MVIC accounts for 17% of the variation in normalization by PEA and vice versa

    Caffeine Alters Anaerobic Distribution and Pacing during a 4000-m Cycling Time Trial

    The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of caffeine ingestion on pacing strategy and energy expenditure during a 4000-m cycling time-trial (TT). Eight recreationally-trained male cyclists volunteered and performed a maximal incremental test and a familiarization test on their first and second visits, respectively. On the third and fourth visits, the participants performed a 4000-m cycling TT after ingesting capsules containing either caffeine (5 mg.kg−1 of body weight, CAF) or cellulose (PLA). The tests were applied in a double-blind, randomized, repeated-measures, cross-over design. When compared to PLA, CAF ingestion increased mean power output [219.1±18.6 vs. 232.8±21.4 W; effect size (ES) = 0.60 (95% CI = 0.05 to 1.16), p = 0.034] and reduced the total time [419±13 vs. 409±12 s; ES = −0.71 (95% CI = −0.09 to −1.13), p = 0.026]. Furthermore, anaerobic contribution during the 2200-, 2400-, and 2600-m intervals was significantly greater in CAF than in PLA (p0.05). Similarly, there were no significant differences between CAF and PLA for anaerobic work (26363±7361 vs. 23888±6795 J), aerobic work (68709±2118 vs. 67739±3912 J), or total work (95245±8593 vs. 91789±7709 J), respectively. There was no difference for integrated electromyography, blood lactate concentration, heart rate, and ratings of perceived exertion between the conditions. These results suggest that caffeine increases the anaerobic contribution in the middle of the time trial, resulting in enhanced overall performance
