Probing Density Fluctuations using the FIRST Radio Survey
We use results of angular clustering measurements in 3000 sq. deg's of the
FIRST radio survey to infer information on spatial clustering. Measurements are
compared with CDM-model predictions. Clustering of FIRST sources with optical
ID's in the APM catalog are also investigated. Finally, we outline a

Approaching the Coverability Problem Continuously
The coverability problem for Petri nets plays a central role in the
verification of concurrent shared-memory programs. However, its high
EXPSPACE-complete complexity poses a challenge when encountered in real-world
instances. In this paper, we develop a new approach to this problem which is
primarily based on applying forward coverability in continuous Petri nets as a
pruning criterion inside a backward coverability framework. A cornerstone of
our approach is the efficient encoding of a recently developed polynomial-time
algorithm for reachability in continuous Petri nets into SMT. We demonstrate
the effectiveness of our approach on standard benchmarks from the literature,
which shows that our approach decides significantly more instances than any
existing tool and is in addition often much faster, in particular on large

Genetic diversity and population structure of Ascochyta rabiei from the western Iranian Ilam and Kermanshah provinces using MAT and SSR markers
Knowledge of genetic diversity in A. rabiei provides different levels of information that are important in the management of crop germplasm resources. Gene flow on a regional level indicates a significant potential risk for the regional spread of novel alleles that might contribute to fungicide resistance or the breakdown of resistance genes. Simple sequence repeat (SSR) and mating type (MAT) markers were used to determine the genetic structure, and estimate genetic diversity and the prevalence of mating types in 103 Ascochyta rabiei isolates from seven counties in the Ilam and Kermanshah provinces of western Iran (Ilam, Aseman abad, Holaylan, Chardavol, Dareh shahr, Gilangharb, and Sarpul). A set of 3 microsatellite primer pairs revealed a total of 75 alleles; the number of alleles varied from 15 to 34 for each marker. A high level of genetic variability was observed among A. rabiei isolates in the region. Genetic diversity was high (He = 0.788) within populations with corresponding high average gene flow and low genetic distances between populations. The smallest genetic distance was observed between isolates from Ilam and Chardavol. Both mating types were present in all populations, with the majority of the isolates belonging to Mat1-1 (64%), but within populations the proportions of each mating type were not significantly different from 50%. Results from this study will be useful in breeding for Ascochyta blight-resistant cultivars and developing necessary control measures
Toward High-Precision Measures of Large-Scale Structure
I review some results of estimation of the power spectrum of density
fluctuations from galaxy redshift surveys and discuss advances that may be
possible with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. I then examine the realities of
power spectrum estimation in the presence of Galactic extinction, photometric
errors, galaxy evolution, clustering evolution, and uncertainty about the

Long-term effects of chronic light pollution on seasonal functions of European blackbirds (turdus merula)
Light pollution is known to affect important biological functions of wild animals, including daily and annual cycles. However, knowledge about long-term effects of chronic exposure to artificial light at night is still very limited. Here we present data on reproductive physiology, molt and locomotor activity during two-year cycles of European blackbirds (Turdus merula) exposed to either dark nights or 0.3 lux at night. As expected, control birds kept under dark nights exhibited two regular testicular and testosterone cycles during the two-year experiment. Control urban birds developed testes faster than their control rural conspecifics. Conversely, while in the first year blackbirds exposed to light at night showed a normal but earlier gonadal cycle compared to control birds, during the second year the reproductive system did not develop at all: both testicular size and testosterone concentration were at baseline levels in all birds. In addition, molt sequence in light-treated birds was more irregular than in control birds in both years. Analysis of locomotor activity showed that birds were still synchronized to the underlying light-dark cycle. We suggest that the lack of reproductive activity and irregular molt progression were possibly the results of i) birds being stuck in a photorefractory state and/or ii) chronic stress. Our data show that chronic low intensities of light at night can dramatically affect the reproductive system. Future studies are needed in order to investigate if and how urban animals avoid such negative impact and to elucidate the physiological mechanisms behind these profound long-term effects of artificial light at night. Finally we call for collaboration between scientists and policy makers to limit the impact of light pollution on animals and ecosystems
Individual Eigenvalue Distributions for the Wilson Dirac Operator
We derive the distributions of individual eigenvalues for the Hermitian
Wilson Dirac Operator D5 as well as for real eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac
Operator DW. The framework we provide is valid in the epsilon regime of chiral
perturbation theory for any number of flavours Nf and for non-zero low energy
constants W6, W7, W8. It is given as a perturbative expansion in terms of the
k-point spectral density correlation functions and integrals thereof, which in
some cases reduces to a Fredholm Pfaffian. For the real eigenvalues of DW at
fixed chirality nu this expansion truncates after at most nu terms for small
lattice spacing "a". Explicit examples for the distribution of the first and
second eigenvalue are given in the microscopic domain as a truncated expansion
of the Fredholm Pfaffian for quenched D5, where all k-point densities are
explicitly known from random matrix theory. For the real eigenvalues of
quenched DW at small "a" we illustrate our method by the finite expansion of

Discriminant analysis of intermediate brain atrophy rates in longitudinal diagnosis of alzheimer's disease
Diagnosing Alzheimer's disease through MRI neuroimaging biomarkers has been used as a complementary marker for traditional clinical markers to improve diagnostic accuracy and also help in developing new pharmacotherapeutic trials. It has been revealed that longitudinal analysis of the whole brain atrophy has the power of discriminating Alzheimer's disease and elderly normal controls. In this work, effect of involving intermediate atrophy rates and impact of using uncorrelated principal components of these features instead of original ones on discriminating normal controls and Alzheimer's disease subjects, is inspected. In fact, linear discriminative analysis of atrophy rates is used to classify subjects into Alzheimer's disease and controls. Leave-one-out cross-validation has been adopted to evaluate the generalization rate of the classifier along with its memorization. Results show that incorporating uncorrelated version of intermediate features leads to the same memorization performance as the original ones but higher generalization rate. As a conclusion, it is revealed that in a longitudinal study, using intermediate MRI scans and transferring them to an uncorrelated feature space can improve diagnostic accuracy
