Recent advances in understanding the environmental footprint of trawling on the seabed
Bottom trawling accounts for nearly a quarter of wild-capture seafood production, but it is associated with physical disturbance of the seabed leading to changes in benthic abundance, habitat structure, and biogeochemical processes. Understanding the processes of benthic depletion and recovery in relation to different types of fishing gears, and in different seabed types, is an important pre-requisite to inform appropriate management measures to limit or reduce the effects of trawling on the seabed. The combined approaches of meta-analysis and modelling that link fishing-gear penetration of the seabed to benthic depletion, and recovery to taxon longevity, have enabled the development of a modelling framework to estimate relative benthic status in areas subject to trawling. Such estimations are highly sensitive to the spatial resolution at which fishing footprint (trawl track) data are aggregated, and this leads to overinflated estimates of fishing impacts on benthos when coarse-level aggregation is applied. These approaches present a framework into which other “sustainability” criteria can be added, e.g., the consideration of carbon footprints of fishing activities. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. Noise spectroscopy with large clouds of cold atoms
Noise measurement is a powerful tool to investigate many phenomena from laser
characterization to quantum behavior of light. In this paper, we report on
intensity noise measurements obtained when a laser beam is transmitted through
a large cloud of cold atoms. While this measurement could possibly investigate
complex processes such as the influence of atomic motion, one is first limited
by the conversion of the intrinsic laser frequency noise to intensity noise via
the atomic resonance. This conversion is studied here in details. We show that,
while experimental intensity noise spectra collapse onto the same curve at low
Fourier frequencies, some differences appear at higher frequencies when the
probe beam is detuned from the center of the resonance line. A simple model,
based on a mean-field approach, which corresponds to describing the atomic
cloud by a dielectric susceptibility, is sufficient to understand the main
features. Using this model, the noise spectra allow extracting some
quantitative informations on the laser noise as well as on the atomic sample
Efficient photochemical activity and strong dichroism of single crystals of reaction centers from Rhodopseudomonas viridis
Crystallized reaction centers from Rhodopseudomonas viridis (i) are photochemically active with electron transfer from the special pair to the quinones, (ii) show dichroism giving valuable information on the orientation of the different chromophores and (iii) allow chemical treatment in the crystalline phase
Relative growth and size at onset of sexual maturity of the brown crab, Cancer pagurus in the Isle of Man, Irish Sea

In this study, the relative growth, size–weight relationships and size at onset of maturity of the brown crab Cancer pagurus were investigated in the Isle of Man. For the analyses of relative growth and size at onset of maturity, the samples were collected seasonally between autumn 2012 and spring 2013 using several methods: pot surveys, dredge and trawl surveys, market surveys and shore surveys. Results showed that allometric growth occurred in the chelipeds of males (n = 87) and in the abdomen of females (n = 222). Four different measures of maturity (behavioural, functional, morphometric and physiological) were examined. With respect to the behavioural maturity, the smallest female crab found with a sperm plug measured 110 mm CW, whereas in terms of functional maturity the smallest ovigerous female had a CW of 134 mm. Based on direct observations of gonad maturity, 50% of females were mature at 108 mm CW, whereas 50% of males were mature at 89 mm CW. The size at the onset of maturity measurements of female and male C. pagurus based on gonad development is smaller than the current minimum landing size (130 mm), and therefore this suggests that the current minimum landing size is an adequate management measure.</p
Correlation of structural and spectroscopic properties of a photosynthetic reaction center
Polarized spectra of absorption and light-induced absorbance changes are presented for the crystallized reaction centers of Rhodopseudomonas viridis. We find that a model based on extended dipole interaction between all six pigments is capable of interpreting detailed features such as the contributions from the individual pigments to the various absorption peaks. Even though the pigments are arranged in approximate C2 symmetry, the optical spectra together with the calculations reflect deviations from this symmetry, which may be important in understanding the electron pathway
