The chiral and flavour projection of Dirac-Kahler fermions in the geometric discretization
It is shown that an exact chiral symmetry can be described for Dirac-Kahler
fermions using the two complexes of the geometric discretization. This
principle is extended to describe exact flavour projection and it is shown that
this necessitates the introduction of a new operator and two new structures of
complex. To describe simultaneous chiral and flavour projection, eight
complexes are needed in all and it is shown that projection leaves a single

Fast drift kilometric radio bursts and solar proton events
Initial results of a comparative study of major fast drift kilometric bursts and solar proton events from Sep. 1978 to Feb. 1983 are presented. It was found that only about half of all intense, long duration ( 40 min above 500 sfu) 1 MHz bursts can be associated with F 20 MeV proton events. However, for the subset of such fast drift bursts accompanied by metric Type 2 and/or 4 activity (approximately 40% of the total), the degree of association with 20 MeV events is 80%. For the reverse association, it was found that proton events with J( 20 MeV) 0.01 1 pr cm(-2)s(-1)sr(-1)MeV(-1) were typically (approximately 80% of the time) preceded by intense 1 MHz bursts that exceeded the 500 sfu level for times 20 min (median duration approximately 35 min)
Coronal radiation belts
The magnetic field of the solar corona has a large-scale dipole character,
which maps into the bipolar field in the solar wind. Using standard
representations of the coronal field, we show that high-energy ions can be
trapped stably in these large-scale closed fields. The drift shells that
describe the conservation of the third adiabatic invariant may have complicated
geometries. Particles trapped in these zones would resemble the Van Allen Belts
and could have detectable consequences. We discuss potential sources of trapped
particles
Disease-modifying drug initiation patterns in commercially insured multiple sclerosis patients: a retrospective cohort study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The goal of this research was to compare the demographics, clinical characteristics and treatment patterns for newly diagnosed multiple sclerosis (MS) patients in a commercial managed care population who received disease-modifying drug (DMD) therapy versus those not receiving DMD therapy.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A retrospective cohort study using US administrative healthcare claims identified individuals newly diagnosed with MS (no prior MS diagnosis 12 months prior using ICD-9-CM 340) and ≥ 18 years old during 2001-2007 to characterize them based on demographics, clinical characteristics, and pharmacologic therapy for one year prior to and a minimum of one year post-index. The index date was the first MS diagnosis occurring in the study period. Follow-up of subjects was done by ICD-9-CM code identification and not by actual chart review. Multivariate analyses were conducted to adjust for confounding variables.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Patients were followed for an average of 35.7 ± 17.5 months after their index diagnosis. Forty-three percent (n = 4,462) of incident patients received treatment with at least one of the DMDs during the post-index period. Treated patients were primarily in the younger age categories of 18-44 years of age, with DMD therapy initiated an average of 5.3 ± 9.1 months after the index diagnosis. Once treatment was initiated, 27.7% discontinued DMD therapy after an average of 17.6 ± 14.6 months, and 16.5% had treatment gaps in excess of 60 days.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Nearly 60% of newly-diagnosed MS patients in this commercial managed care population remained untreated while over a quarter of treated patients stopped therapy and one-sixth experienced treatment gaps despite the risk of disease progression or a return of pre-treatment disease activity.</p
Non-encapsulated thermo-liquid crystals for digital particle tracking thermography/velocimetry in microfluidics
The ever accelerating state of technology has powered an increasing interest in heat transfer solutions and process engineering innovations in the microfluidics domain. In order to carry out such developments, reliable heat transfer diagnostic techniques are necessary. Thermo-liquid crystal (TLC) thermography, in combination with particle image velocimetry, has been a widely accepted and commonly used technique for the simultaneous measurement and characterization of temperature and velocity fields in macroscopic fluid flows for several decades. However, low seeding density, volume illumination, and low TLC particle image quality at high magnifications present unsurpassed challenges to its application to three-dimensional flows with microscopic dimensions. In this work, a measurement technique to evaluate the color response of individual non-encapsulated TLC particles is presented. A Shirasu porous glass membrane emulsification approach was used to produce the non-encapsulated TLC particles with a narrow size distribution and a multi-variable calibration procedure, making use of all three RGB and HSI color components, as well as the proper orthogonally decomposed RGB components, was used to achieve unprecedented low uncertainty levels in the temperature estimation of individual particles, opening the door to simultaneous temperature and velocity tracking using 3D velocimetry techniques. © 2012 The Author(s)
Flare magnetic reconnection and relativistic particles in the 2003 October 28 event
An X17.2 solar flare occurred on 2003 October 28, accompanied by
multi-wavelength emissions and a high flux of relativistic particles observed
at 1AU. We present the analytic results of the TRACE, SOHO, RHESSI, ACE, GOES,
hard X-ray (INTEGRAL satellite), radio (Onderejov radio telescope), and neutron
monitor data. It is found that the inferred magnetic reconnection electric
field correlates well with the hard X-ray, gamma-ray, and neutron emission at
the Sun. Thus the flare's magnetic reconnection probably makes a crucial
contribution to the prompt relativistic particles, which could be detected at 1
AU. Since the neutrons were emitted a few minutes before the injection of
protons and electrons, we propose a magnetic-field evolution configuration to
explain this delay. We do not exclude the effect of CME-driven shock, which
probably plays an important role in the delayed gradual phase of solar

Contact Discontinuities in Models of Contact Binaries Undergoing Thermal Relaxation Oscillations
In this paper we pursue the suggestion by Shu, Lubow & Anderson (1979) and
Wang (1995) that contact discontinuity (DSC) may exist in the secondary in the
expansion TRO (thermal relaxation oscillation) state. It is demonstrated that
there is a mass exchange instability in some range of mass ratio for the two
components. We show that the assumption of {\it constant} volume of the
secondary should be relaxed in DSC model. For {\it all} mass ratio the
secondary alway satisfies the condition that no mass flow returns to the
primary through the inner Lagrangian point. The secondary will expand in order
to equilibrate the interaction between the common convective envelope and the
secondary. The contact discontinuity in contact binary undergoing thermal
relaxation does not violate the second law of thermodynamics. The maintaining
condition of contact discontinuity is derived in the time-dependent model. It
is desired to improve the TRO model with the advanced contact discontinuity

A Hubble Space Telescope ACS Search for Brown Dwarf Binaries in the Pleiades Open Cluster
We present the results of a high-resolution imaging survey for brown dwarf
binaries in the Pleiades open cluster. The observations were carried out with
the Advance Camera for Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Our sample
consists of 15 bona-fide brown dwarfs. We confirm 2 binaries and detect their
orbital motion, but we did not resolve any new binary candidates in the
separation range between 5.4AU and 1700AU and masses in the range
0.035--0.065~Msun. Together with the results of our previous study (Martin et
al., 2003), we can derive a visual binary frequency of 13.3\%
for separations greater than 7~AU masses between 0.055--0.065~M_{\sun} and
mass ratios between 0.45--0.91.0. The other observed properties of
Pleiades brown dwarf binaries (distributions of separation and mass ratio)
