    Relationships between synoptic-scale transport and interannual variability of inorganic cations in surface snow at Summit, Greenland: 1992-1996

    To fully utilize the long-term chemical records retrieved from central Greenland ice cores, specific relationships between atmospheric circulation and the variability of chemical species in the records need to be better understood. This research examines associations between the variability of surface snow inorganic cation chemistry at Summit, Greenland (collected during 1992–1996 summer field seasons) and changes in air mass transport pathways and source regions, as well as variations in aerosol source strength. Transport patterns and source regions are determined through 10-day isentropic backward air mass trajectories during a 1 month (late May to late June) common season over the 5 years. Changes in the extent of exposed continental surfaces in source regions are evaluated to estimate aerosol-associated calcium and magnesium ion source strength, while forest fire activity in the circumpolar north is investigated to estimate aerosol ammonium ion source strength. During the 1995 common season, 3 times more calcium and magnesium accumulated in the snowpack than the other study years. Also, an increasing trend of ammonium concentration was noted throughout the 5 years. Anomalous transport pathways and velocities were observed during 1995, which likely contributed to the high levels of calcium and magnesium. Increased forest fire activity in North America was concurrent with increased levels of ammonium and potassium, except for 1996, when ion levels were above average and forest fire activity was below average. Because of the ubiquitous nature of soluble ions, we conclude that it is very difficult to establish a quantitative link between the ion content of snow and firn at Summit and changes in aerosol source regions and source strength

    Optical spectroscopy of complex open 4dd-shell ions Sn7+^{7+}-Sn10+^{10+}

    We analyze the complex level structure of ions with many-valence-electron open [Kr] 4dmd^\textrm{m} sub-shells (m\textrm{m}=7-4) with ab initio calculations based on configuration-interaction many-body perturbation theory (CI+MBPT). Charge-state-resolved optical and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra of Sn7+^{7+}-Sn10+^{10+} ions were obtained using an electron beam ion trap. Semi-empirical spectral fits carried out with the orthogonal parameters technique and Cowan code calculations lead to 90 identifications of magnetic-dipole transitions and the determination of 79 energy ground-configuration levels, questioning some earlier EUV-line assignments. Our results, the most complete data set available to date for these ground configurations, confirm the ab initio predictive power of CI+MBPT calculations for the these complex electronic systems.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    Structure Factor and Electronic Structure of Compressed Liquid Rubidium

    We have applied the quantal hypernetted-chain equations in combination with the Rosenfeld bridge-functional to calculate the atomic and the electronic structure of compressed liquid-rubidium under high pressure (0.2, 2.5, 3.9, and 6.1 GPa); the calculated structure factors are in good agreement with experimental results measured by Tsuji et al. along the melting curve. We found that the Rb-pseudoatom remains under these high pressures almost unchanged with respect to the pseudoatom at room pressure; thus, the effective ion-ion interaction is practically the same for all pressure-values. We observe that all structure factors calculated for this pressure-variation coincide almost into a single curve if wavenumbers are scaled in units of the Wigner-Seitz radius aa although no corresponding scaling feature is observed in the effective ion-ion interaction.This scaling property of the structure factors signifies that the compression in liquid-rubidium is uniform with increasing pressure; in absolute Q-values this means that the first peak-position (Q1Q_1) of the structure factor increases proportionally to V1/3V^{-1/3} (VV being the specific volume per ion), as was experimentally observed by Tsuji et al.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figure

    Optimized random phase approximations for arbitrary reference systems: extremum conditions and thermodynamic consistence

    The optimized random phase approximation (ORPA) for classical liquids is re-examined in the framework of the generating functional approach to the integral equations. We show that the two main variants of the approximation correspond to the addition of the same correction to two different first order approximations of the homogeneous liquid free energy. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to consistently use the ORPA with arbitrary reference systems described by continuous potentials and that the same approximation is equivalent to a particular extremum condition for the corresponding generating functional. Finally, it is possible to enforce the thermodynamic consistence between the thermal and the virial route to the equation of state by requiring the global extremum condition on the generating functional.Comment: 8 pages, RevTe

    The structure of fluid trifluoromethane and methylfluoride

    We present hard X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements on the polar fluorocarbons HCF3 and H3CF under supercritical conditions and for a range of molecular densities spanning about a factor of ten. The Levesque-Weiss-Reatto inversion scheme has been used to deduce the site-site potentials underlying the measured partial pair distribution functions. The orientational correlations between adjacent fluorocarbon molecules -- which are characterized by quite large dipole moments but no tendency to form hydrogen bonds -- are small compared to a highly polar system like fluid hydrogen chloride. In fact, the orientational correlations in HCF3 and H3CF are found to be nearly as small as those of fluid CF4, a fluorocarbon with no dipole moment.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

    Dose-finding study of ibrutinib and venetoclax in relapsed or refractory mantle cell lymphoma

    Relapsed Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is often treated with Bruton\u27s tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKi); however, post-BTKi relapse can be challenging. Adding venetoclax (VEN) to ibrutinib (IBR) has shown synergy in preclinical MCL models. Prior MCL studies of the combination show promising efficacy but have conducted limited dose finding. We sought to identify the optimal dosing combination, based on efficacy and toxicity, utilizing a continual reassessment method of 6 combinations of IBR (280 mg, 420 mg, and 560 mg by mouth daily) and VEN (max dose of 200 mg and 400 mg by mouth daily). Eligible participants were not previously exposed to BTKi and not high risk for tumor lysis syndrome (TLS). VEN, initiated first at 100 mg, then at 20 mg by mouth daily after a TLS event, was started prior to adding IBR and ramped-up based on the dose level assigned. Combination treatment continued for six 28-day cycles. Thirty-five participants were enrolled and treated. One TLS event occurred with starting dose of 100 mg VEN; no TLS was seen with 20 mg. The optimal dosing combination was considered to be VEN 200 mg and IBR 420 mg with an overall response rate (ORR) of 93.8% (95% CI: 73.6% to 99.7%) and DLT incidence of 6.2% (95% CI: 0.3% to 26.4%). ORR for all arms was 82.3% (28/34; 95% CI: 65.5% to 93.2%) with a complete response (CR) rate of 42.4% (14/33; 95% CI: 25.5% to 60.8%). A participant was not allocated to IBR 560 mg and VEN 400 mg. ORR benefit was not seen with higher dosing combinations and toxicity was higher; a comparison made within the limitations of small cohorts. Resistance was seen in nearly all arms.     Density fluctuations and single-particle dynamics in liquid lithium

    The single-particle and collective dynamical properties of liquid lithium have been evaluated at several thermodynamic states near the triple point. This is performed within the framework of mode-coupling theory, using a self-consistent scheme which, starting from the known static structure of the liquid, allows the theoretical calculation of several dynamical properties. Special attention is devoted to several aspects of the single-particle dynamics, which are discussed as a function of the thermodynamic state.     Claimed Co-ethnics and Kin-State Citizenship in Southeastern Europe

    The paper introduces the often neglected concept of 'claimed co-ethnics' in the analysis of citizenship policies. It argues that this is an interstitial category that further complicates the triadic nexus between national minorities, nationalising states and kin-states. The 'claimed co-ethnics' are defined as people who are recognised by the citizenship (or ethnizenship) conferring state as belonging to its main ethnic group, although they themselves do not embrace that definition. In addition to bringing the issue of claimed co-ethnics into focus, the paper elucidates how citizenship policies can affect groups that challenge the exact fit between ethnicity and nation, showing how national governments through particular citizenship policies and categorisation practices engage in the construction of these groups. The paper shows that the triadic nexus framework, which has had a strong influence on citizenship and minorities scholarship, needs to be revised to include unidirectional relations between the elements of the triadic nexus.
