    Communication: Nanosize-induced restructuring of Sn nanoparticles

    Stabilities and structures of β- and α-Sn nanoparticles are studied using density functional theory. Results show that β-Sn nanoparticles are more stable. For both phases of Sn, nanoparticles smaller than 1 nm (∼48 atoms) are amorphous and have a band gap between 0.4 and 0.7 eV. The formation of band gap is found to be due to amorphization. By increasing the size of Sn nanoparticles (1–2.4 nm), the degree of crystallization increases and the band gap decreases. In these cases, structures of the core of nanoparticles are bulk-like, but structures of surfaces on the faces undergo reconstruction. This study suggests a strong size dependence of electronic and atomic structures for Sn nanoparticle anodes in Li-ion batteries

    Stabilization of the γ-Sn phase in tin nanoparticles and nanowires

    Structures of Sn nanoparticles and nanowires are studied using density functional theory in conjunction with thermodynamic considerations. Besides the low-temperature α and room-temperature β phases, the high-temperature γ phase is considered. Results show that at ambient temperatures for sizes smaller than 50 nm, metallic β- and γ-Sn nanoparticles are more stable than semimetallic α-Sn ones because of their lower surface energies. Moreover, very small Sn nanostructures, exemplified by nanowires, are expected to exhibit the γ phase even at 0 K

    Two-Scale Kirchhoff Theory: Comparison of Experimental Observations With Theoretical Prediction

    We introduce a non-perturbative two scale Kirchhoff theory, in the context of light scattering by a rough surface. This is a two scale theory which considers the roughness both in the wavelength scale (small scale) and in the scales much larger than the wavelength of the incident light (large scale). The theory can precisely explain the small peaks which appear at certain scattering angles. These peaks can not be explained by one scale theories. The theory was assessed by calculating the light scattering profiles using the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) images, as well as surface profilometer scans of a rough surface, and comparing the results with experiments.     Roughening of Pt nanoparticles induced by surface-oxide formation

    Using density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamic considerations we studied the equilibrium shape of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) under electrochemical conditions. We found that at very high oxygen coverage, obtained at high electrode potentials, the experimentally-observed tetrahexahedral (THH) NPs consist of high-index (520) faces. Since high-index surfaces often show higher (electro-)chemical activity in comparison to their close-packed counterparts, the THH NPs can be promising candidates for various (electro-) catalytic applications

    Acute kidney injury in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors

    Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated acute kidney injury (ICPi-AKI) has emerged as an important toxicity among patients with cancer. Methods: We collected data on 429 patients with ICPi-AKI and 429 control patients who received ICPis contemporaneously but who did not develop ICPi-AKI from 30 sites in 10 countries. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of ICPi-AKI and its recovery. A multivariable Cox model was used to estimate the effect of ICPi rechallenge versus no rechallenge on survival following ICPi-AKI. Results: ICPi-AKI occurred at a median of 16 weeks (IQR 8-32) following ICPi initiation. Lower baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate, proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use, and extrarenal immune-related adverse events (irAEs) were each associated with a higher risk of ICPi-AKI. Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis was the most common lesion on kidney biopsy (125/151 biopsied patients [82.7%]). Renal recovery occurred in 276 patients (64.3%) at a median of 7 weeks (IQR 3-10) following ICPi-AKI. Treatment with corticosteroids within 14 days following ICPi-AKI diagnosis was associated with higher odds of renal recovery (adjusted OR 2.64; 95% CI 1.58 to 4.41). Among patients treated with corticosteroids, early initiation of corticosteroids (within 3 days of ICPi-AKI) was associated with a higher odds of renal recovery compared with later initiation (more than 3 days following ICPi-AKI) (adjusted OR 2.09; 95% CI 1.16 to 3.79). Of 121 patients rechallenged, 20 (16.5%) developed recurrent ICPi-AKI. There was no difference in survival among patients rechallenged versus those not rechallenged following ICPi-AKI. Conclusions: Patients who developed ICPi-AKI were more likely to have impaired renal function at baseline, use a PPI, and have extrarenal irAEs. Two-thirds of patients had renal recovery following ICPi-AKI. Treatment with corticosteroids was associated with improved renal recovery
