    Learning from Demonstration and Safe Cobotics Using Digital Twins

    The use of collaborative robots, or cobots, is nowadays continually increasing, especially in the small- and medium-sized manufacturing sector. For each particular use case, the integration and deployment of a cobot into a collaborative workspace faces a certain number of challenges. Programming industrial robots, for example, can be a relatively complex and time-consuming task. In this paper we report an accurate method to robot programming by using an optimized “learning from demonstration” technique. The operator/programmer performs in real-time the corresponding task to be automatized, and by means of a tracker sensor the programmer’s motions are captured and transmitted to the robot; the robot registers the trajectories and is now able to reproduce the human movements with high accuracy. Another fundamental issue for cobot deployment is safety. In this paper, we also present a virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) environment to facilitate the design and operation of cobots in order to maximize human safety. The virtual reality environment operates as an aide tool during the design phase. The human operator and the robot’s digital twin work side-by-side while executing a collaborative task in a virtual reality space. Their movements are controlled and registered, and after a given period of test time, the data is analyzed to suggest modifications to ensure a safe workspace (collision free) and to increase productivity. For the regular real-time cobot operation, an augmented reality environment was developed, again, with the purpose of assuring a safe human-robot collaboration. The augmented reality environment keeps tracking permanently the cobot and the human manipulations. This system produces audio and visual alarm signals in unsafe situations and is also able to take actions, such as slowing down or stopping the robot, to preserve the physical integrity of the human operator

    Optical emission of Lix(x=0.2,0.7,1.2)V2O5 has been studied during 5 keV Kr+ ions bombardment. Continuous luminescence was observed in a broad wavelength range between 280 and 340 nm. Generally, the emission intensity was influenced by the quantities of lithium giving rise to transient effects as well as an increase in the line intensity. The experimental results suggest that the continuum emission depends on the nature of surface interaction between lithium and vanadium pentoxide and is very probably related to its electronic structure

    Indicators of patients with major depressive disorder in need of highly specialized care: A systematic review

    Objectives Early identification of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) that cannot be managed by secondary mental health services and who require highly specialized mental healthcare could enhance need-based patient stratification. This, in turn, may reduce the number of treatment steps needed to achieve and sustain an adequate treatment response. The development of a valid tool to identify patients with MDD in need of highly specialized care is hampered by the lack of a comprehensive understanding of indicators that distinguish patients with and without a need for highly specialized MDD care. The aim of this study, therefore, was to systematically review studies on indicators of patients with MDD likely in need of highly specialized care. Methods A structured literature search was performed on the PubMed and PsycINFO databases following PRISMA guidelines. Two reviewers independently assessed study eligibility and determined the quality of the identified studies. Three reviewers independently executed data extraction by using a pre-piloted, standardized extraction form. The resulting indicators were grouped by topical similarity, creating a concise summary of the findings. Results The systematic search of all databases yielded a total of 7,360 references, of which sixteen were eligible for inclusion. The sixteen papers yielded a total of 48 unique indicators. Overall, a more pronounced depression severity, a younger age of onset, a history of prior poor treatment response, psychiatric comorbidity, somatic comorbidity, childhood trauma,psychosocial impairment, older age, and a socioeconomically disadvantaged status were found to be associated with proxies of need for highly specialized MDD care.     Development and psychometric evaluation of the Decision Tool Anxiety Disorders, OCD and PTSD (DTAOP):Facilitating the early detection of patients in need of highly specialized care

    Background: Early identification of patients with an anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in need of highly specialized care could facilitate the selection of the optimal initial treatment in these patients. This paper describes the development and psychometric evaluation of the Decision Tool Anxiety Disorders, OCD and PTSD (DTAOP), which aims to aid clinicians in the early identification of patients with an anxiety disorder, OCD, or PTSD in need of highly specialized mental healthcare. Methods: A systematic literature review and a concept mapping procedure were carried out to inform the development of the DTAOP. To evaluate the psychometric properties of the DTAOP, a cross-sectional study in 454 patients with a DSM-IV-TR anxiety disorder was carried out. Feasibility was evaluated by the completion time and the content clarity of the DTAOP. Inter-rater reliability was assessed in a subsample of 87 patients. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients between the DTAOP and EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) scores were computed to examine the convergent validity. Criterion validity was assessed against independent clinical judgments made by clinicians. Results: The average time required to complete the eight-item DTAOP was 4.6 min and the total DTAOP was evaluated as clear in the majority (93%) of the evaluations. Krippendorff’s alpha estimates ranged from 0.427 to 0.839. Based on the qualitative feedback, item wording and instructions were improved. As hypothesized, the DTAOP correlated negatively with EQ-5D-5L scores. The area under the curve was 0.826 and the cut-off score of >= 4 optimized sensitivity (70%) and specificity (71%). Conclusions: The DTAOP demonstrated excellent feasibility and good validity, but weak inter-rater reliability. Based on the qualitative feedback and reliability estimates, revisions and refinements of the wording and instructions were made, resulting in the final version of the DTAOP

    Gender differences in the implementation of school-based assessment in a Malaysian state

    This study aims to identify the differences in assessment knowledge, school support, teacher readiness, teacher skills and challenges faced by male and female Grade 8 teachers who are involved in implementing School-Based Assessment (SBA) and the interrelationship among these five factors. In addition, this study explores the teachers’ views with regards to these five factors.This study uses a quantitative questionnaire designed by the researchers, and a total of 243 Grade 8 teachers answered the questionnaire.Qualitative data was then collected via semi-structured interviews which were conducted with 20 teachers. The findings show that male teachers are more ready to implement SBA compared to female teachers.Compared to the female teachers, the male teachers view school support as more important. In terms of knowledge, skills and challenges towards the implementation of SBA, there are no gender differences. The findings also show that there exist significant relationships among the five factors except between school support and challenges faced in SBA.Although male and female teachers share many similar views, the predominant view among female teachers when compared to the male teachers is that many challenges and issues need to be addressed in the implementation of SBA. The findings from the interviews also suggest that male teachers are more willing to accept changes when compared to the female teachers.This study has implications for the implementation of SBA in Malaysia because 63% of the teachers implementing SBA are females

    Sentinel network for monitoring in vitro susceptibility of Plasmodium falciparum to antimalarial drugs in Colombia: a proof of concept

    Drug resistance is one of the principal obstacles blocking worldwide malaria control. In Colombia, malaria remains a major public health concern and drug-resistant parasites have been reported. In vitro drug susceptibility assays are a useful tool for monitoring the emergence and spread of drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum. The present study was conducted as a proof of concept for an antimalarial drug resistance surveillance network based on in vitro susceptibility testing in Colombia. Sentinel laboratories were set up in three malaria endemic areas. The enzyme linked immunosorbent assay-histidine rich protein 2 and schizont maturation methods were used to assess the susceptibility of fresh P. falciparum isolates to six antimalarial drugs. This study demonstrates that an antimalarial drug resistance surveillance network based on in vitro methods is feasible in the field with the participation of a research institute, local health institutions and universities. It could also serve as a model for a regional surveillance network. Preliminary susceptibility results showed widespread chloroquine resistance, which was consistent with previous reports for the Pacific region. However, high susceptibility to dihydroartemisinin and lumefantrine compounds, currently used for treatment in the country, was also reported.     World Antimalarial Resistance Network (WARN) II: In vitro antimalarial drug susceptibility

    Intrinsic resistance of Plasmodium falciparum is clearly a major determinant of the clinical failure of antimalarial drugs. However, complex interactions between the host, the parasite and the drug obscure the ability to define parasite drug resistance in vivo. The in vitro antimalarial drug susceptibility assay determines ex-vivo growth of parasite in the presence of serial drug concentrations and, thus, eliminates host effects, such as drug metabolism and immunity. Although the sensitivity of the parasite to various antimalarials provided by such a test provides an important indicator of intrinsic parasite susceptibility, there are fundamental methodological issues that undermine comparison of in vitro susceptibility both between laboratories and within a single laboratory over time. A network of laboratories is proposed that will agree on the basic parameters of the in vitro test and associated measures of quality control. The aim of the network would be to establish baseline values of sensitivity to commonly used antimalarial agents from key regions of the world, and create a global database, linked to clinical, molecular and pharmacology databases, to support active surveillance to monitor temporal trends in parasite susceptibility. Such a network would facilitate the rapid detection of strains with novel antimalarial resistance profiles and investigate suitable alternative treatments with retained efficacy

    Unpublished Mediterranean and Black Sea records of marine alien, cryptogenic, and neonative species

    To enrich spatio-temporal information on the distribution of alien, cryptogenic, and neonative species in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, a collective effort by 173 marine scientists was made to provide unpublished records and make them open access to the scientific community. Through this effort, we collected and harmonized a dataset of 12,649 records. It includes 247 taxa, of which 217 are Animalia, 25 Plantae and 5 Chromista, from 23 countries surrounding the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Chordata was the most abundant taxonomic group, followed by Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Annelida. In terms of species records, Siganus luridus, Siganus rivulatus, Saurida lessepsianus, Pterois miles, Upeneus moluccensis, Charybdis (Archias) longicollis, and Caulerpa cylindracea were the most numerous. The temporal distribution of the records ranges from 1973 to 2022, with 44% of the records in 2020–2021. Lethrinus borbonicus is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, while Pomatoschistus quagga, Caulerpa cylindracea, Grateloupia turuturu, and Misophria pallida are first records for the Black Sea; Kapraunia schneideri is recorded for the second time in the Mediterranean and for the first time in Israel; Prionospio depauperata and Pseudonereis anomala are reported for the first time from the Sea of Marmara. Many first country records are also included, namely: Amathia verticillata (Montenegro), Ampithoe valida (Italy), Antithamnion amphigeneum (Greece), Clavelina oblonga (Tunisia and Slovenia), Dendostrea cf. folium (Syria), Epinephelus fasciatus (Tunisia), Ganonema farinosum (Montenegro), Macrorhynchia philippina (Tunisia), Marenzelleria neglecta (Romania), Paratapes textilis (Tunisia), and Botrylloides diegensis (Tunisia)
