Observational Constraints on the Generalized Chaplygin Gas
In this paper we study a quintessence cosmological model in which the dark
energy component is considered to be the Generalized Chaplygin Gas and the
curvature of the three-geometry is taken into account. Two parameters
characterize this sort of fluid, the and the parameters. We use
different astronomical data for restricting these parameters. It is shown that
the constraint agrees enough well with the astronomical
observations.Comment: Accepted by IJMPD; 18 pages; 10 Figure
Impact of European Integration on the Functioning of the Insurance Market in Poland
The transformation process, that has begun 20 years ago, generated significant changes in the structure and organization of Polish economy. It stimulated development of particular market's segments, especially of the insurance sector. Poland's accession to the European Union required conformity to Its regulations, fulfillment of several conditions connected with the membership in the European Community. The purpose of this article is to present the main consequences of Poland's integration with EU in the field of insurance market. Joining the common market was an important challenge for this sector in our country.Rok 1990 stanowił początek procesu transformacji systemu społeczno - gospodarczego i ustrojowego. Przystąpienie Polski do Unii Europejskiej wymagało wprowadzenia szeregu zmian, dostosowujących polski porządek prawny do uregulowań wspólnotowych regulujących funkcjonowanie rynku ubezpieczeń.
Expansion Thoracoplasty Affects Lung Growth and Morphology in a Rabbit Model: A Pilot Study
Background: Thoracic insufficiency syndrome represents a novel form of postnatal restrictive respiratory disease occurring in children with early-onset scoliosis and chest wall anomalies. Expansion thoracoplasty improves lung volumes in children with thoracic insufficiency syndrome; however, how it affects lung development is unknown. Questions/purposes: Using a rabbit model of thoracic insufficiency syndrome, we evaluated the effect of expansion thoracoplasty on the response of biologic mechanisms in the alveolar microstructure. Methods: Using archived material from a previous experiment, 10 4-week-old New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups: normal (n = 3), disease (n = 3), and treated (n = 4). Left ribs four to eight were tethered in seven rabbits at age 5 weeks to induce hypoplasia of the left hemithorax (disease). At age 10 weeks, four of these rabbits were treated by expansion thoracoplasty (treated). At age 24 weeks, lungs were excised and processed. Alveolar density and parenchymal airspace were measured on histologic sections. Immunohistochemistry was performed for vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (angiogenesis), KI-67 (cell proliferation), and RAM-11 (macrophages). Results: Alveolar walls were poorly perfused and airspace fraction was larger (emphysematous) in disease rabbits than normal or treated rabbits. Immunohistochemistry provided inconclusive evidence to support the concept that pulmonary hypoplasia is induced by thoracic insufficiency syndrome and controlled by expansion thoracoplasty. Conclusions: Treatment of thoracic insufficiency syndrome by expansion thoracoplasty may prevent emphysematous changes in the alveolar microstructure, thereby enhancing gas exchange
Resource acquisition of entrepreneurs: exploring the strategies for collaboration in a business incubator
The lack of resources of young and becoming firms is one of the reasons for the emergence of
business incubators. However, the micro-level processes of collaboration between entrepreneurs
and business incubator staff are still not fully explored in entrepreneurship studies. This study aims
to fill this gap. Business development support is analyzed in terms of entrepreneurial decision-
making about collaboration with BI staff. Our aim is the identification of correlations between
certain resource acquisition strategies and more successful entrepreneurial opportunity
development
Transcriptome and phenotypic analysis reveals Gata3-dependent signalling pathways in murine hair follicles
Abstract
The transcription factor Gata3 is crucially involved in epidermis and hair follicle differentiation. Yet, little is known about how Gata3 co-ordinates stem cell lineage determination in skin, what pathways are involved and how Gata3 differentially regulates distinct cell populations within the hair follicle. Here, we describe a conditional Gata3-/- mouse (K14-Gata3-/-) in which Gata3 is specifically deleted in epidermis and hair follicles. K14-Gata3-/- mice show aberrant postnatal growth and development, delayed hair growth and maintenance, abnormal hair follicle organization and irregular pigmentation. After the first hair cycle, the germinative layer surrounding the dermal papilla was not restored; instead, proliferation was pronounced in basal epidermal cells. Transcriptome analysis of laser-dissected K14-Gata3-/- hair follicles revealed mitosis, epithelial differentiation and the Notch, Wnt and BMP signaling pathways to be significantly overrepresented. Elucidation of these pathways at the RNA and protein levels and physiologic endpoints suggests that Gata3 integrates diverse signaling networks to regulate the balance between hair follicle and epidermal cell fates
Biophysical Measurements of Cells, Microtubules, and DNA with an Atomic Force Microscope
Atomic force microscopes (AFMs) are ubiquitous in research laboratories and
have recently been priced for use in teaching laboratories. Here we review
several AFM platforms (Dimension 3000 by Digital Instruments, EasyScan2 by
Nanosurf, ezAFM by Nanomagnetics, and TKAFM by Thorlabs) and describe various
biophysical experiments that could be done in the teaching laboratory using
these instruments. In particular, we focus on experiments that image biological
materials and quantify biophysical parameters: 1) imaging cells to determine
membrane tension, 2) imaging microtubules to determine their persistence
length, 3) imaging the random walk of DNA molecules to determine their contour
length, and 4) imaging stretched DNA molecules to measure the tensional force.Comment: 29 page preprint, 7 figures, 1 tabl
Observational hints on the Big Bounce
In this paper we study possible observational consequences of the bouncing
cosmology. We consider a model where a phase of inflation is preceded by a
cosmic bounce. While we consider in this paper only that the bounce is due to
loop quantum gravity, most of the results presented here can be applied for
different bouncing cosmologies. We concentrate on the scenario where the scalar
field, as the result of contraction of the universe, is driven from the bottom
of the potential well. The field is amplified, and finally the phase of the
standard slow-roll inflation is realized. Such an evolution modifies the
standard inflationary spectrum of perturbations by the additional oscillations
and damping on the large scales. We extract the parameters of the model from
the observations of the cosmic microwave background radiation. In particular,
the value of inflaton mass is equal to GeV. In
our considerations we base on the seven years of observations made by the WMAP
satellite. We propose the new observational consistency check for the phase of
slow-roll inflation. We investigate the conditions which have to be fulfilled
to make the observations of the Big Bounce effects possible. We translate them
to the requirements on the parameters of the model and then put the
observational constraints on the model. Based on assumption usually made in
loop quantum cosmology, the Barbero-Immirzi parameter was shown to be
constrained by from the cosmological observations. We have
compared the Big Bounce model with the standard Big Bang scenario and showed
that the present observational data is not informative enough to distinguish
these models.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, JHEP3.cl
Nuclear effects on lepton polarization in charged-current quasielastic neutrino scattering
We use a correlated local Fermi gas (LFG) model, which accounts also for long
distance corrections of the RPA type and final-state interactions, to compute
the polarization of the final lepton in charged-current quasielastic neutrino
scattering. The present model has been successfully used in recent studies of
inclusive neutrino nucleus processes and muon capture. We investigate the
relevance of nuclear effects in the particular case of polarization in
tau-neutrino induced reactions for several kinematics of relevance for neutrino
oscillation experiments.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
Molecular detection of thyroglobulin mRNA transcripts in peripheral blood of patients with thyroid disease by RT-PCR
The sensitive detection of circulating tumour cells in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer may precede the detection of relapse by other diagnostic studies – such as serum thyroglobulin – and thus may have important therapeutic and prognostic implications. We performed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on blood samples from patients diagnosed with thyroid disease using two different RT-PCR sensitivities. Additionally, tissue specificity of TG mRNA-expression was determined using RNA extracts from 27 different human tissues. The lower limit of detection was 50–100 TG mRNA producing cells/ml blood using a ‘normal’ RT-PCR sensitivity and 10–20 cells/ml blood using a ‘high’ sensitivity. With the normal sensitivity TG mRNA was detected in 9/13 patients with thyroid cancer and metastasis, 63/137 patients with a history of thyroid cancer and no metastasis, 21/85 with non-malignant thyroid disease and 9/50 controls. With the high sensitivity TG mRNA was detected in 11/13 patients with thyroid cancer and metastasis, 111/137 patients with a history of thyroid cancer and no metastasis, 61/85 with non-malignant thyroid disease and 41/50 controls. Interestingly, using the normal RT-PCR sensitivity TG mRNA transcripts are specific for thyroid tissue and detectable in the peripheral blood of controls and patients with thyroid disease, which correlates with a diagnosis of metastasized thyroid cancer. However, with a high RT-PCR sensitivity, TG mRNA expression was found not to be specific for thyroid tissue and was not correlated with a diagnosis of thyroid cancer in patients. As a consequence, to date TG mRNA detected by RT-PCR in the peripheral blood cannot be recommended as a tumour marker superior to TG serum-level. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
