Verified Double Sided Auctions for Financial Markets

    Get PDF
Double sided auctions are widely used in financial markets to match demand and supply. Prior works on double sided auctions have focused primarily on single quantity trade requests. We extend various notions of double sided auctions to incorporate multiple quantity trade requests and provide fully formalized matching algorithms for double sided auctions with their correctness proofs. We establish new uniqueness theorems that enable automatic detection of violations in an exchange program by comparing its output with that of a verified program. All proofs are formalized in the Coq proof assistant without adding any axiom to the system. We extract verified OCaml and Haskell programs that can be used by the exchanges and the regulators of the financial markets. We demonstrate the practical applicability of our work by running the verified program on real market data from an exchange to automatically check for violations in the exchange algorithm

The alpha 7 nicotinic receptor agonist PHA-543613 hydrochloride inhibits Porphyromonas gingivalis-induced expression of interleukin-8 by oral keratinocytes

Objective: The alpha 7 nicotinic receptor (α7nAChR) is expressed by oral keratinocytes. α7nAChR activation mediates anti-inflammatory responses. The objective of this study was to determine if α7nAChR activation inhibited pathogen-induced interleukin-8 (IL-8) expression by oral keratinocytes.

Materials and methods: Periodontal tissue expression of α7nAChR was determined by real-time PCR. OKF6/TERT-2 oral keratinocytes were exposed to Porphyromonas gingivalis in the presence and absence of a α7nAChR agonist (PHA-543613 hydrochloride) alone or after pre-exposure to a specific α7nAChR antagonist (α-bungarotoxin). Interleukin-8 (IL-8) expression was measured by ELISA and real-time PCR. Phosphorylation of the NF-κB p65 subunit was determined using an NF-κB p65 profiler assay and STAT-3 activation by STAT-3 in-cell ELISA. The release of ACh from oral keratinocytes in response to P. gingivalis lipopolysaccharide was determined using a GeneBLAzer M3 CHO-K1-blacell reporter assay.

Results: Expression of α7nAChR mRNA was elevated in diseased periodontal tissue. PHA-543613 hydrochloride inhibited P. Gingivalis-induced expression of IL-8 at the transcriptional level. This effect was abolished when cells were pre-exposed to a specific α7nAChR antagonist, α-bungarotoxin. PHA-543613 hydrochloride downregulated NF-κB signalling through reduced phosphorylation of the NF-κB p65-subunit. In addition, PHA-543613 hydrochloride promoted STAT-3 signalling by maintenance of phosphorylation. Furthermore, oral keratinocytes upregulated ACh release in response to P. Gingivalis lipopolysaccharide.

Conclusion: These data suggest that α7nAChR plays a role in regulating the innate immune responses of oral keratinocytes.
</p&gt

Time from first presentation in primary care to treatment of symptomatic colorectal cancer:effect on disease stage and survival

BACKGROUND: British 5-year survival from colorectal cancer (CRC) is below the European average, but the reasons are unclear. This study explored if longer provider delays (time from presentation to treatment) were associated with more advanced stage disease at diagnosis and poorer survival. METHODS: Data on 958 people with CRC were linked with the Scottish Cancer Registry, the Scottish Death Registry and the acute hospital discharge (SMR01) dataset. Time from first presentation in primary care to first treatment, disease stage at diagnosis and survival time from date of first presentation in primary care were determined. Logistic regression and Cox survival analyses, both with a restricted cubic spline, were used to model stage and survival, respectively, following sequential adjustment of patient and tumour factors. RESULTS: On univariate analysis, those with <4 weeks from first presentation in primary care to treatment had more advanced disease at diagnosis and the poorest prognosis. Treatment delays between 4 and 34 weeks were associated with earlier stage (with the lowest odds ratio occurring at 20 weeks) and better survival (with the lowest hazard ratio occurring at 16 weeks). Provider delays beyond 34 weeks were associated with more advanced disease at diagnosis, but not increased mortality. Following adjustment for patient, tumour factors, emergency admissions and symptoms and signs, no significant relationship between provider delay and stage at diagnosis or survival from CRC was found. CONCLUSIONS: Although allowing for a nonlinear relationship and important confounders, moderately long provider delays did not impact adversely on cancer outcomes. Delays are undesirable because they cause anxiety; this may be fuelled by government targets and health campaigns stressing the importance of very prompt cancer diagnosis. Our findings should reassure patients. They suggest that a health service's primary emphasis should be on quality and outcomes rather than on time to treatment

A review of silhouette extraction algorithms for use within visual hull pipelines

© 2020, © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. Markerless motion capture would permit the study of human biomechanics in environments where marker-based systems are impractical, e.g. outdoors or underwater. The visual hull tool may enable such data to be recorded, but it requires the accurate detection of the silhouette of the object in multiple camera views. This paper reviews the top-performing algorithms available to date for silhouette extraction, with the visual hull in mind as the downstream application; the rationale is that higher-quality silhouettes would lead to higher-quality visual hulls, and consequently better measurement of movement. This paper is the first attempt in the literature to compare silhouette extraction algorithms that belong to different fields of Computer Vision, namely background subtraction, semantic segmentation, and multi-view segmentation. It was found that several algorithms exist that would be substantial improvements over the silhouette extraction algorithms traditionally used in visual hull pipelines. In particular, FgSegNet v2 (a background subtraction algorithm), DeepLabv3+ JFT (a semantic segmentation algorithm), and Djelouah 2013 (a multi-view segmentation algorithm) are the most accurate and promising methods for the extraction of silhouettes from 2D images to date, and could seamlessly be integrated within a visual hull pipeline for studies of human movement or biomechanics

The Homeodomain Protein Defective Proventriculus Is Essential for Male Accessory Gland Development to Enhance Fecundity in Drosophila

The Drosophila male accessory gland has functions similar to those of the mammalian prostate gland and the seminal vesicle, and secretes accessory gland proteins into the seminal fluid. Each of the two lobes of the accessory gland is composed of two types of binucleate cell: about 1,000 main cells and 40 secondary cells. A well-known accessory gland protein, sex peptide, is secreted from the main cells and induces female postmating response to increase progeny production, whereas little is known about physiological significance of the secondary cells. The homeodomain transcriptional repressor Defective proventriculus (Dve) is strongly expressed in adult secondary cells, and its mutation resulted in loss of secondary cells, mononucleation of main cells, and reduced size of the accessory gland. dve mutant males had low fecundity despite the presence of sex peptide, and failed to induce the female postmating responses of increased egg laying and reduced sexual receptivity. RNAi-mediated dve knockdown males also had low fecundity with normally binucleate main cells. We provide the first evidence that secondary cells are crucial for male fecundity, and also that Dve activity is required for survival of the secondary cells. These findings provide new insights into a mechanism of fertility/fecundity
