The Shifting Origins of International Law

    Get PDF
Both state-centrism and Euro-centrism are under challenge in international law today and this double challenge, this work argues, is being fruitfully mirrored back into the study of the history of international law. It examines, in the first section, the effects of the rise of positivism as a method of norm-identification and the role of methodological nationalism over the study of the history of international law in the modern foundational period of international law. This is extended by an examination of how this bequeathed a double exclusionary bias regarding time and space to the study of the history of international law as well as a reiterative focus on a series of canonical events and authors to the exclusion of others such as those related to the Islamic history of international law. In the second section, the analysis turns to address why this state of historiographical affairs is changing, specifically highlighting intra-disciplinary developments within the field of the history of international law and the effects that the “international turn in the writing of history” is having on the writing of a new history of international law for a global age. The conclusion reflects on some of the tasks ahead by providing a series of historiographical signposts for the history of international law as a field of new research

Common Infrastructure for Finite-State Based Methods and Linguistics Descriptions

    Get PDF
Finite-state methods have been adopted widely in computational morphology and related linguistic applications. To enable efficient development of finite-state based linguistic descriptions, these methods should be a freely available resource for academic language research and the language technology industry. The following needs can be identified: (i) a registry that maps the existing approaches, implementations and descriptions, (ii) managing the incompatibilities of the existing tools, (iii) increasing synergy and complementary functionality of the tools, (iv) persistent availability of the tools used to manipulate the archived descriptions, (v) an archive for free finite-state based tools and linguistic descriptions. Addressing these challenges contributes to building a common research infrastructure for advanced language technology.Peer reviewe

This thesis was done as an assignment to Company X. The objective of this thesis was to survey and document the recruiting process of Company X as a clear and easily readable process diagram to the company’s quality system. The thesis is an operative thesis and it contains the recruitment process of Company X and the thesis report. The writing of the thesis began in spring 2013 and it was returned in April 2014. The theoretical frame of the thesis consists of the literature related to recruiting and quality systems. In the theory part recruitment, recruiting process and its different stag-es, and successful recruitment are examined. In the theory also quality system, EFQM model, its evaluation and development are examined. The product consists of Company X’s recruitment process diagram, connection of re-cruitment process to other areas of the quality system, such as to the human resources process and recruitment process as a whole. In the product shown the maintaining of quality and risk management during the recruitment process
