    High hydrogen content syngas fuel burning in lean premixed spherical flames at elevated pressures: Effects of preferential diffusion

    This study addresses the effects of preferential diffusion on flame structure and propagation of high hydrogen content (HHC) turbulent lean premixed hydrogen-carbon monoxide syngas flames at elevated pressures. The direct numerical simulations with detailed chemistry were performed in three-dimensional domain for expanding spherical flame configuration in a constant pressure combustion chamber. To identify the role of preferential diffusion on flame structure and propagation under low and high turbulence levels at elevated pressure, simulations were performed at an initial turbulent Reynolds number of 15 and 150 at a pressure value of 4 bar. The results demonstrate that the thermo-diffusive instability greatly influences the lean premixed syngas cellular flame structure due to strong preferential diffusion effects under low turbulence level at elevated pressure. In contrast, the results reveal that the thermo-diffusive effects are destabilising and preferential diffusion is overwhelmed by turbulent mixing under high turbulence level at elevated pressure. This finding suggests that the development of cellular flame structure is dominated by turbulence with little or no contribution from the thermo-diffusive instability for the lean premixed syngas flame which operates under conditions of high turbulence and elevated pressures. However, results demonstrate that the flame acceleration and species diffusive flux are still influenced by the preferential diffusion for the lean premixed syngas flame which operates under conditions of high turbulence and elevated pressures

    Direct numerical simulation of turbulent premixed ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen combustion under engine-relevant conditions

    The combustion characteristics of ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen fuel blends under spark-ignited turbulent premixed engine-relevant conditions were investigated by means of direct numerical simulation and detailed chemistry. Several test cases were investigated for an outwardly expanding turbulent premixed flame configuration covering pure ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen fuel blends with 10% and 15% hydrogen content by volume for different equivalence ratio values of 0.9, 1.0 and 1.1. The results showed that the fuel-lean flames exhibit strong wrinkled structures at flame front compared to stoichiometric and fuel-rich flames. The heat release rate plots indicate that adding hydrogen into ammonia improves the reactivity of the flame and enhances the combustion process. The scatter plots of heat release rate versus local curvature coloured by NO formation, show that high heat release rate values occur in the concave structures and low heat release rate values occur in the convex structure, which is consistent with NO distribution. The highest turbulent burning velocity values were found for the fuel-lean cases due to more wrinkled flame front with lower effective Lewis number compared to fuel-rich cases. The results show a bending effect for the ratio between turbulent to laminar burning velocities with respect to hydrogen addition at all equivalence ratios with 10% hydrogen addition into ammonia exhibiting a highest value for the burning velocity ratio. Two distinct flame structures (concave and convex) were analysed in terms of local equivalence ratio based on the elements of N and O as well as H and O. They revealed an opposite distribution of NO formation normal to the flame front within concave and convex structures. Elementary chemical reactions involved in NO formation have shown that hydrogen addition into ammonia influences the reactivity of certain specific chemical reactions

    External Intermittency Simulation in Turbulent Round Jets

    Abstract to study passive scalar mixing and intermittency in turbulent round jets. Both simulation techniques are applied to the case of a low Reynolds number jet with Re between time-averaged results for the scalar field of the low Re case demonstrate reasonable agreement between the DNS and LES, and with experimental data and the predictions of other authors. Scalar probability density functions (pdfs) for this jet derived from the simulations are also in reasonable accord, although the DNS results demonstrate the more rapid influence of scalar intermittency with radial distance in the jet. This is reflected in derived intermittency profiles, with LES generally giving profiles that are too broad compared to equivalent DNS results, with too low a rate of decay with radial distance. In contrast, good agreement is in general found between LES predictions and experimental data for the mixing field, scalar pdfs and external intermittency in the high Reynolds number jet.
