    Capacity and Maximal Inspiratory Pressure in Healthy Adults

    Introduction Diaphragmatic fatigue during maximal exercise causes decreased blood flow to exercising limbs. Inspiratory muscle strength training (IMST) may decrease diaphragm fatigue. Current studies use 50% of maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) for IMST, but optimal dosing at higher intensities has not been well explored. Objective Investigate the impact of high intensity IMST on aerobic capacity and maximal inspiratory pressure in healthy adults. Methods This study was IRB approved by the university. All participants provided informed consent, and demographic information was collected. Results VO2 max did not change significantly in either intervention group after intervention period (p=0.143). Groups demonstrated significant improvement in MIP (p=0.011), but there was no significant difference between groups (p\u3c0.638). Conclusion VO2 max did not significantly change in the control or intervention groups. Post-intervention MIP measurements were significantly improved in both groups, but there was no significant difference between either group. High intensity IMST may not improve aerobic capacity in young, healthy adults after an 8-week intervention period. Clinical Relevance Maintaining diaphragmatic strength with IMST may help minimize respiratory fatigue and be useful for healthy adults with injuries limiting their mobility. Further research is needed to evaluate optimal IMST intensity for maximal benefit as 80% may be too intense

    A study of the effect of feed and ether acidity on the extraction of vanadium and molybdenum from process solutions by ethyl ether is described. Results of batch and continuous extraction tests on the extraction of uranium from process slurries by tributyl phosphate-Gulfspray naphtha are presented, including studies of the effects of feed and scrub acidities on the concurrent extraction of molybdenum. The effect of temperature on the stripping of uranium from tributyl phosphate was studied briefly. Results from fractional precipitation of MgX from dilute sulfuric acid solutions indicate that, in the presence of sufficient iron, phosphate is precipitated as ferric phosphate, and not as uranyl pho sphate.     We prove that a real analytic subset of a torus group that is contained in its image under an expanding endomorphism is a finite union of translates of closed subgroups. This confirms the hyperplane zeros conjecture of Lagarias and Wang for real analytic varieties. Our proof uses real analytic geometry, topological dynamics and Fourier analysis.Comment: 25 page

    Earliest Triassic microbialites in the South China Block and other areas; controls on their growth and distribution

    Earliest Triassic microbialites (ETMs) and inorganic carbonate crystal fans formed after the end-Permian mass extinction (ca. 251.4 Ma) within the basal Triassic Hindeodus parvus conodont zone. ETMs are distinguished from rarer, and more regional, subsequent Triassic microbialites. Large differences in ETMs between northern and southern areas of the South China block suggest geographic provinces, and ETMs are most abundant throughout the equatorial Tethys Ocean with further geographic variation. ETMs occur in shallow-marine shelves in a superanoxic stratified ocean and form the only widespread Phanerozoic microbialites with structures similar to those of the Cambro-Ordovician, and briefly after the latest Ordovician, Late Silurian and Late Devonian extinctions. ETMs disappeared long before the mid-Triassic biotic recovery, but it is not clear why, if they are interpreted as disaster taxa. In general, ETM occurrence suggests that microbially mediated calcification occurred where upwelled carbonate-rich anoxic waters mixed with warm aerated surface waters, forming regional dysoxia, so that extreme carbonate supersaturation and dysoxic conditions were both required for their growth. Long-term oceanic and atmospheric changes may have contributed to a trigger for ETM formation. In equatorial western Pangea, the earliest microbialites are late Early Triassic, but it is possible that ETMs could exist in western Pangea, if well-preserved earliest Triassic facies are discovered in future work

    Intercomparison of the northern hemisphere winter mid-latitude atmospheric variability of the IPCC models

    We compare, for the overlapping time frame 1962-2000, the estimate of the northern hemisphere (NH) mid-latitude winter atmospheric variability within the XX century simulations of 17 global climate models (GCMs) included in the IPCC-4AR with the NCEP and ECMWF reanalyses. We compute the Hayashi spectra of the 500hPa geopotential height fields and introduce an integral measure of the variability observed in the NH on different spectral sub-domains. Only two high-resolution GCMs have a good agreement with reanalyses. Large biases, in most cases larger than 20%, are found between the wave climatologies of most GCMs and the reanalyses, with a relative span of around 50%. The travelling baroclinic waves are usually overestimated, while the planetary waves are usually underestimated, in agreement with previous studies performed on global weather forecasting models. When comparing the results of various versions of similar GCMs, it is clear that in some cases the vertical resolution of the atmosphere and, somewhat unexpectedly, of the adopted ocean model seem to be critical in determining the agreement with the reanalyses. The GCMs ensemble is biased with respect to the reanalyses but is comparable to the best 5 GCMs. This study suggests serious caveats with respect to the ability of most of the presently available GCMs in representing the statistics of the global scale atmospheric dynamics of the present climate and, a fortiori, in the perspective of modelling climate change.Comment: 39 pages, 8 figures, 2 table

    The mind's eye, looking inward? In search of executive control in internal attention shifting

    In studies of mental counting, participants are faster to increment a count that was just incremented (no-switch trial) than to increment a different count (switch trial). Investigators have attributed the effect to a shift in the internal focus of attention on switch trials. Here we report evidence for other bottom-up and top-down contributions. Two stimuli were mapped to each of two counts. The no-switch facilitation was greater when stimuli repeated than when they were different. Event-related potential (ERP) activity associated with repetitions was anterior to that associated with switching. Runs of no-switch trials elicited faster responses and frontal ERP activity. Runs of switches and large counts both elicited slow responses and reduced P300 amplitudes. Bottom-up processes may include priming on no-switch trials and conflict on switch trials.     Higher media multi-tasking activity is associated with smaller gray-matter density in the anterior cingulate cortex

    Media multitasking, or the concurrent consumption of multiple media forms, is increasingly prevalent in today’s society and has been associated with negative psychosocial and cognitive impacts. Individuals who engage in heavier media-multitasking are found to perform worse on cognitive control tasks and exhibit more socio-emotional difficulties. However, the neural processes associated with media multi-tasking remain unexplored. The present study investigated relationships between media multitasking activity and brain structure. Research has demonstrated that brain structure can be altered upon prolonged exposure to novel environments and experience. Thus, we expected differential engagements in media multitasking to correlate with brain structure variability. This was confirmed via Voxel-Based Morphometry (VBM) analyses: Individuals with higher Media Multitasking Index (MMI) scores had smaller gray matter density in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Functional connectivity between this ACC region and the precuneus was negatively associated with MMI. Our findings suggest a possible structural correlate for the observed decreased cognitive control performance and socio-emotional regulation in heavy media-multitaskers. While the cross-sectional nature of our study does not allow us to specify the direction of causality, our results brought to light novel associations between individual media multitasking behaviors and ACC structure differences
