    Orbital selective Fermi surface shifts and mechanism of high Tc_c superconductivity in correlated AFeAs (A=Li,Na)

    Based on the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we have investigated the mechanism of high TcT_c superconductivity in stoichiometric LiFeAs. The calculated spectrum is in excellent agreement with the observed ARPES measurement. The Fermi surface (FS) nesting, which is predicted in the conventional density functional theory method, is suppressed due to the orbital-dependent correlation effect with the DMFT method. We have shown that such marginal breakdown of the FS nesting is an essential condition to the spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity, while the good FS nesting in NaFeAs induces a spin density wave ground state. Our results indicate that fully charge self-consistent description of the correlation effect is crucial in the description of the FS nesting-driven instabilities.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, supporting informatio

    Coherent ultra-violet to near-infrared generation in silica ridge waveguides

    Short duration, intense pulses of light can experience dramatic spectral broadening when propagating through lengths of optical fibre. This continuum generation process is caused by a combination of nonlinear optical effects including the formation of dispersive waves. Optical analogues of Cherenkov radiation, these waves allow a pulse to radiate power into a distant spectral region. In this work, efficient and coherent dispersive wave generation of visible to ultraviolet light is demonstrated in silica waveguides on a silicon chip. Unlike fibre broadeners, the arrays provide a wide range of emission wavelength choices on a single, compact chip. This new capability is used to simplify offset frequency measurements of a mode-locked frequency comb. The arrays can also enable mode-locked lasers to attain unprecedented tunable spectral reach for spectroscopy, bioimaging, tomography and metrology

    Fast and Accurate Power Estimation of FPGA DSP Components Based on High-level Switching Activity Models

    When designing DSP circuits, it is important to predict their power consumption early in the design flow in order to reduce the repetition of time consuming design phases. High-level modelling is required for fast power estimation when a design is modified at the algorithm level. This paper presents a novel high-level analytical approach to estimate logic power consumption of arithmetic components implemented in FPGAs. In particular, models of adders and multipliers are presented in detail. The proposed methodology considers input signal correlation and glitching produced inside the component. It is based on an analytical computation of the switching activity in the component which takes into account the component architecture. The complete model can estimate the power consumption for any given clock frequency, signal statistics and operands’ word-lengths. Compared to other proposed power estimation methods, the number of circuit simulations needed for characterizing the power model of the component is highly reduced. The accuracy of the model is within 10% of low-level power estimates given by the tool XPower, and it achieves better overall performance

    Habitual coffee consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, depression and Alzheimer’s disease: a Mendelian randomization study

    Observationally, coffee is inversely associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), depression and Alzheimer’s disease, but not ischemic heart disease (IHD). Coffee features as possibly protective in the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Short-term trials suggest coffee has neutral effect on most glycemic traits, but raises lipids and adiponectin. To clarify we compared T2DM, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and IHD and its risk factors by genetically predicted coffee consumption using two-sample Mendelian randomization applied to large extensively genotyped case-control and cross-sectional studies. Childhood cognition was used as a negative control outcome. Genetically predicted coffee consumption was not associated with T2DM (odds ratio (OR) 1.02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.76 to 1.36), depression (0.89, 95% CI 0.66 to 1.21), Alzheimer’s disease (1.17, 95% CI 0.96 to 1.43), IHD (0.96, 95% CI 0.80 to 1.14), lipids, glycemic traits, adiposity or adiponectin. Coffee was unrelated to childhood cognition. Consistent with observational studies, coffee was unrelated to IHD, and, as expected, childhood cognition. However, contrary to observational findings, coffee may not have beneficial effects on T2DM, depression or Alzheimer’s disease. These findings clarify the role of coffee with relevance to dietary guidelines and suggest interventions to prevent these complex chronic diseases should be sought elsewhere

    In Vitro Macrophage Assay Predicts the In Vivo Anti-inflammatory Potential of Exosomes from Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

    Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play key roles in cell biology and may provide new clinical diagnostics and therapies. However, it has proven difficult to develop protocols for their purification and characterization. One of the major barriers in the field has been a lack of convenient assays for their bioactivity. Developing assays has not been a trivial matter, because of the heterogeneity of EVs, the multiple activities they demonstrate, and the uncertainty about their modes of action. Therefore, it is likely that multiple assays for their activities are needed. One important assay will be for the anti-inflammatory activity observed in mice after administration of the small EVs commonly referred to as exosomes. We developed an assay for the anti-inflammatory activity of exosomes with a line of mouse macrophages. The assay makes it possible to rank different preparations of exosomes by their anti-inflammatory activity, and their ranking predicts their efficacy in suppressing LPS-stimulated inflammation in mice. The assay is convenient for comparing multiple samples and, therefore, should be useful in developing protocols for the purification and characterization of anti-inflammatory exosomes.Fil: Pacienza, Natalia Alejandra.     Glioblastoma induces whole-brain spectral change in resting state fMRI: Associations with clinical comorbidities and overall survival

    Glioblastoma, a highly aggressive form of brain tumor, is a brain-wide disease. We evaluated the impact of tumor burden on whole brain resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) activity. Specifically, we analyzed rs-fMRI signals in the temporal frequency domain in terms of the power-law exponent and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF). We contrasted 189 patients with newly-diagnosed glioblastoma versus 189 age-matched healthy reference participants from an external dataset. The patient and reference datasets were matched for age and head motion. The principal finding was markedly flatter spectra and reduced grey matter fALFF in the patients as compared to the reference dataset. We posit that the whole-brain spectral change is attributable to global dysregulation of excitatory and inhibitory balance and metabolic demand in the tumor-bearing brain. Additionally, we observed that clinical comorbidities, in particular, seizures, and MGMT promoter methylation, were associated with flatter spectra. Notably, the degree of change in spectra was predictive of overall survival. Our findings suggest that frequency domain analysis of rs-fMRI activity provides prognostic information in glioblastoma patients and offers a means of noninvasively studying the effects of glioblastoma on the whole brain

    Chemotherapeutic drug-specific alteration of microvascular blood flow in murine breast cancer as measured by diffuse correlation spectroscopy

    The non-invasive, in vivo measurement of microvascular blood flow has the potential to enhance breast cancer therapy monitoring. Here, longitudinal blood flow of 4T1 murine breast cancer (N=125) under chemotherapy was quantified with diffuse correlation spectroscopy based on layer models. Six different treatment regimens involving doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, and paclitaxel at clinically relevant doses were investigated. Treatments with cyclophosphamide increased blood flow as early as 3 days after administration, whereas paclitaxel induced a transient blood flow decrease at 1 day after administration.     Structural gray matter alterations in glioblastoma and high-grade glioma- A potential biomarker of survival

    BACKGROUND: Patients with glioblastoma (GBM) and high-grade glioma (HGG, World Health Organization [WHO] grade IV glioma) have a poor prognosis. Consequently, there is an unmet clinical need for accessible and noninvasively acquired predictive biomarkers of overall survival in patients. This study evaluated morphological changes in the brain separated from the tumor invasion site (ie, contralateral hemisphere). Specifically, we examined the prognostic value of widespread alterations of cortical thickness (CT) in GBM/HGG patients. METHODS: We used FreeSurfer, applied with high-resolution T1-weighted MRI, to examine CT, evaluated prior to standard treatment with surgery and chemoradiation in patients (GBM/HGG, RESULTS: Compared to HC cases, patients had thinner gray matter in the contralesional hemisphere at the time of tumor diagnosis. patients had significant cortical thinning in parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. Fourteen cortical parcels showed reduced CT, whereas in 5, it was thicker in patients\u27 cases. Notably, CT in the contralesional hemisphere, various lobes, and parcels was predictive of overall survival. A machine learning classification algorithm showed that CT could differentiate short- and long-term survival patients with an accuracy of 83.3%. CONCLUSIONS: These findings identify previously unnoticed structural changes in the cortex located in the hemisphere contralateral to the primary tumor mass. Observed changes in CT may have prognostic value, which could influence care and treatment planning for individual patients

    The Role of Dairy Products and Milk in Adolescent Obesity: Evidence from Hong Kong’s ‘‘Children of 1997’’ Birth Cohort

    Background Observational studies, mainly from Western populations, suggest dairy consumption is inversely associated with adiposity. However, in these populations the intake range is limited and both diet and obesity may share social patterning. Evidence from non-Western developed settings with different social patterning, is valuable in distinguishing whether observed associations are biologically mediated or socially confounded. Objective To examine the associations of milk or other dairy product consumption with adolescent obesity. Methods We used multivariable linear regression models to examine the associations of milk or other dairy product consumption, obtained from a food frequency questionnaire, at 11 years with body mass index (BMI) z-scores at 13 years and waist hip ratio (WHR) at 11 years, in 5,968 adolescents from a Chinese birth cohort, comprising 88% of births in April and May 1997. We used multiple imputation for missing exposures and confounders. Results Only 65.7% regularly consumed milk and 72.4% other dairy products. Milk and other dairy product consumption was positively associated with socio-economic position but not with BMI z-score or WHR, with or without adjustment for sex, mother’s birthplace, parental education, physical activity and other food consumption. Conclusions The lack of association of milk and other dairy product consumption with adiposity in a non-Western setting was not consistent with the majority of evidence from Western settings.
