    Fast single frame super-resolution using scale-invariant self-similarity

    Example-based super-resolution (SR) attracts great interest due to its wide range of applications. However, these algorithms usually involve patch search in a large database or the input image, which is computationally intensive. In this paper, we propose a scale-invariant self-similarity (SiSS) based super-resolution method. Instead of searching patches, we select the patch according to the SiSS measurement, so that the computational complexity is significantly reduced. Multi-shaped and multi-sized patches are used to collect sufficient patches for high-resolution (HR) image reconstruction and a hybrid weighting method is used to suppress the artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is 201,800 times faster than several state-of-the-art approaches and can achieve comparable quality.published_or_final_versio

    Seismicity of Jordan and Conterminous Countries

    An up-to-date seismic hazard maps for Jordan and conterminous areas have been developed based on probabilistic approach. Such maps are intended to show the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) with 90% probability of not being exceeded in a life time of 50, 100, and 200 years, respectively. The computer program FRISK was used for estimating the PGA. A suitable attenuation equation reported in the literature, along with up-to-date earthquake catalogue including all the earthquake events that occurred in Jordan and neighboring countries, were considered in this study. Altogether, ten seismic zones as potential of earthquake activities are identified in the assessment of the seismic hazard maps. These are Aqaba Gulf fault, Wadi Araba fault, Dead Sea fault, Northern fault, SE-Mediterranean fault, Farah and Carmel faults, Wadi Sirhan fault, Karak-Fayha fault, Suez Gulf fault, and Cyprus zone fault

    Suppression of type I and type III interferon signalling by NSs protein of severe fever-with-thrombocytopenia syndrome virus through inhibition of STAT1 phosphorylation and activation

    Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is an emerging tick-borne pathogen causing significant morbidity and mortality in Asia. NSs protein of SFTSV is known to perturb type I IFN induction and signalling, but the mechanism remains to be fully understood. Here, we showed the suppression of both type I and type III IFN signalling by SFTSV NSs protein is mediated through inhibition of STAT1 phosphorylation and activation. Infection with live SFTSV or expression of NSs potently suppressed IFN-stimulated genes but not NFκB activation. NSs was capable of counteracting the activity of IFN-α1, IFN-β, IFN-λ1 and IFN-λ2. Mechanistically, NSs associated with STAT1 and STAT2, mitigated IFN-β-induced phosphorylation of STAT1 at S727, and reduced the expression and activity of STAT1 protein in IFN-β-treated cells, resulting in the inhibition of STAT1 and STAT2 recruitment to IFN-stimulated promoters.     Characterization of Shewanella oneidensis MtrC: a cell-surface decaheme cytochrome involved in respiratory electron transport to extracellular electron acceptors

    MtrC is a decaheme c-type cytochrome associated with the outer cell membrane of Fe(III)-respiring species of the Shewanella genus. It is proposed to play a role in anaerobic respiration by mediating electron transfer to extracellular mineral oxides that can serve as terminal electron acceptors. The present work presents the first spectropotentiometric and voltammetric characterization of MtrC, using protein purified from Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Potentiometric titrations, monitored by UV–vis absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, reveal that the hemes within MtrC titrate over a broad potential range spanning between approximately +100 and approximately -500 mV (vs. the standard hydrogen electrode). Across this potential window the UV–vis absorption spectra are characteristic of low-spin c-type hemes and the EPR spectra reveal broad, complex features that suggest the presence of magnetically spin-coupled low-spin c-hemes. Non-catalytic protein film voltammetry of MtrC demonstrates reversible electrochemistry over a potential window similar to that disclosed spectroscopically. The voltammetry also allows definition of kinetic properties of MtrC in direct electron exchange with a solid electrode surface and during reduction of a model Fe(III) substrate.
