    In two recent publications [Commun. PDE, vol.22, p.307--335 (1997), Commun. Math. Phys., vol.203, p.1--19 (1999)], A. Komech, M. Kunze and H. Spohn studied the joint dynamics of a classical point particle and a wave type generalization of the Newtonian gravity potential, coupled in a regularized way. In the present paper the many-body dynamics of this model is studied. The Vlasov continuum limit is obtained in form equivalent to a weak law of large numbers. We also establish a central limit theorem for the fluctuations around this limit.Comment: 68 pages.     Global existence for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system with outgoing matter

    We prove a new global existence result for the asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system which describes in the framework of general relativity an ensemble of particles which interact by gravity. The data are such that initially all the particles are moving radially outward and that this property can be bootstrapped. The resulting non-vacuum spacetime is future geodesically complete.Comment: 16 page

    We present a new family of stationary solutions to the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a Jacobian elliptic function potential. In the limit of a sinusoidal potential our solutions model a dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a standing light wave. Provided the ratio of the height of the variations of the condensate to its DC offset is small enough, both trivial phase and nontrivial phase solutions are shown to be stable. Numerical simulations suggest such stationary states are experimentally observable.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Cosmology with positive and negative exponential potentials

    We present a phase-plane analysis of cosmologies containing a scalar field ϕ\phi with an exponential potential Vexp(λκϕ)V \propto \exp(-\lambda \kappa \phi) where κ2=8πG\kappa^2 = 8\pi G and VV may be positive or negative. We show that power-law kinetic-potential scaling solutions only exist for sufficiently flat (λ26\lambda^26) negative potentials. The latter correspond to a class of ever-expanding cosmologies with negative potential. However we show that these expanding solutions with a negative potential are to unstable in the presence of ordinary matter, spatial curvature or anisotropic shear, and generic solutions always recollapse to a singularity. Power-law kinetic-potential scaling solutions are the late-time attractor in a collapsing universe for steep negative potentials (the ekpyrotic scenario) and stable against matter, curvature or shear perturbations. Otherwise kinetic-dominated solutions are the attractor during collapse (the pre big bang scenario) and are only marginally stable with respect to anisotropic shear.Comment: 8 pages, latex with revtex, 9 figure

    Effects of Dietary Antioxidant Supplementation on Cattle Finished with 30% Wet Distillers Grains Plus Solubles on Fatty Acid Profiles and Display Life

    Steers were finished on either 0% wet distillers grains plus solubles or 30% wet distillers grains plus solubles with four antioxidant treatments to evaluate the effects of finishing diets containing wet distillers grains plus solubles, vitamin E and Agrado Plus on beef fatty acid profiles, discoloration and lipid oxidation of retail- displayed beef. Th e inclusion of 30% wet distillers grains plus solubles increased total polyunsaturated fatty acids of beef, but did not promote discoloration or lipid oxidation compared to the 0% wet distillers grains plus solubles diet. In both diets, feeding vitamin E alone or vitamin E+ Agrado Plus was effective in reducing lipid oxidation and maintaining color stability, while supplementing Agrado Plus alone had minimal effects in improving lipid and color stability

    Formation of a stable deacagonal quasicrystalline Al-Pd-Mn surface layer

    We report the in situ formation of an ordered equilibrium decagonal Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystal overlayer on the 5-fold symmetric surface of an icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn monograin. The decagonal structure of the epilayer is evidenced by x-ray photoelectron diffraction, low-energy electron diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. This overlayer is also characterized by a reduced density of states near the Fermi edge as expected for quasicrystals. This is the first time that a millimeter-size surface of the stable decagonal Al-Pd-Mn is obtained, studied and compared to its icosahedral counterpart.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Ref. Lett.     The Influence of Diet and Oxidation on Calcium Retention of the Mitochondria in Fresh Beef

    Feeding dried distillers grains (DG) may influence calcium flux postmortem by disrupting the stability of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) membrane, thus leading to a higher post- rigor calcium leakage, resulting in greater activation of calpains and improved tenderness. Mitochondria provide the opportunity to study calcium flux in a controlled, tightly defined environment as a model system for the SR. Cattle were finished on diets containing either 0% DG or 50% DG. Feeding DG increased proportions of PUFA in the SR and mitochondrial membrane. Oxidized mitochondria retained less calcium than non- oxidized mitochondria. Mitochondria from cattle finished on corn tended to retain more Ca than mitochondria from cattle finished on DG. These findings suggest that feeding DG in the finishing diet can possibly increase meat tenderness through altered calcium flux
